An Indonesian man who claimed to be 146 years old has died in his village in Central Java.

According to his documents, Sodimejo, also known as Mba Ghoto (Ghoto's grandfather), was born in December 1870.

At the same time, in Indonesia, the official registration of newborns began only in 1900, and errors with the year of birth are not uncommon. But Ghoto's grandfather's papers were genuine, local authorities told the BBC.

Due to deteriorating health, he was hospitalized on 12 April. Six days later he insisted on being discharged and returned home.

"After he returned from the hospital, he could only eat a couple of spoonfuls of porridge and drink some water," his grandson Suyanto told the BBC.

“So he lasted a couple of days, then until his death, he generally refused food and water,” said the grandson

patience and love

When the BBC correspondent met Grandpa Ghoto last year and asked about his secret to longevity, he said that the most important thing is patience.

"I have lived a long life because I was looked after by people who love me," he added.

Mba Ghoto was a heavy smoker until his death. He outlived four wives, 10 brothers and sisters and all his children.

In his village, Ghoto's grandfather was a hero who became famous for his stories about the war with the Japanese and Dutch colonizers.

Suyanto's grandson said his grandfather was buried on Monday at the local cemetery, a plot he himself bought a few years ago.

A tombstone was placed on the grave, which stood next to the house of Mba Ghoto for several years.

"He didn't ask for anything. Before he died, he just wanted us, his family, to let him go in peace," his grandson said.

According to an independent examination, Ghoto's grandfather was older than the Frenchwoman Jeanne Louise Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122.

He was considered the oldest person in the world in the era of documented history.

Probably everyone wants to live forever. Well, if not forever, then at least for a very long time. Long enough to look at their own children, grandchildren. However, the characteristics of the human body, as it has been proven more than once by scientists, cannot allow

Probably everyone wants to live forever. Well, if not forever, then at least for a very long time. Long enough to look at their own children, grandchildren. However, the peculiarities of the human body, as scientists have proven more than once, cannot allow a person to live longer than he has been allowed to live.

It's all about the structure and special functional arrangement of our cells. You can become the oldest person on earth only under special working conditions, both of the whole organism and of each cell individually. The cells of the body are updated once in a certain period equal to 10-15 years of life.

The update process is complete. In the process of renewal of damaged cells, damaged DNA molecular chains are restored, but do not function to the end, as a new cell does. Over the course of life, the number of such damaged molecules accumulates, body functions deteriorate, and death occurs.

But back to the oldest person on the planet. In 1933, an obituary appeared in American popular magazines, from which mankind learned that a man who at that time was 256 years old had died. His name was Li Ching-Yun, he lived in China and, according to some sources, was born either in 1736 or 1677.

The oldest person on the planet has been collecting, preparing and selling medicinal herbs all his life. His trips to Tibet, Kan-Su, Shanxi, Manchuria and other countries that are the birthplace of rare medicinal plants are known.

The oldest man on earth practiced martial arts in his youth, and the people of Sichuan, the province where Li Ching-Yun lived all his life, say that he was a vigorous and strong man, middle-aged, even when they were very young. Moreover, they told how their grandfathers recalled that they knew this man when they themselves were still small.

The oldest man had 24 wives and raised 180 heirs, many of whom have already died. The oldest person on earth has always followed a strict diet, ate only rice and wine, and drank decoctions of herbs that he collected himself.

Scientists from the University of Chengdu discovered the records of the Chinese Imperial Court on the data of the population census of China, and in these records they found a report congratulating Li Ching-Yun on his fiftieth birthday in 1827, and in 1877 the government did not forget its centenarian, and once again congratulated the oldest person on Earth with the bicentenary.

Just before his death in 1927, the oldest man on the planet was invited to the city of Wang Xian by a certain general Yang Sen, who was amazed by the old man's excellent physical and mental condition. It was surprising, especially since on the eve of death, the oldest person gathered his numerous relatives and announced to them about the end of his life path, and his intention to soon leave our world and return home. He always instructed those around him to keep his heart calm, for this prolongs life.

The oldest person in the world is a multifaceted concept. Here you can turn to official statistics or ancient scriptures, talk about those who are alive today or about those who are no longer with us. In this article, we will try to put everything on the shelves, and determine which person lived the longest, based on facts.

Imagine that people at some point began to live forever. Some will call it the ultimate dream, others will say that the lack of renewal of generations and infinity can slow down the development of all mankind, cause global stagnation. Therefore, human life is finite, and only the Lord knows how much we have been allotted. Awareness of limited time becomes an important motivator for us, killing natural laziness.

Now let's go down from heaven to earth and ask ourselves: how many managed to defeat time and how long did they live? Officially, older people are called centenarians if they are over 90 years old. There are quite a few of these around the world. For example, in the Russian Federation there are approximately 350,000 of them. In an effort to single out the very best of them, this threshold is raised to 110 years, since centenarians are already orders of magnitude smaller. The gap is huge.

The truth is somewhere near

The main question is how to find out the truth. Natural disasters, wars and coincidences lead to the unfortunate loss of documents. In addition, anyone in pursuit of fame can claim to be 200 years old and be convincing enough due to their historical knowledge of the past of their native places.

So, The list of centenarians of the world decided to conditionally divide into 2 groups:

  • Verified - age is documented: a birth certificate or a mark in a church book;
  • Conjectural - strong evidence of longevity is not provided.

An organization called the Gerontological Research Group fixes documents and their authenticity; since 1990, outstanding centenarians have been listed in the Guinness Book of Records. There are also national lists, but they are not recognized by the international community.

Ancient characters, religious figures and saints who have lived for more than one hundred years stand apart. There is no confirmation of this, so it is up to everyone to believe this information or not.

Today, the general list of the oldest people on the planet has 1062 surnames. Only 108 (slightly less than 10%) of them are men.

Living record holders (Top 8)

The current list of living centenarians over 110 years old as of April 2, 2018 has only 8 names, including 7 women:

Woman - Jeanne Calment (122 years old)

Today's list of those who celebrated their centenary is rightfully headed by the Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who was born on February 21, 1875. She lived 122 years and 164 days and died on 4 Aug. 1997 This maximum figure is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. During her longevity, she went through 2 world wars and saw firsthand one of the most famous artists - Vincent Willem van Gogh.

Jeanne associated her life expectancy with the absence of stress (she never worked), physical activity and spending time in nature. Now it's hard to believe, but she smoked, and her diet was not healthy, as the woman did not deny herself the use of wine and sweets. Fruits were always present in the diet of the centenarian.

An interesting story is connected with the name of Jeanne Calment. One lawyer suggested that an elderly woman enter into a contract to inherit the house in exchange for lifetime monthly payments. At that time, he had no idea that the old woman would be the biggest centenarian in the world. During his lifetime, the lawyer never became the owner of the property, and his elderly widow received 2,500 francs for another 24 months.

Man - Jiroemon Kimura (116 years old)

The oldest man is again a resident of Japan! They definitely know some secret to extending a person's "shelf life" and getting into the list of centenarians.

His name is Jiroemon Kimura and he was born in Kyoto Prefecture on 19 Apr. 1897 Died aged 116 years and 54 days due to pneumonia.

The oldest male survivor on Earth worked at the post office, and after retirement he cultivated his own land. A moderate diet of Jiroemon and an amazing craving for an active life played a big role in setting the record.

Where do the official centenarians of the world live

Today, the maximum average life expectancy is noted in:

  1. Japan
  2. Switzerland
  3. Italy
  4. Australia
  5. Israel
  6. France
  7. Norway
  8. Iceland
  9. Spain
  10. Sweden

And in terms of the number of centenarians, high rates are demonstrated by:

  1. USA - 45 of the 100 oldest centenarians;
  2. Japan - 25;
  3. France;
  4. United Kingdom;
  5. Italy.

What can be the conclusion? If a country has achieved a maximum in the overall longevity of the population, this is not a guarantee that it will occupy the first place in terms of the number of long-lived citizens over 110 years old.

In addition to states, individual settlements, regions or tribes are distinguished by a high number of centenarians. For example, the Hunza tribe in India, the Japanese island of Okinawa, and in Russia have such fame.

Scientists, comparing these phenomena, have not found any unambiguous formula for longevity. Nevertheless, a favorable environment, nutrition, an active lifestyle and internal balance are among the most important factors that can make you the oldest person on the planet.

Unconfirmed cases

There are much more non-verified centenarians: 52 living and 445 people who lived from 115 to 256 years.

The five living unofficial record holders look like this:

  1. Mom Efisho, 194 years old (1824) - Nigeria;
  2. Mahashta Murasi, 183 years old (01/06/1835) - India;
  3. Kakek Beruzia Vamiarja, 147 years old (07/01/1870) - Indonesia;
  4. Anami, aged 143 (1875) - Indonesia;
  5. Maritina Wangatala, aged 139 (1879) - Solomon Islands.

Presumably long-lived people from the past (Top 5):

  1. Li Qingyun, 256 years old (1677-1933) - China.
  2. Devraha Baba, 250 years old (1740-1990) - India;
  3. Thomas Carne, 207 years old (1381-1588) - England;
  4. Anna Feinset, 195 years old (1809-2004) - USA;
  5. Elizabeth M. Mahoney, 191 (1808-2000) - USA.

Today's championship belongs to the Chinese herbalist, which we talked about in a special one. It is not known for certain how long Li actually lived, since unambiguous evidence has never been found.

Russian statistics

Officially, there are 15.7 thousand elderly people in Russia who have celebrated their centenary. In the period from 2015-2017. this figure has grown:

  • +600 people by 2016
  • +923 people by 2017

The highest life expectancy, according to Rosstat, is observed in the following regions:

  1. Ingushetia - 80.82;
  2. Dagestan - 77.23;
  3. Moscow - 77.09;
  4. Kabardino-Balkaria - 75.12;
  5. North Ossetia - Alania - 75.05;
  6. St. Petersburg - 74.90;

  8. Chechen Republic - 74.20;
  9. Republic of Tatarstan - 73.64;
  10. Stavropol Territory - 73.40.

Now you have a detailed idea of who is now the oldest person on Earth. If you are on fire with the idea of becoming, pardon the tautology, the longest-lived person in the world, follow those related to health, nutrition, lifestyle, relationships with the outside world and other people. And then you are guaranteed to push back your deadline - who knows where our maximum is.

Each person wants to live as long as possible, so he looks with admiration at centenarians who have seen a lot in their lifetime. As a rule, if among our friends and acquaintances there are relatives who have reached the age of 95, they become the object of pride and close attention. At the same time, there are people whose lives will certainly be envied by many.

Today's top 10 ranking is dedicated to the oldest people in the world who have lived for more than 110 years. Jeanne regularly practiced cycling and smoked up to a hundred years. She believed that the secret to longevity was extremely simple: "When problems cannot be solved, there is no need to worry." Kalman passed away in 1997.

Note that all the people included in our rating had official confirmation of their own age. We deliberately did not include people such as Shigechiyo Izumi, who is estimated to be 120 years old, or Shirali Muslimov, an Azerbaijani shepherd who has reached the age of 168, since there are no official documents confirming their age.

In Asia, they found a man who claims to be the oldest inhabitant of the Earth. According to official documents, a man named Mbah Goto from the island of Java in Indonesia was allegedly born in the century before last, he is 145 years old, and he is the same age as Vladimir Lenin.

According to the BBC, Goto's passport shows the date of birth as December 31, 1870. However, Goto's original documents were long lost, and new passport he was issued on the basis of his own statements. Therefore, experts cannot give the Indonesian the official title of the oldest inhabitant of the planet.

Local authorities assure that the elder is not lying, but they began to officially record the dates of birth in Indonesia only from 1900, and earlier there were already errors in the numbers. “Grandfather can simply be mistaken without malicious intent, it is possible that due to his advanced age (and he, indeed, looks over a hundred years old), he simply forgot the date of his birth. This has already happened to other long-livers. It is beneficial for officials to support the legend of a super-long-liver in order to attract attention, and hence tourists and money. In fact, people don’t live that long, it’s from the category of fantasy,” Vadim Maksimenko, an expert on records, told us.

The secret is patience

According to Goto, he survived 10 brothers and sisters, buried four wives, the last of whom died about thirty years ago. The children of the Indonesian have long since died. Goto is cared for by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Without assistance, he cannot eat, drink, or walk. He listens to the radio almost all the time. In his youth, the long-liver earned money by rural labor and fishing.

“Grandfather is unpretentious in everyday life, does not require anything special from food or any special conditions for life. True, he continues to smoke, smokes like a steam locomotive, - the great-grandson of the Indonesian Suryanto told reporters. - The secret of his longevity is patience. There is a saying in Indonesia: "Patience people will live long lives."

Goto himself admits that a quarter of a century ago he began to prepare for death and ordered a tombstone for his own grave. “The only thing I want now is to die. But, apparently, the time has not yet come, ”the long-liver admits. The scientific community perceived the news of the 145-year-old Goto with skepticism, just like the news of the alleged 171-year-old resident of Nigeria and the 163-year-old resident of Ethiopia, whose dates of birth were also not documented.

The oldest inhabitants of the earth

Meanwhile, the official title of the oldest inhabitant of the planet still remains with the 122-year-old Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died 19 years ago. During her life, two world wars took place, the first man flew into space and the Internet was invented.

And the other day, at the 120th year of her life, a Chinese woman, Fu Suqing, who was considered the oldest inhabitant of the Earth at that moment, died. The woman left almost 70 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Of the living centenarians, 112-year-old Israel Kristal, a survivor of the Holocaust, is recognized as the oldest.

In the Polish archives, documents were found that he lived in the city of Lodz in 1918, and at that time he was 15 years old. Crystal was born on September 15, 1903 in Zharnow, which was located on the territory of the then Russian Empire, then his family moved to Lodz, where Israel began working at a confectionery factory. During the Nazi occupation, he and his wife were sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Crystal's wife has died. By the end of the war, he weighed about 37 kilograms. Then Crystal settled in Israel, where he opened a confectionery shop and remarried.
