At the international exhibition of consumer electronics CES 2017, which traditionally takes place in Las Vegas in early January, at the booth of ZTE, among other things, a curious smartphone was presented ZTE Blade V8 .

The model was interesting in two ways: a dual main camera capable of taking 3D photos and achieving a bokeh effect, and, at the same time, an affordable price of about $230 (pre-order in the USA).

Well, we have the opportunity to test the device right now - on the KV test ZTE Blade V8.

Appearance, design

The smartphone is delivered in a small cardboard box decorated in bright colors.

Inside there is the device itself, a 5 V, 1 A power adapter, a USB type A-USB type B micro interface cable, a stereo headset, a SIM card eject key and, a pleasant surprise, 3D glasses, which are a cardboard base with inserted lenses and a slot for nose - a kind of simplified version of Google Cardboard. Be sure to see what these points in practice.

So, the device itself. In the hand is a 5.2-inch smartphone in a metal case, as noted above, with a dual camera and a fingerprint scanner built into the mechanical button Home- here's your "budget"!

The appearance of the device is pretty: the protective glass completely covers the front side, the back face is slightly sloping, the corners of the case are significantly rounded, and the edges are beaten with chamfers. The body color is Dark Gray, Champagne Gold, Silver, Rose Gold are also offered, although in reality these colors are likely to be called differently.

There are two holes in the protective glass on the front side of the smartphone: in one, at the bottom, there is a mechanical button framed by a chrome frame Home, in the other, on top - a mesh covering the earpiece. On the sides of the mechanical button there are two more touch buttons - Back and Latest Apps. The buttons are not highlighted in any way, but are indicated by a backlight when activated.

If desired, they can be swapped.

On the back side of the case, at the very top, there is a photomodule of the main, dual camera protruding by 1 mm: two lenses and an LED flash between them. It is clearly seen that the body is not all-metal - 10 mm plastic caps are installed on top and bottom of it.

Interestingly, the volume buttons located on the right side are separated. Below them is the on / off button. As a result, we have three buttons of the same length in a row, but so that there is no confusion, the latter is almost twice as wide and has notches that are well “read” with a finger.

On the left side, you can see a tray for installing SIM cards (nano format) and a memory card (the SIM2 slot is combined with a slot for a micro SD card), and at the ends there is a 3.5 mm jack for connecting a headset and a noise-canceling microphone hole (top), USB type B micro port framed by six holes on each side (bottom).

Behind the holes to the right of the USB port is a multimedia speaker, and to the left is a conversational microphone.

The performance of the platform was evaluated based on the results of synthetic tests.

They are average, which allows you to predict the normal operation of the interface, smooth switching between applications, scaling without jerks in the browser and editors, but hardly stable operation in demanding games. By the way, the smartphone partially supports virtual reality applications, and is capable of producing 4K.

Use, functionality of the software

When you get a phone with a dual camera, you start taking 3D photos. Proven in practice.

When you first start the camera, a small instruction on how to use it starts.

The following modes are available in the viewfinder window: A photo, Video, Live and Dual.

Additional shooting modes and effects are available on separate icons.

There are few settings for the camera. The maximum image resolution (4:3) of the main camera is 4160x3120, video can be recorded in 1080p 30 fps.

3D photo shooting is performed in the Dual, the camera takes a picture for each eye and combines it in one picture.

For viewing, it is enough to put a smartphone with a 3D photo displayed on the screen on the table and, using the supplied stereo glasses, select the focal length. The simplicity/effect ratio is impressive.

The focus of the front camera is on selfies and post-processing.

The maximum image resolution (4:3) of the front camera is also 4160x3120, video is recorded in 1080p 30 fps.

It is worth saying a few words about the display of the device: viewing angles are good, color reproduction is at the level, there is an automatic brightness adjustment. At the same time, the resolution of the matrix is ​​​​full 1920x1080, and the resolution is 425 ppi. Programmatically, you can change the saturation or adjust the hue.

There are functions for working with gloves and eye protection, expressed in a warm yellowish (minimum) or frankly yellow (maximum) screen color when activated. Five point sensor.

The fingerprint sensor built into the mechanical button is a tribute to the fashionable and convenient trend. Subjectively, someone may like a separate, on the back side, it is easy to adapt to this, because you can independently adjust the pressing force. Works great the first time.

Curiously, the manufacturer's website lists the battery capacity as 2730 mA, while the utilities showed a value of 2540 mA. Nevertheless, the smartphone turned out to be well optimized: in standby mode, with periodic photo / video shooting, surfing the Internet and running synthetic tests, 60% of the battery lasted more than 4 days. View 150 min. film "ate" another 30%.

Well, the software part. The device runs on Android 7.0 operating system, on top of which the proprietary ZTE MiFavor 4.2 shell is installed.

The interface is clear.

A very common question in our VKontakte group is: recommend a smartphone with FHD resolution. And if at first the amounts “up to 20-25 thousand” sounded, now people are increasingly asking about models with FHD and a price of up to 15 thousand rubles.

Then, as a rule, these same people specify that they need not only a high-quality display, but also an NFC module! And so that with a dual camera and with a good appearance. That is, gradually the needs of buyers grow, and the amount that they are willing to spend for a particular chip decreases.

Another common requirement is the current version of Android, and without any shells. It would seem that with such requirements, there are almost no models left, but in fact they are, there are not many of them, but they already exist.

And just for such, the most demanding customers, ZTE was guided by creating the Blade V9. Here you have FHD + resolution, and a new aspect ratio of the display 18:9, and a dual camera, and excellent appearance, and even such trifles as NFC are not forgotten! However, in an attempt to fit into the framework of 15 thousand rubles, the company had to save on a number of parameters, and on which ones, we will just tell you in this review.

Design, dimensions, controls

You know, I was always a little offended by the Blade line, against the background of Nubia and Axon, it looked pale and boring. There were usually no interesting design moves or unusual case materials in these devices, they were typical mid-range phones. And then the company shows its Blade V9 at an exhibition in Barcelona with a chic (albeit not the most original) design. See how cool the device looks, especially in blue. Photos do not convey this, but if you twist the smartphone in your hand, then its color will change depending on the lighting.

Initially, three colors of the model were presented: black, gold and blue, but at the moment, only black and gold versions can be pre-ordered on the ZTE official website. I hope that the blue one will appear later, because it is she who is the most beautiful among all.

The back cover is made of glass with an oleophobic coating, while the frame is made of aluminum. The smartphone lies perfectly in the hand, its dimensions are 151.4 x 70.6 x 7.5 m, and the weight is 140 grams. And although the glass is quickly covered with fingerprints, they are easy to get rid of thanks to the oleophobic coating, just wipe the cover with a cloth.

On the right are the power button and volume rocker, and on the left is a tray for two nanoSIM and microSD cards, a hybrid slot, cards up to 400 GB are supported. The power button is ribbed and very well located, it immediately falls under the thumb, it is also easy to find in the dark.

On the bottom end there is a microUSB port, an external speaker mesh and a microphone, and on the top end there is a minijack for headphones and a second microphone. Despite the fact that there is only one speaker, it has a fairly clear sound and a good volume margin. Of course, it will not replace a wireless speaker, but you can watch YouTube without headphones without much discomfort.

Above the display you can see the front camera, light and proximity sensors, as well as a small LED indicator. The area below the screen is empty, as this model uses on-screen buttons. By the way, their position is configurable, and if desired, they can be hidden altogether through the settings.

The front camera can also work as Face ID, the system creates and remembers your portrait, and then you can unlock your smartphone just by looking at it. And although recognition works correctly even in poor lighting conditions, its key problem is that it requires you to turn on the smartphone screen for it to work. As a result, it takes more time than just touching the fingerprint scanner. In addition, the face unlock time takes about two seconds, which is also very long.

As I wrote above, the back cover is made of glass, the only elements on it are a dual camera and a fingerprint scanner. The latter works quickly, there were almost no erroneous positives.

For a week of use, I did not have any problems with the assembly, the device is perfectly assembled, there are no backlashes and squeaks.

Screen

For its price, the smartphone has an excellent display: a high-quality oleophobic coating, high resolution, a wide range of brightness and viewing angles close to the maximum.

At the same time, in the sun, information from the screen also remains distinguishable, even if it is not visible as well as indoors.

As part of the white balance, a slight shift to cold colors is visible, but without a direct comparison with other smartphones, you will not notice this. The smartphone has a separate night mode, when it is turned on, the colors go into warm tones, but this is not implemented as well as in the flagship models, at the maximum value the display becomes very yellow. In general, I usually just turned off the night mode. There are no separate settings for color reproduction, however, during the use I did not have a desire to “tweak” the color gamut of the smartphone.

Battery

To begin with, I would like to note the very good behavior of the smartphone in sleep mode, during the night it was discharged by just a couple of percent, these are excellent indicators for an inexpensive model.

With everyday use, you can expect about three hours of display on (twitter, email, web surfing, mobile data usage) at maximum brightness. As you can see, in the video mode, this figure becomes 2.5 times larger.

But there is no fast charging in this smartphone, it evenly charges in almost two hours.

In terms of autonomy, the results are average, it is clear that the smartphone will lose to competitors with a 4000 mAh battery.

Memory, chipset, performance

To be honest, I doubted that Qualcomm's 400 series would be enough to serve FHD+ resolution. Fortunately, my fears were not confirmed, the smartphone works fine in the built-in interface, browser, third-party applications and most games. However, keep in mind that you should not count on maximum graphics in the same tanks with such a chipset.

I was also pleasantly pleased with the level of heating of the device: during the sequential run of various benchmarks, the smartphone case practically did not heat up.

Communication options

I was surprised to find that this smartphone does not only support .ac, but even dual-band Wi-Fi, although almost all devices in this segment support it. But, unlike the same competitors, Blade V9 has an NFC module, the device can be used for Google Pay.

Camera

The camera interface looks quite standard, a bit like an iPhone application, at least in terms of switching modes.

In addition to traditional shooting, there are several additional modes, for example, using augmented reality, you can add hearts, captions, a cloud with rain or other elements to a portrait. Looks like a prank, but maybe someone will like it.

The camera also has a mode for adjusting the aperture value, this is done in a software way, and, in my opinion, it looks rather clumsy. It can be seen that the blur is soft and not always neatly cropped. The same applies to the portrait mode, in my opinion, the software blurs the background too aggressively, as a result, the picture looks unnatural.

I have no complaints about daytime shooting, the pictures are good, but in difficult artificial lighting the camera does not perform so well, this applies not only to the clarity of the picture, but also to the white balance, pay attention to the photo with a night light, the smartphone incorrectly identified on it BB.

In night shots, the device greatly raises the ISO, as a result, the photo turns out to be overexposed, if you lower the brightness manually, the picture comes out better, but the detail is still not enough. In the pictures below, on the left, the automatic mode, and on the right, with manual lowering of the ISO.

The selfie camera has a dedicated portrait mode and various beautifiers, but it doesn't work very well. With enhancements, you don't look very natural, and soft blur is done sloppily. On the left is the photo without blur, on the right is with blur.

The maximum resolution for video shooting is FHD, the recording quality is not very good, the focus sometimes floats.

Multimedia features

Let me remind you that there is only one external speaker in this model, despite the presence of two meshes (a microphone is hidden behind the second), it has good sound quality, you are unlikely to miss an incoming call, and you can watch a couple of videos quite comfortably.

As for the sound in the headphones, you can’t call it anything other than “normal”, the device sounds the same as the rest of its competitors, that is, if you switch to this ZTE from some inexpensive Huawei or Xiaomi, you won’t hear much difference.

Software features

And although the ZTE website still states that the smartphone is running the MiFavor shell, in fact we have stock Android 8.0, which is great. Its own shell was the weak point of the Blade line, it noticeably lost to the same MIUI, Flyme or EMUI, so abandoning it in favor of regular Android is a definite plus. Of the additions from ZTE, I will only highlight its own camera interface, the presence of Russian letters in the dialer and the pre-installed UC Browser.

Impression

I had no complaints about the quality of speech transmission for a week of use, you and your interlocutor hear each other perfectly.

The start of smartphone sales begins on April 6, its cost will be 15,000 rubles. However, if you place a pre-order, then the model can be obtained for 13,500 rubles. I can't help but note that this is a very good price, considering that a price tag of 300 euros was announced at the presentation.

For ZTE, the release of the Blade V9 is a big step forward. Firstly, this is the first model with an excellent design, secondly, the first device without the terrible MiFavor shell, and thirdly, a very good offer in terms of price-quality ratio. From the strengths of the model, I will highlight an excellent display, cool appearance, stock Android, good battery life and an NFC module. The downsides are the average camera and the lack of a USB Type-C port.

But competitors are also on the alert and can offer several worthy alternatives. First of all, of course, I remember Honor 9 Lite, one of the bestsellers in this segment. It has similar specifications, in fact, the key difference is only in the shell, and you will need to choose between stock Android or EMUI.

Do not forget about Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, it is just sold for the same 15,000 rubles. On the side of this model, a larger battery and a functional MIUI shell, but the Blade V9 has a more spectacular appearance and has an NFC module.

Also, I would also remember Meizu M6s. The model loses in display resolution, but costs 14 thousand, has fast charging and a more practical aluminum case.

In general, ZTE was able to show a good model in the segment up to 15 thousand rubles, it looks worthy against the background of strong competitors from other companies, and even surpasses them in some points (remember the same NFC module).

When looking at the specs of the ZTE Blade A6, the first thing you notice is the 5,000 mAh battery. Here it is happiness - two days of work and for 10-13 thousand rubles. And the rest of the characteristics are normal: a fresh Snapdragon 435, 3 GB of RAM, a fingerprint scanner, a metal case. In short, an ordinary state employee from good ones plus a battery! We must take.

But before you run to the store for your phone, spend 20 minutes of your time on ZTE Blade A6 review. The dust will subside.

Design

Imagine what a typical smartphone for 10 thousand rubles looks like. Not bad, not good, just typical. Here ZTE Blade A6 is just that. 2.5D glass front, metal back, plastic inserts top and bottom. In general, the case is not all-metal.

The "bezel" is made of glossy plastic, sufficiently resistant to scratches. It is clear that after a few months of use without a case, scuffs will appear, but after a week of use, the bezel still looks perfect.

The smartphone is also distinguished by dimensions, because of the capacious battery it is not at all small - 8.5 millimeters in thickness and 160 grams of weight. However, I can not say that using a smartphone is directly inconvenient. Will do.

There are three touch buttons below the screen: a central circle that returns to the home screen, and two dots. The dots are responsible for the "Back" and "Multitasking Menu" actions, they can be swapped.

On the back is a fingerprint scanner. Sometimes he makes mistakes, it does not work instantly, but all this is within reason, in general, his work does not bother him at all.

Screen

According to the specifications, the ZTE Blade A6 display looks standard: 5.2 inches, HD resolution (1280 x 720). There is also a 2.5D glass on top of the matrix, and even with an adequate oleophobic coating. But otherwise, he disappointed even me, who is quite unpretentious about the quality of user displays.

It immediately catches your eye that the screen is faded, it lacks contrast. Over time, of course, you get used to this, but after a normal smartphone, the picture will disappoint you for some time.

Auto brightness is something with something. She is completely inappropriate.

At first I thought that I was inadvertently covering the sensor myself (although normal phones somehow learned to ignore this). But no, even if you look "without hands", the brightness either goes to zero, then returns again. Auto-brightness is not about the Blade A6, so welcome to 2010, adjust it yourself.

Performance

Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 in a smartphone for 10-13 thousand rubles - is this normal? In my opinion, it is quite. Yes, only 28 nanometers, which means that the energy efficiency is so-so. But what difference does it make to us, the battery is big. Cortex-A53 cores have a maximum frequency of only 1.4 GHz, and Adreno 505 is responsible for the graphics. In short, not so hot, but normal. This, at least, is not some ancient quad-core MTK with Cortex-A7 cores, and even more so not Spreadtrum, at the mention of which one must be baptized.

RAM is also enough, 3 GB. The smartphone pulls toys, not only all sorts of runners, but even Gangstar 4 works. With a creak, of course, but you can play.

But what does all of the above matter if the smartphone stupidly works poorly in the simplest tasks. Imagine that you are arguing on some topic that concerns you. And your opponent simply does not react for a second before answering any of your remarks. Then he answers, but this second without words and emotions brings you to white heat. It's the same with the Blade A6.

Waiting to switch layout. Waiting to roll up Instagram. Waiting to open settings. Waiting a long time on loading screens in games.

Because of this slowness, the phone simply does not want to be used when you need to switch between applications. For example, if they send me a link to a text document where I need to clarify a few points in Google and comment on them in a telegram, then the hell with two, I will do it on the Blade A6. The nerves won't last.

Thoughtfulness is still half the trouble. The smartphone is also unresponsive.

Responsiveness is a very subtle matter. I suspect that even subjective. It happens that you use a smartphone and it reacts to touches moment by moment. This device is responsive. And sometimes there is a barely perceptible delay between the touch and the action; the feeling that you need to press harder on the screen. Such a device is unresponsive, and the Blade A6 is just one of them. I really hope that you understand me.

cameras

In terms of photo and video shooting capabilities, the ZTE Blade A6 fully works out its money.

Above the head does not jump, but does not upset. And about the main, and about the front camera, you can say the same thing: during the day it's normal, at night it's terrible.

Main camera

At the back, a 13-megapixel module with f / 2.2 aperture is modestly located. Photos on the street, even in cloudy weather, pleased - good detail, tolerable dynamic range, white balance is also in order. But as soon as the sun goes down or you move into a room with artificial light, the photos become terrible.

From the front, the device looks like any fancy smartphone with a stretched screen. Here we can only note touch buttons, rounded corners of the case and the fact that there are frames around the display, although they are rather thin on the sides.

From the back, the phone resembles several popular models at once, for example, Honor 8 due to the glare glass, two lenses and a round fingerprint scanner. Dual cameras are located horizontally and seem to be united by an oval frame, like the iPhone 8 Plus. There is nothing more to say here, except to complain about the glass case - beautiful, but not so practical: slippery and short-lived.

Blade B9 dimensions - 151.4 × 70.6 × 7.5 mm, weight - 140 grams. The smartphone is quite thin and surprisingly light, the same weight as small, compact and. Even a small one turned out to be heavier, despite the big difference in diagonals (4.7 vs. 5.7 inches).

ZTE Blade V9 will be available in two colors: black and gold.

Screen

ZTE Blade V9 is one of the company's first smartphones with a 2:1 (or 18:9) screen. It occupies approximately 78.5% of the surface area of ​​the device, which is slightly more than that of, but lower than the same. The display uses an IPS-matrix, the resolution is quite high - 2160 × 1080 pixels. The pixel density in this scenario is 424 per inch, in terms of clarity, this is enough for the eyes. Nothing more is known about the screen yet.

cameras

The ZTE Blade V9 cameras look interesting: two rear cameras with 16 and 5 MP and a front camera with 13 MP. Judging by the published characteristics, they can be expected to shoot at the level of average or above average.

It is not yet clear how exactly the main camera duo works, but most likely they can shoot with a blur effect, as they did. The declared parameters of the 16 MP module look good: a fairly wide aperture (f / 1.8) and slightly larger than average pixels (1.12 microns). There is phase focusing and double flash. But the additional module does not have autofocus at all. The front camera looks mysterious - apart from a resolution of 13 MP, nothing is known about it yet.

Communications

The set of communications ZTE Blade V9 is typical for its level:

The only thing that can be highlighted is that in some versions the smartphone will have an NFC chip, and this is already interesting. But Wi-Fi on one band is a little sad. The phone supports two nanoSIM cards, but the slot for the second hybrid. The connector is microUSB 2.0, the manufacturer is not in a hurry to install a new type C USB port in the mid-range model.

Battery

The battery life of the Blade V9 is likely to be average. The device uses a 3200 mAh battery, which is slightly above average. For comparison, in - 3000 mAh, and in a larger one - 3300 mAh. You should not expect something incredible, but it should be enough for a day or a day and a half. The smartphone chipset supports QuickCharge 3.0 fast charging, but the manufacturer has not yet announced its support in this device.

Performance

Smartphone performance should be average or above average. The ZTE Blade V9 uses the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset. Despite the fact that this is an entry-level solution, there are eight cores at once, operating at up to 1.8 GHz. The amount of RAM can be 2, 3 or 4 GB. Adreno 506 is used as a graphics accelerator, which we have already seen in the Snapdragon 625 chipset (used in, and many, many others). So you can expect the Blade V9 to perform well in daily use and most games.

Peculiarities

ZTE Blade V9 comes out on the latest version of Android Oreo. Unusual can be called a glass design, a dual camera and an elongated 18:9 screen. although these are all very popular trends today. In particular, you can add the declared weight - only 140 grams, which corresponds more to 4.5 or 4.7-inch smartphones, and not to a 5.7-inch "blade". The company also announced the unlocking of the smartphone by the face.
