The Art of War in the Land of the Rising Sun. Early Access Impressions of Warbands: Bushido. Warbands: Bushido is a board game-style cross-platform tactical wargame System Requirements Warbands: Bushido
Hello. I have not stuck in any toys for a long time, but then I discovered a very unusual game for myself. I haven't played anything like this on the iPad. Warbands: Bushido is a tactical turn-based miniature game. In the App Store, it is positioned as a board game, although Warbands has nothing to do with board games - it's just a digital game that could theoretically be transferred to the table.
Warbands used to be a paid game, but now it's a shareware game with in-app purchases. Unfortunately, this negatively affected the complexity of the game. It seemed to me that it was very problematic to play without built-in purchases. But, as an experienced player, I was not afraid of this nuance.
I am glad that the game is of Russian origin, so the average player will not have any problems with mastering the rules. All in Russian...
Brief description of the gameplay
Warbands: Bushido gameplay is based on battles on a field consisting of hexes. The fields may be different. Somewhere there will be three bridges and three meeting points, somewhere in the middle of the map an impenetrable forest may grow, somewhere there will be shelters. You have several warriors, the enemy too. The task is simple - kill all the enemies.
Warriors move in order of agility. They have 4 options:
- make a move - move the hero a few hexes;
- to attack;
- pull time - the move is transferred to the end of the queue, but the attack is weaker;
- pass;
Also, before the action / move, you can play a card or cards for mana, which can somehow help with an extra attack, movement, luck, etc ...
How do attacks happen? Players roll the dice for two units. The number of dice depends on the unit's strength and current health. Then the number of cubes with the attack of one unit and the second is compared. Who dealt more attacks, then deals damage equal to the difference.
By the way, the combat is quite controversial. That is, one powerful unit can kick 4 small ones, simply because they have fewer cubes and are less likely to do damage. In such cases, help out cards that can turn the outcome of the battle.
Interface and other features
Warbands is very reminiscent of modern digital collectible games. Judge for yourself - there are boosters for cards separately and separately for miniatures. The game allows you to turn objectionable cards/minks into dust and create the desired characters from the dust.
Warbands has skirmishes, an arena, and even a campaign mode.
If you want everything at once, then you need to invest money, but on the other hand, almost every in-app purchase has an alternative price in coins that you need to save up.
What can be bought in the Collection section?
- Miniature Boosters - Contains three miniatures, one of which is rare or legendary. Miniatures are needed to fight. For coins, miniatures can be upgraded by adding parameters and abilities to them.
- Command Cards - Contains three cards, one of which is rare or legendary. I advise you to buy a few boosters with cards for the first extra coins, because there are very few of them by default and even a few cards are missing even to a full hand.
- Scenarios - There are three campaigns available. One is free and three are either for money (379 rubles) or for coins (500 coins).
Fights - battles with real opponents online. Despite the fact that the game is turn-based, online is completely synchronous.
Campaign - missions where your squad will go through a series of battles. Curiously, dead heroes don't carry over to the next mission, so sometimes it's better to replay a particular battle if you've suffered casualties in it. The campaign is difficult - I passed some missions without losses with only 2-10 attempts ... In total, I killed 4 hours for the first campaign.
Arena - so far I have not seen what it is, since I do not have enough legendary heroes. They did not come across in boosters.
Disadvantages of Warbands
Required internet connection. Well, this will always be considered a disadvantage when there is offline content in the game.
Failed training. It so implicitly indicates what and how to do that I spent all the dust with a random click and now I have a training task hanging in my outstanding tasks - to make a miniature out of dust.
Sometimes battles drag out due to the equal strength of two units. That is, half of the rolls simply do not have an effect, since the same number of attacks is thrown on them. Yes, and the cubes are strange - the mana turns out somehow quite randomly (there are 2 attacks + 2 mana on six faces; just 2 attacks and 2 misses).
Conclusion: Warbands Bushido is a good tactical game. It would be perfect if not for f2p and more elegant cube combat. If the game was a board game, I would hardly have pecked at it, but on a digital device it is quite possible to kill a few hours or even days and not regret it. 4 out of 5.

For some time now, I often look into the Steam Early Access section in search of interesting projects. Lucky not often, but today luck smiled at me in the form of Warbands: Bushido from the domestic studio Red Unit Studios. The game is a turn-based skirmish wargame stylized as a board game. I was wondering what our compatriots could bring to life. And, looking ahead, I will say that I did not regret either the time or the money spent on the game.
The Warbands project is not just a series of games, but rather a collection of general rules, a gameplay concept, which will be complemented by the features of the setting. In the future, the developers plan to highlight the features of military science of various eras from the warriors of the Ancient World to modern conflicts. It is noteworthy that projects within the series will be published not only on PC, but also on Android and IOS mobile platforms. The game features several modes: training, story company, not yet available, and online battles. We will purchase individual campaign scenarios for in-game currency, which is completely optional. You can spend time only in battles with live opponents or plunge into the history of Japan.
The action in Warbands: Bushido takes place in feudal Japan. But forget about the shoguns and great commanders - in the game we have to pay attention to the completely invisible characters of that era - ordinary warriors, robbers, peasants. Warbands: Bushido will reveal their own stories during the grand conflicts of the past. The project attracts not only with its idea, but also with its execution. The tabletop wargame stylization looks pretty fresh and is well-executed. Miniatures of warriors are made on a level and delight the eye with detailed work. For example, on a ronin figurine, you can even see some small details of clothing and armor. The number of miniatures themselves is quite large and they open throughout the game, and the process of opening miniatures is close to real life. By fighting, we earn coins, and for them we buy boosters with figures of soldiers. Moreover, in each booster there is a chance of falling out of a figurine of a certain degree of rarity. Naturally, the presence and possibility of selling unnecessary soldiers.
It is noteworthy that each character in the game has its own unique characteristics and skills that open up with an increase in the level of the soldier. For example, at the second level, a deserter can perform a penetrating strike through an obstacle without causing a retaliatory strike from the enemy. In addition to the life bar, miniatures have armor and agility indicators. Armor increases the number of hits that a warrior can withstand, and the order of moves and the number of cells that a figure can move depends on dexterity. The gameplay of Warbands: Bushido is turn-based combat on small maps. The battlefield is divided into hexes on which warriors move. There are also various obstacles, thanks to them good opportunities for tactical maneuvers open up. For example, an archer shooting through an obstacle has a high chance of missing, but coming close to the obstacle, the penalty is lost. That is, the more obstacles in the way of the archer, the worse he will shoot. But shooters with tempo don't have such a penalty initially, turning into a significant threat even at a great distance. Each of the warriors has a certain number of dice that are rolled when attacking. Depending on the combination that has fallen, the fighter may miss, parry the blow, or get the opportunity to counterattack after a successful attack by the enemy, and here the great Random takes over. For example, during one of the battles, my peasant managed to parry all the blows of a heavily armed ronin, inflicting one point of damage on him and allowing him to win the battle. During the battle, order cards are available to us: they allow you to use special abilities that have big influence on the course of the battle. An increase in movement range, damage, the ability to scare an enemy soldier, and these are just a few of the vast number of cards available. By the way, we also open them by purchasing them in the in-game store. Initially, only three positions for warriors and ten slots for orders are available to us. Each warrior has a certain “cost” in warband points. The better the warrior, the more points he requires. Therefore, you often have to choose between the number and quality of warriors, which by the way quite strongly affects the gameplay. Not always quality can beat quantity and vice versa. Having lost two of his squad in battle, my samurai managed to turn the tide of battle with a full-blooded enemy team in a few accurate blows and brought a well-deserved victory.
I have told only a little about the features of Warbands: Bushido. There are many of them and each should be given special attention. The game attracts with pleasant graphics, freshness of thought and an interesting concept. Running just once I couldn't stop fighting again and again. Each fight is a separate story that you can change at your whim.
After playing for a decent amount of time, I was able to form some opinion on Warbands: Bushido. In my opinion, this is a far-reaching, original and unusual project that will win the hearts of not only computer game lovers, but also fans of board wargames. But still, I suggest you make your own opinion about Warbands: Bushido. Good luck and see you on the battlefield!
