Samsung galaxy note 8.0 what line

The new tablet of the South Korean company Samsung, eight-inch Galaxy Note 8.0 can be characterized, at least, as a very curious device.

This device is a classic tablet in size, while its design is very similar to the design of the latest Samsung smartphones. Being a kind of hybrid between the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy Note 10.1, the eight-inch "freak" causes quite conflicting feelings. And it seems that this is exactly what its manufacturer relied on when deciding how the next representative of the family of devices equipped with an active S-Pen would look like.

So, today we have a WiFi version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet, which can be bought in the United States at a price of $ 400 and before moving on to a detailed description of the novelty, let's get acquainted with its main technical characteristics.

Well, you have already received the general picture of the tablet, and before continuing, let's dwell on the main advantages and disadvantages of this device

Advantages

Form factor: An 8-inch tablet (thanks to Apple) is the sweet spot between the portability of a smartphone and the functionality of a tablet, the screen of which is ideal for watching movies, playing games and surfing the Internet.

S Pen: Those who choose the Note for its active digitizer screen and digital pen software suite will love the new S-Pen, which is slightly larger than the Note II and more solid than the Note 10.1. Also, this is the first Samsung pen to work with touch buttons.

Performance A: The combination of a quad-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM and a Mali-400 graphics accelerator makes the Note 8.0 a very fast device. It won't be the most powerful tablet of 2013, but with specifications comparable to the international version of the Galaxy S III, you'll be able to handle a variety of tasks with dignity.

Software: Finally, Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz interface has become not only a useful addition to Android, but also does not slow down its work.

disadvantages

Build quality: The design of the new Samsung tablet is borrowed from the company's smartphones. The case does not look very durable and bends in places when pressed. This is not to say that this is bad, but at first it causes a slight feeling of embarrassment.

Design: The design of the tablet should either get used to or come to terms with the fact that it looks like a very fat phone.

Price: For $400 in the US, you can buy two Nexus 7 tablets, or even similar-sized Amazon and Barnes & Noble tablets.

Camera and Speakers: Looking at the pathetic 5-megapixel main camera of the tablet, without an LED flash, you think that it would be better if it didn’t exist at all. In addition, Samsung's decision to ditch the front-facing speakers that have appeared in the latest ten-inch tablets is also puzzling.

Android OS version: While there's been a more recent version of Android Jelly Bean 4.2 for some time now, which has some pretty interesting and handy features, Samsung's new tablet runs Android 4.1.2 out of the box.

Design and build quality

Looking at the new Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet, one gets the impression that its designer, unable to endure the pangs of creativity, in their hearts threw a rather successful Note II layout out the window, where it was run over by an asphalt rink passing by.

Everything from color, design elements, layout and design of controls is borrowed from a smartphone. And perhaps the only thing that distinguishes these two devices is the lack of a speaker grill on the tablet next to the front camera.

On the front, you'll find two touch-sensitive navigation buttons and a mechanical home button, exactly the same as we're used to seeing on almost all Android smartphones. But this solution, which works very well on phones, turned out to be quite inconvenient on a tablet, especially when you use it in landscape mode.

The body of the tablet is made of white plastic, with a silver insert at the ends. On the right side (if you hold the tablet in your hands like a phone) you will find the power button, volume rocker and infrared port. On the left side there is a slot for microSD memory cards, hidden behind a plastic flap. The top edge adorns the headphone jack, and on the bottom we find two tiny openings that house the stereo speaker grilles and the MicroUSB port (Yesss! - Samsung finally heard our pleas).

The S-Pen slot is located in the lower right corner of the case.

As already mentioned, the design of the pen has changed. It is larger than the Note and Note II pen and is comparable in size to the Note 10.1 pen. But it will be more convenient to hold it, especially for those who have large fingers, than a pen from a ten-inch tablet. The control button is located quite conveniently, within reach of the index finger. In addition, this is the first S-Pen that works with touch buttons - a rather useful and convenient option.

On the opposite side of the screen, you will find a 1.3-megapixel camera lens and a proximity sensor that stand out against a white background, which look very unusual, given the absence of a conversational speaker.

On the back of the tablet, you'll find a 5-megapixel camera lens rising slightly above the snowy white landscape. The Galaxy Note 8.0 has no LED flash.

The build quality is at a fairly high level, which is traditional for Samsung. Those who were disappointed by the flimsy-looking body of the Note 10.1 will be pleased to hear that the Note 8.0 feels noticeably more secure in the hands.

Surprisingly, this tablet is quite comfortable to hold in your hands and all elements fit very precisely, but in general it does not look as solid as the Nexus 7 tablet, and even more so, in this respect it is not comparable to its main competitor - the Apple iPad mini.

Screen

Currently, there are quite a few fans of devices with an eight-inch screen, but this is rather because everyone is already used to the fact that a compact tablet should have a screen that measures 7 inches diagonally. Although, after a short communication with such devices, you understand that they not only have the right to life, but are often more convenient than tablets with a 10-inch screen, or their smaller seven-inch counterparts.

Some will be disappointed by the screen resolution of the tablet, which is 1280 x 800 pixels, which looks quite modest compared to the screens of the Samsung Nexus 10, Galaxy S4 and other modern tablets.

Of course, I wish the $400 tablet had a higher resolution screen, but don't forget that it comes with a Wacom active digitizer to support digital pen operation.

In general, the Galaxy Note 8.0 screen, if not excellent, is very good - there are large viewing angles and excellent color reproduction and a high level of brightness. Even the screen cover goes well with the stylus tip, which glides across the screen without encountering the slightest resistance.

Performance

Thanks to a fairly powerful Exynos 4410 processor running at 1.6 GHz and equipped with an excellent Mali 400 graphics accelerator, as well as the presence of 2 GB of RAM, the tablet looks just fine in operation. The proprietary Samsung TouchWiz UI interface works smoothly and without any delays. All applications, including branded programs for working with a digital pen, which, judging by their functionality, should significantly load the processor, work great.

In performance tests, the Galaxy Note 8.0 shows pretty good results, which, compared to other popular tablets, look like this:

Battery life

The battery life of the Galaxy Note Note 8.0 tablet is roughly comparable to that of the Nexus 7, at just under two days of heavy use, or about 7-8 hours of continuous video playback.

Here are the results for the Note 8.0 and other tablets in the continuous video playback test:

Samsung Galaxy Tab

The tablet's battery capacity is 4600 mAh, which is slightly more than the Nexus 7 and almost twice as much as the manufacturer's flagship smartphones.

It is worth noting that Samsung has finally equipped its mobile device with a standard MicroUSB port, and now you can charge it not only using a branded network adapter, but also use any adapter with a USB connector. Unfortunately, for some reason, the tablet's battery does not charge from the USB port of the computer.

Sound and speakers

Tablets by their main purpose are multimedia devices, so the sound quality of their speakers plays a fairly high role when choosing.

Recent Samsung tablets such as the Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and even the Nexus 10 have front-facing speakers, which is a very good solution in terms of sound quality.

The Note 8's tiny speakers are located on the bottom of the tablet (when you're holding it like a phone), and you'll obscure them with your hand if you rotate the tablet to landscape mode, which is where you'll play games and watch videos. Therefore, if you are an avid gamer or a fan of watching TV shows on your tablet, you will have to get used to using headphones, which, unfortunately, are not included with the tablet.

The tablet speakers themselves sound quite loud, without any distortion. Naturally, relying on deep bass from tiny speakers would be ridiculous, but for a mobile device, the sound of the Galaxy Note 8.0 is at an acceptable level.

Camera

Personally, I think that using a tablet as a camera or camcorder is very inconvenient and looks somewhat comical from the outside. And a tablet with a five-megapixel camera without an LED flash is not suitable for the role of a portable camera, and even more so.

Not only does the Galaxy Note 8.0's camera have a fairly low resolution, but it also doesn't do a good enough job in low ambient light levels.

No, you can scan a barcode or a business card with it without problems, but you should not count on high-quality portraits and landscapes made by this tablet.

The resolution of the 1.3-megapixel front camera is enough to chat online using Skype or other online services, but that's what it is designed for.

Memory

In our hands turned out to be a tablet equipped with 16 GB of internal memory, part of which is occupied by the Android 4.1 operating system and system applications, including an extensive set of proprietary Samsung programs. The user has a little less than 10 GB of free space, which he can use to store data and install programs. In times of HD videos and games that take up to several gigabytes of internal memory, the amount of internal memory of the Galaxy Note 8.0 cannot be called gigantic.

The presence of a slot for microSD memory cards partially solves the problem with the lack of internal memory, but do not forget that in Android version 4.1 and higher, there is no way to move applications to a memory card.

Software

All Samsung Android devices come with Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz UI, which is quite nice and convenient for those who are used to it, but which may seem a little cumbersome for those who first come across it, especially after dealing with the "naked" operating system on devices such as tablets and smartphones of the Google Nexus family. But in any case, you quickly get used to this interface, and in the future, when you change the device, you will even miss it.

The Galaxy Note 8.0 comes with more than two dozen pre-installed apps, including Samsung's signature S-Pen apps, plus useful apps like Polaris Office, Dropbox, and Flipboard.

Opportunities provided by proprietary software paired with a digital pen is a topic for a separate full-fledged review, but I would like to note such great things as creating handwritten notes, entering formulas and sketches using a digital pen, which are automatically converted to a classic look , multi-window application launcher, and more, which makes Samsung devices belonging to the Galaxy Note family so popular, even despite their rather high prices.

Conclusion

Despite the rather controversial design, the screen, the resolution of which does not match the price of the tablet, and other minor flaws, the Galaxy Note 8 is a fairly high-quality and functional device, the owners of which are unlikely to regret the money spent on its purchase.

However, if you are on a tight budget, do not forget that for the price of Galaxy Note 8 you can buy two Nexus 7 and even traditionally more expensive than other tablets, the Apple iPad tablet with a screen of the same size (but lower resolution) is much cheaper (at $70) than the new Samsung tablet.

So if you don't need the features that the Galaxy Note 8 has to offer: having an active digital pen and the corresponding set of software, I would recommend that you look either at other compact tablets or wait for the second generation of the Google Nexus 7 or iPad mini with an HD screen. .

One of the new products of the spring of 2013 from Samsung, which deserves attention, was the Galaxy Note 8 tablet. Its release is predetermined by the not entirely successful sales of the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the launch of the Apple iPad mini. It would be surprising if the South Korean company did not provide an adequate response, strengthening its position in the tablet market with compact displays.

I present to you the review and testing of the tablet with the code name Samsung GT-N5100.
Samsung did not bother and come up with a new name for the gadget, standing apart from the main mass of tablets. Yes, and similar in philosophy to Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has already established itself well in the market, one cannot fail to note the general external similarity. The Galaxy Note line itself blurs the lines between tablets and smartphones, it is a new segment in the mobile device market that combines the advantages of both. The presence of a slot for a SIM card in the Samsung GT-N5100 is another factor that blurs the boundaries.

Going back a year, I can't help but note my personal opinion on the Galaxy Tab 7.7: this is a very controversial release. The first thing that caught my eye was the unfinished filling and the high cost. Apparently, not only I adhered to this opinion, the model is poorly distributed on the market. A series of patches and updates did not help either. Marketers were clearly in a hurry to release it to the market to the detriment of debugging. By tradition in Samsung Note 8.0 screen with a larger diagonal, this is a general trend in the market. Mistakes have been taken into account, good software is on board, an S Pen, but is this enough for successful competition now?

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100 Availability

This is a novelty on the Russian market, only one offer, according to Yandex.Market. For the Samsung GT-N5100 they ask for 21,000 rubles. ASUS Nexus 7 and Apple iPad Mini are strong competitors. The first one can be bought for 15,000 rubles, but you have to forget about expanding the memory and the camera for filming. The second one is also cheaper than the Note 8.0, but there is also no micro SD slot and the highly controversial iOS platform.

As you can see, buyers now have a choice and it pleases.

Appearance Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100

Samsung Note 8.0 changed the external concept of Galaxy Tab 7.7. Whether it's good or not - s, if earlier it had its own zest that distinguishes it from smartphones, now it's just the Samsung Galaxy S3 that has grown in size. It has become more modest and boring, and the wide frame around it also contributes. This is forgivable for budget tablets, but in the case of Note 8.0 it is at least strange.

The main body material of the tablet is glossy white plastic. Fingerprints do not remain on it. There is a light structured pattern.

On the upper part of the front side there are sensors, a speaker slot and a front camera.

Below are three buttons - one mechanical and two touch.

The touch buttons have a response to the S Pen, while testing the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, we noted the absence of this feature, it was really inconvenient.

In case of Samsung Note 8.0 now you can work without being distracted, only with a pen.

A 3.5 mm headphone jack is placed on the top edge, and on the opposite side there is a micro USB port.

The volume and power rockers are located on the side. He is accompanied by an infrared port (I demonstrated the function of remote control of equipment earlier in the Samsung Galaxy S4).

On the opposite side there are compartments for a memory card and a SIM card.

On the back surface is a single camera lens.

The weight of Samsung Note 8.0 is 340 grams, it is comfortable to hold it in your hand, the feeling that it is not a tablet in your hands, but an overgrown smartphone.

Screen Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100

The PLS-matrix developed by Samsung is used, it is an analogue of the familiar and beloved IPS.

The colors are pleasant, the brightness is moderate, there are no overly embellished colors.

The diagonal is, as the name suggests, 8 inches with a resolution of 1280 x 800. Samsung has a higher pixel density than the iPad Mini.

If you take a good look at the picture on the screen, you can notice pixelation, with the usual arrangement in the hand, this moment disappears. Actually, this is not surprising and pleases, the race of marketers for high resolution has not affected the segment of mini-tablets.

Reading texts on the screen has improved due to the new feature, it allows you to improve the text for some programs.

The screen contrast is 690:1, the brightness is up to 420 cd/m2. Settings allow you to customize the display to your liking. The received data are in comfortable values. The color temperature is close to 6500K, but we can not help but note the presence of a slight deviation in cold tones.

Soft Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100

The Samsung Note 8.0 tablet uses the Google Android 4.1.2 operating system with the proprietary TouchWiz shell. The design is already familiar and was described in detail during the tests of Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

As in the new flagship of the company, the unlocking mechanism has changed, now it is enough to swipe your finger across the screen. You can also do this with the S Pen.

The information content of the lock screen has improved, it displays a widget with a clock, information and frequently used programs.

A new understanding is the dual screen function, thanks to the large screen, it has become more convenient to use than on a smartphone.

Camera Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100

The camera is 5 MP with autofocus without flash. The maximum resolution for photos is 2560 x 1920 pixels, and video in HD1280 x 720. The camera feels a little better than the convertible tablet Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro for 50,000 rubles, but does not reach the level of the Galaxy S4.

On the tablet, if there is a main camera, I would like to see more expressive pictures. The only thing that pleased me was the presence of basic controls for important parameters on the main window (brightness, exposure ...).

Testing Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100

It's time to see what the Samsung Note 8.0 can showcase.

Antutu Benchmark

Not bad at all, made possible by a Samsung Exynos 4412 1600 MHz processor paired with Mali-400 MP graphics. Available 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage expandable with micro SD cards.

The tablet also coped with the complex test perfectly.

Battery
According to the test results, Samsung Note 8.0 demonstrated the following battery life on average: games - 3.5 hours, movies - 6 hours, navigation - 4.5 hours, average work - 28 hours.

A 4600 mAh battery is used, and the possibility of reducing power consumption is also provided.

Video

Photo

Games
The Samsung Note 8.0 tablet was tested on modern games, including GTA 3. Brakes and freezes were not noticed. Thanks to the large screen, playing is more comfortable than on smartphones.

IR port

The pre-installed software allows you to add your home appliances that support remote control in a couple of clicks. After that, the need for a mass of remote controls disappears, all devices can be controlled from the tablet.

Watching films
There are no problems in playing high-resolution video files, there is extensive support for DivX and XviD codecs. The tablet can be used as a portable media player.

There is a function to control the movement of the eyes (in reality behind the head), if you look to the side, the playback stops. A very dubious pleasure, if desired, it can be turned off without problems.

Sound
The sound quality has improved compared to previous models. The sound is rich, of course, taking into account the features of the form factor.

Results for Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100

Samsung Note 8.0 good, nothing to complain about, but I didn’t have a “WoW effect”. Everything is somehow fresh and ordinary. But at the same time, I cannot say that I did not like the device, it is a balanced tablet. It is comfortable to hold in your hands, there is no fatigue and discomfort.

The company took into account all the errors of the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and released the finished product to the market, no problems with software and stuffing were found. An undoubted advantage is 3G support, by the way, there is software for making calls. But even without this, the presence of mobile Internet will allow you to use it on the road in the form of a tablet or a working tool.

The only thing that repels is the cost, if it would be reduced by 5 thousand. Then the Apple iPad mini and competitors in the Google Android market would have to worry a lot. Although in the case of the iPad mini, for me personally, the main repulsive factor is fettering iOS users, Note 8.0 will be much more interesting.

The device turned out to be light (340 g) and thin, its thickness is only 7.95 mm. The tablet is comfortable to hold with one or two hands in both landscape and portrait orientation due to the wide frames around the screen. The case is monolithic, the assembly is good, however, when squeezed, small creaks are heard.

Screen

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has an 8-inch PLS display. The resolution of the display, though not Full HD, but still decent: 1280 by 800 pixels (189 ppi). At the same time, you can consider individual pixels, but for this you need to look closely at the screen for a long time. From a working distance of 30 cm, they are not noticeable at all - it is comfortable to read. The aspect ratio of the display is 16:10. This decision, which is the golden mean between the "square" iPad mini and the widescreen Nexus 7, is quite justified: there is enough information in any orientation, and there are no wide dark bars when watching a video. In addition, the gadget is deprived of touch keys on the screen itself, which are usually present on most tablets and reduce the effective screen size, so the Note 8.0 has an honest 8 inches. Such a diagonal is ideal for watching movies, playing games, surfing the web or drawing, but if desired, the tablet can easily be put in a jacket pocket, which cannot be done with 10-inch gadgets. Moreover, it is quite light, so the hands do not get tired of holding it for a long time.

We were also pleased with the quality of the screen: the viewing angles are maximum, there are no oversaturated colors typical for Super AMOLED matrices, at the same time the colors are quite juicy and natural, and the picture is clear. Black color goes a little gray, but white is perfect. You can choose from several color display profiles: Dynamic, Standard, or Movie. There is also automatic brightness control, and if the screen still seems too dark or light to you, you can set the shift step in one direction or another, while the display will still adapt to ambient lighting. The maximum brightness value is 420 cd/m², the minimum is 4 cd/m². The display supports up to ten simultaneous touches and is covered with Gorilla Glass 2 with a special oleophobic coating.

Hardware platform

The heart of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is the Exynos 4412 processor, familiar to users of the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy Note 10.1 gadgets. It has four Cortex A9 cores running at 1.6GHz. The device has 2 GB of RAM, which is quite enough for Android for now. The Mali 400MP4 chip is responsible for the graphics. The gadget showed itself perfectly as in work, it does not slow down and does not lag. Also in games - they start quickly, work smoothly and stably. When passing various benchmarks, the device also shows good results both in general performance tests and in separate graphics ones.

It was presented in February of this year at the MWC 2013 exhibition. In my opinion, at the moment, Note 8.0 is the quintessence of all the good things that are in the Galaxy Note line. However, first things first.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 video review

Appearance and design

To be frank, I have an ambivalent attitude to the design of the Galaxy Note 8.0. I don't quite like the way this device looks: I like strict straight lines more than smooth curves. The main body material here is white polycarbonate, which, in terms of tactile sensations, is significantly inferior to aluminum, which is used to make competing products (for example, iPad mini).

Along with this, I can not help but admit that in terms of ergonomics, Note 8.0 worked out amazingly. It lies well in the hand, both in portrait and landscape orientation, which is facilitated by its low weight and its (weight) good distribution. All buttons are located so that the user will not have any dislocation of fingers or calluses from the constant groping for a carefully disguised lock key (which HTC One can boast of). Even the S Pen stylus slot is located in such a way that the stylus is easy to reach with the right hand, if the tablet is held in the left. In essence, this is good design: it is not visible, but at the same time it makes the device as pleasant as possible to use.

Personally, I had no complaints about the build quality of the test copy of the Galaxy Note 8.0.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 uses an 8-inch PLS-matrix with a resolution of 1280x800 (16:10 aspect ratio). This screen has wide viewing angles, and its only major drawback is the narrow color gamut that falls short of the standard sRGB gamut (because of this, the colors look less saturated than they should). At the same time, the uniformity of the gradients and the stability of the color temperature are very good. The measured maximum brightness value is 366 cd/m 2 , the contrast ratio is 480:1.

Software and functionality

In terms of functionality, Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is very similar to Note 10.1, adjusted for the fact that it uses the Android 4.1.2 operating system and not a tablet, but a smartphone version of the TouchWiz shell, for which the portrait screen orientation is the main one. In general, it seems to me that there is not a single person left on earth who has never seen the notorious TouchWiz, so I will not waste extra words, but simply show you screenshots.

Working with the S Pen is again organized in exactly the same way as in the Galaxy Note 10.1. All the features that I loved so much in the Note 10.1 (formula recognition, contour clipping, and handwriting recognition that works perfectly) are present in the Galaxy Note 8.0.

Multi-window (or rather, two-window) mode, which allows you to work with two applications in parallel, began to work much better. If in Note 10.1 switching between two programs located on the screen occurred with delays, then in Note 8.0 everything is in order, working with two applications at the same time can be called really comfortable.

Performance and autonomy

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 uses an Exynos 4 Quad processor, combining four ARM Cortex-A9 cores with a maximum clock speed of 1.6 GHz and a Mali-400MP graphics accelerator. In other words, hardware this tablet is completely similar to the Galaxy Note II and shows exactly the same results in benchmarks.

The battery life of the Galaxy Note 8.0 is about the same as other compact tablets - with occasional use, you can expect 4-6 days of autonomy, with heavy use, the device lasts for a couple of days. In HD video playback mode at half screen brightness, the Note 8.0 lasted 8 hours - not the best result, but quite decent.

In the dry matter

In my opinion, Galaxy Note 8.0 can be called the “golden mean” in the Galaxy Note line: after all, it has a much larger screen than even the largest phone, but at the same time it is much more portable than full-sized (10-inch) tablets, which allows comfortably hold it with one hand while taking notes with the other. The advantages of the device include good performance, high-quality screen, advanced functionality and very good autonomy.

I consider the Galaxy Note 8.0 to be one of the best Android tablets currently available, and definitely the best in the 7-8 inch segment, which led us to give it a "We Recommended" editorial award.

4 reasons to buy Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0:

  • good performance;
  • excellent ergonomics;
  • S Pen with Wacom technology;
  • thoughtful set of pre-installed software.

1 reason not to buy Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0:

  • narrow screen color gamut.

It was presented in February of this year at the MWC 2013 exhibition. In my opinion, at the moment, Note 8.0 is the quintessence of all the good things that are in the Galaxy Note line. However, first things first.
