Xiaomi abandoned large smartphones in the upper price segment, returning to a diagonal of 5.15 inches. And just like the Mi5 generation without an index, the fresh Mi6 received two versions: in a glass or ceramic case.

The ceramic version is the flagship one, therefore it is equipped with a more powerful filling. Presented only in black. More mass glass version is sold in three colors: black, white and blue with gold edging.

The screen of the smartphone has a very high brightness and contrast, rich color reproduction and feels great both in the dark and under the bright sun. Almost AMOLED, but without the problems inherent in organic LEDs.

In addition, the screen has undergone major improvements on the software side. The smartphone has received improved algorithms to save vision. Now the minimum brightness of the display is equal to one candle - the most pleasant and correct value for using the device in complete darkness.

Also in Mi6 there is an improved reading mode, familiar to us from other smartphones of the company. However, the flagship practically does not change the color of the display, while the simpler Xiaomi devices simply turn on the yellow backlight.

Hardware platform and performance

Xiaomi Mi6 was one of the first smartphones on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 single-chip platform. It is worth emphasizing that it was serial, since almost every brand announced the release of such a device, but only Samsung and Xiaomi offered them to the mass consumer.

In such a comparison, Mi6 acquires a special charm. The new processor copes with any load now and will do it for several more years: the performance margin is simply enormous. Benchmarks also provide relevant data, recording the novelty in the category of the most powerful smartphones.

In addition, the new processor reduces heat dissipation. The device even with a serious load does not heat up above 45 degrees.

Operating system and software

Like other smartphones of the company, Xiaomi Mi6 is running . The first copies of the device were supplied with the Chinese firmware of the eighth version. At the moment, an international (global) version of the add-on is also available, based on the latest version of Android 7.1.1.

The system has advanced options for customizing the shell, functionality of the smartphone and connected peripherals, appearance and reaction to various events.

Contrary to expectations, a well-optimized software shell and a modern processor allow Mi6 to achieve excellent autonomy. On it you can watch a movie for up to 8 hours at maximum screen brightness with wireless interfaces turned off. Reducing the backlight level to 25% increases the operating time to 14 hours.

In mixed mode, the smartphone lasts at least a day. The net operating time of the display at maximum brightness is at least 5 hours. And this is with the synchronization of 10-15 applications in the background, constant correspondence, calls, watching videos and using the device as a navigator.

The new chipset allowed the company's engineers to implement another important feature - fast charging of the promising Quick Charge 4.0 standard. With its help, Xiaomi Mi6 charges from 0 to 100% in just 1 hour and 30 minutes. In order for the battery to last as long as possible, the charging algorithm works non-linearly: 50% of the smartphone is charged in just half an hour, 80% in an hour.

Usually Chinese smartphones cannot boast of the quality of shooting. But here is another matter. The main camera is one of the main advantages of Xiaomi Mi6.

As befits a modern fashionable flagship, Mi6 received a dual main camera. Each module hides Sony's flagship 12MP IMX298 used in the company's previous generation of smartphones. But, as we know, the operation of the camera does not always depend on the hardware configuration. This was the case with the Mi5, whose photo capabilities were never disclosed by the developers. Apparently, they were in a hurry to master the module for Mi6, because everything is in order with it.

The latest flagship is equipped with 4-axis camera stabilization, and it really works very well. Also worth noting is the improved image sharpness.

For an ordinary user who does not meticulously look at each frame, these properties will manifest themselves primarily when shooting at night and in cloudy weather. These complex scenarios succeed Xiaomi Mi6 better than any of the Chinese smartphones.

A fly in the ointment was added by the decision of engineers to follow the example of Lenovo and Apple and abandon the traditional headset jack. The role of a mini-jack is played by a universal data connector. Luckily, the Mi6's USB Type-C runs on an advanced USB 3.1 chip, so it's possible to charge the device and listen to music in a wired headset at the same time.

The package includes an adapter for regular headphones. But Xiaomi took care of the buyers, providing something better. You can already purchase an updated version of the Xiaomi Hybrid Headset with USB Type-C instead of the 3.5mm jack.

Wireless interfaces

In accordance with the flagship status, Xiaomi Mi6 received support for all modern communication standards. The latest Bluetooth 5.0 LE with low power consumption and extended range is used to connect to peripheral equipment. There is NFC - you can use Android Pay and Troika. The Wi-Fi module works in all common ranges and has a good range, easily communicating with the router through 3-4 reinforced concrete walls.

With the release of the Mi5, which for the first time in the history of the brand had its own face, then the slightly clumsy Mi5s, and in particular, it could seem that Xiaomi really set a course for autonomy and no longer looks towards Cupertino. But then Mi6 came out, and at a difficult time for the company - in the period of transition from online to offline sales, when the company's market share is declining. His role turns out to be quite difficult - if not the rescue of drowning people, then something like that. For this (feasible?) mission, they decided to disguise the agent of Chinese influence again. The two cameras this time offer 2x optical zoom due to the different focal lengths of the two lenses (unlike the Mi5s Plus, which used the “RGB + monochrome sensor” scheme), the Home button has become touch-sensitive, the 3.5mm jack has disappeared, instead splash protection appeared, and the black version sparkles with gloss (hello, Jet Black).

And all this against the backdrop of reports of problems with the number of patents in Xiaomi's portfolio. However, such trifles never interfered with fans of the brand - in the end, all this is accompanied by a price starting at 21 thousand rubles (when buying a device in China) and hardware stuffing, for which you are not ashamed even when compared with other Android flagships like , or . For a few days I got exactly the glass version, doomed to be more popular - few will choose the most expensive Xiaomi for the sake of "premium". The outlines have not changed much compared to the Mi5: a slightly convex 2.5D glass in the front, the same back in the back, in the corner of which there is a camera that has grown a second lens. Thanks to this form, the smartphone seems even thinner than it really is. This is an illusion: Mi6 has become even a little thicker than its predecessor - 7.45 mm versus 7.3. But the fact that because of this it slips out of the hand more readily, which is facilitated by the slippery glossy case, is already a reality. With Mi6 you have to be very careful - it's a beautiful, but extremely capricious gadget.

Another problem, which also owes its existence to the spectacular design, is that the case is very easily smudged and scratched. And if you expect this with regard to the glass back panel (and reluctantly get ready to buy a case for your smartphone), then the front glass feels devoid of an oleophobic coating - I have lost the habit of this in recent years. This is especially strange given that Xiaomi smartphones used to be famous for their resistance to fingerprints and other dirt.

The display occupies approximately 80 percent of the front panel. Taking into account its relatively small diagonal (5.15 inches) and the thinness of the body, the Mi6 ultimately feels like a very small gadget - in size it resembles the same iPhone without the “Plus” additive, except that the latter has an even smaller display.

Xiaomi is very proud of the splash protection on its flagship, for which the engineers sacrificed a 3.5mm headphone jack. But this is not IP67 protection, like on the iPhone 7, and even more so not IP68, like on the Samsung Galaxy S7 / S8 (which also have a mini-jack on board easily meet this standard), - the gadget can not be dipped in water. What exactly are the numbers opposite the IP - Xiaomi does not say, but I suspect there is something like IP54 or 55.
