The liver is a filter organ of our body through which all beneficial and toxic substances pass. For some time, the liver in healthy people is able to withstand increased loads, but then the working resource of the organ is depleted and liver failure may occur.

How to protect the liver from increased stress when taking medications? What can you do at home? In this article we will try to find the answer to such important questions.

How to help the liver on your own?

Living in the modern world is quite difficult. Our lives often contain stress, poor quality food, insufficient physical activity, and bad habits.

Modern medicine drugs have a special effect on the human body. At the moment, many diseases have been defeated or brought under control, pharmacological drugs provide adequate treatment and pain relief. But all these chemicals have a destructive effect on human internal organs. The liver is directly involved in the metabolism of medications.

Some of them are hepatotoxic and can damage healthy liver tissue - antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, hormonal agents.

Their side effects begin already at the stage of digestion in the stomach and intestines, but the liver takes on the main burden of neutralizing chemical compounds.

How to support the liver at home without additional medications? We should start with the prevention of diseases of such an important organ - it is simple and accessible to any person.

Protecting the liver at home is as follows:

  • Eliminate food waste from your diet - chips, crackers, various snacks. They are saturated with various synthetic additives, carcinogenic substances, and contain excess salt.
  • Limit the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
  • Drink a lot of liquid - the classic recommendation is up to 2 liters of clean water per day, not counting tea, coffee, compotes, and first courses. This will speed up the process of removing toxic substances from the body, including when taking medications.
  • Review your own diet. With normal functioning of the digestive organs, it is enough to simply use the principles of a healthy diet - avoid fried, heavy, overly spicy foods. The menu should include lean meat, a large amount of vegetables and fruits.
  • Use medications such as antibiotics, antidepressants, hormonal drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs only after consulting a doctor. This will help reduce the negative effects of medications.
  • Taking hepatoprotectors - medications to protect, restore and prevent liver damage. Even such drugs should be used only as prescribed by a doctor.

How to support the liver while taking antibiotics?

Antibiotics are a very important and sometimes irreplaceable tool for fighting infections, but they have many side effects and complications.

Not all drugs of this pharmacological group have a direct hepatoxic effect. Antibiotics often have a detrimental effect on the body's microflora. This is a kind of “heavy artillery” that affects not only infectious pathogens, but also its own beneficial microorganisms.

As long as the liver is healthy, it copes with its main function - neutralizing toxins, including antibiotics.

If the functions of an organ are impaired, the patient is diagnosed with hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis or other diseases, then the drugs are not eliminated in full, but continue to have a pathological effect on the organs and systems.

How to protect your liver when taking an antibiotic? There are several rules:

  • Do not self-medicate. Antibiotics should be prescribed by the attending physician solely according to indications.
  • Follow your doctor's instructions. Take antibiotics as a course, not until symptoms disappear.
  • Take medications that normalize intestinal microflora - probiotics.
  • If you have previously been diagnosed with any liver disease, then it is advisable to take hepatoprotectors during treatment. Your attending physician will help you decide on the choice of drug.

Liver protection in cancer treatment

Oncopathology of any organ is a dangerous disease. The mortality rate for each type of cancer is different. The success of further treatment depends on the type of cancer, the presence of metastasis, the severity of the process and existing concomitant diseases. A number of techniques are used to treat oncological diseases - surgical interventions, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Medicines used in oncology are themselves extremely aggressive substances.

Chemotherapy kills tumor cells, but it has many side effects and interferes with the functioning of the liver and kidneys.

Complications after chemotherapy:

How to keep your liver healthy during chemotherapy? Before treatment, you need to discuss all the nuances, rules of behavior and preparation for aggressive drug treatment. Hepatoprotectors are included in the mandatory list of drugs that are indicated for chemotherapy. You need to take such tablets on the recommendation of your doctor. The choice of drug depends on the diagnosis and general condition of the patient.

Herbal treatment

In addition to medications, you can support the liver with herbs during chemotherapy. But any herbal remedies and herbal preparations may have contraindications and side effects when used simultaneously with pharmacological drugs. Therefore, you should not make a decision about such treatment on your own.

Consultation with a specialist will help you choose medicinal herbs that will protect the liver and not harm the body.

Herbs with hepatoprotective properties:

  • milk thistle seeds;
  • lupine clover;
  • immortelle;
  • common chicory;
  • elecampane rhizome;
  • Solyanka kholmovaya.

To obtain a healing decoction from herbs or leaves, take 1 teaspoon of plant material and pour 1 glass of boiling water. Wrap up and leave to cool completely. A decoction of roots and seeds should be simmered over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Treatment with herbs during chemotherapy is a long process, so you will have to drink medicinal decoctions for at least 1 month.

Hepatoprotectors to protect the liver

Any drug, one way or another, has a toxic effect on the organs and systems of the body. During treatment, it is important not only to improve your health, but also not to harm the liver and kidneys. This is especially true for aggressive treatment methods - chemotherapy, surgery, long-term treatment with antibiotics. In such cases, it is necessary to take medications to restore and prevent liver diseases.

The attending physician should decide what type of hepatoprotectors to use, based on the diagnosis, test data, and methods of influencing the body.

Currently, the range of choice of hepatoprotectors is wide and available to any patient - from herbal teas and herbal teas to Ursosan, Karsil, Gepabene and others. Therefore, be sure to consult with your doctor and make a decision together!

Copypaste, Author Y. Bombela Iron World.
Stories about a “falling off liver” usually scare newcomers who are considering whether or not to join the world of “chemical” bodybuilding. Experienced “chemists” only smile at such stories, adding to them something like “yes, yes, and then it falls into the toilet.” Meanwhile, the liver is as important an organ as it is vulnerable. And her diseases can very significantly affect our success in bodybuilding. More precisely, simply cross them out. The topic of protecting the liver and normalizing its work is especially relevant now, after numerous winter holidays with copious libations and no less copious consumption of far from the healthiest foods. But all this is also burdened by a deficiency of vitamins in our diet during the winter. Our liver has worked very hard under adverse conditions to take care of our well-being, and now it is our turn to take care of it.

Https://do4a.net/data/MetaMirrorCache/0bbf2f61df334ad22e1ca38967205995.jpg

Why do we need liver?

“You’re already in my liver!” - we usually say to a person who is “fed up” with something. But the liver was not given to us so that “someone would sit there” all the time - this most important organ performs protective functions in the body. The liver is like a powerful filter that is designed to neutralize poisons formed as a result of metabolic reactions: it converts various toxic compounds, removes and destroys bacteria. But the liver is not only responsible for protecting the body from the invasion of uninvited “agents”. This largest internal organ can rightfully be called the main laboratory of the human body, in which up to 20 million (!) chemical reactions take place per minute. In the liver, the breakdown and synthesis of proteins necessary for our body occurs, here glycogen, which is no less necessary for us, is synthesized and partially accumulated, and fats are digested here. In addition to glycogen, the liver stores many vitamins and iron. The biochemical processes occurring in the liver make it possible to maintain normal human body temperature.

The liver is such an important organ in the body that it is often called the “second heart.” If malfunctions begin in its functioning, the intestines immediately begin to work poorly, sleep is disturbed, nervousness increases, and the functional activity of the adrenal glands decreases. Moreover, even the function of the thyroid gland may be reduced.

Interestingly, attempts to create an artificial liver have so far failed, and are unlikely to ever succeed. Removal of the liver results in death within a maximum of five days. True, this unique organ has a remarkable ability to regenerate - the liver is able to recover even when it is removed by more than 70%. It is clear that without a normally functioning liver it is very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve success in bodybuilding. Due to problems with this organ, you will not be able to eat normally, and nutrition is the basis of success in bodybuilding. Sleep is disturbed - it means that it is impossible to fully recover after a load. Violations in the work of the liver can lead to hypofunction of the thyroid gland, which makes it difficult to lose weight, makes you tired faster. Malfunctions in the liver can lead to a deficiency or excess of estradiol in the blood of men, and both the first and the second are very undesirable phenomena for you and me, directly “hitting” muscle mass.

What causes liver damage?

It would be quite logical to take viral liver lesions, such as viral hepatitis, various kinds of hereditary diseases or diseases of unknown etiology (amyloidosis, hepato-lenticular degeneration, etc.) out of the scope of our current consideration, and focus on diseases that have arisen as a result of prolonged exposure to toxic agents on the liver (including including drugs), metabolic disorders, malnutrition. All liver diseases can be divided into two large groups: hepatitis - inflammatory diseases, and hepatosis - degeneration of liver tissues. The second group includes, in particular, steatosis - a disease in which liver cells suffer from excessive accumulation of fat (it is deposited here instead of glycogen), and cirrhosis - an overgrowth of scar tissue that changes the structure of the liver and worsens its blood supply.

https://do4a.net/data/MetaMirrorCache/749b8aff628bd32503bbaa2c3df7b80e.jpg

With good reason, it can be argued that the first place among the agents that have a negative effect on the liver is occupied by alcohol. Alcoholic liver disease is also classified separately. As a result of prolonged excessive consumption of strong drinks (however, by our standards, not so immoderate - only 40 g of pure alcohol daily), various liver diseases develop - from fatty degeneration (steatosis) to hepatitis and cirrhosis.
But alcohol, which the liver is designed to neutralize at the cost of its well-being, is far from all. Banal medications pose quite a big danger to the “second heart”. Yes, yes, completely banal - paracetamol, for example. Aspirin is slightly less dangerous. There is no need to talk about antibiotics - they “hit” the liver with the force of a heavyweight boxer. Not all, but very many. The same applies to anti-tuberculosis drugs, sleeping pills phenobarbital, nicotinic acid and some other drugs. So androgens and anabolic steroids, to which we are accustomed to attribute a unique property of negatively affecting the liver, are far from alone in this regard in the world of drugs. Another cause of liver damage is toxins that enter our body both with food and from the air: “bad ecology” is not just words. However, that's not all. It turns out that… heavy weight training can have a detrimental effect on the liver. And “not in the best way” is putting it mildly...

"Stroev's liver"

Symptoms of liver damage

The main symptoms that something is wrong with the liver are:
A feeling of heaviness (pain) in the right hypochondrium, which indicates an enlarged liver. The liver itself cannot hurt, but as it increases in volume, it stretches the superficial connective tissue membrane. The nerve endings of the stretched capsule give a periodically occurring feeling of pressure, and then pain. The pain usually intensifies when walking, physical activity, eating fried or spicy foods; may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and heartburn.
Skin itching. The eyeball (sclera), and then the skin, may acquire a yellowish tint, and characteristic “spider veins” may appear.
Weakness, lethargy, fatigue, decreased performance. Sleep disturbances, memory problems, and a feeling of general apathy may appear.
Changes in the color of stool (may become discolored or black) and urine (becomes dark in color - from dark yellow to dark brown).
Swelling in the legs and ascites (dropsy). But these symptoms, as well as hormonal changes, are characteristic of severe stages of liver disease.
But even if you don’t have any of the listed symptoms, you shouldn’t relax - the problem is that the liver is an extremely “patient” organ and begins to make itself felt only when the problems become more or less serious. So, even if you don’t have any pain, it’s clearly not a bad idea to think about the health of your liver, especially after a difficult “course” that included, among other things, oral AAS.

A little more about AAS

[Dead link to picture]:http://images03.olx.ru/ui/8/61/07/1283286119_116885407_1-----1283286119.jpg

Not all drugs belonging to the group of androgens and anabolic steroids have a negative effect on the liver. Almost all injectable AAS hardly affect the liver, even in very high dosages. Toxic to the liver - to a greater or lesser extent - are only oral drugs and the stanozolol suspension, which, in fact, is a complete analogue of the oral form of this drug. Why are these drugs toxic to the liver? It's all about the methyl group, which is located in the seventeenth position of most of the oral AAS (in methenolone and mesterolone this group is in the first position) and which is designed to protect these drugs from destruction. To be more precise, it is not the methyl group itself that is to blame, but a very strong bond that is not susceptible to the action of liver enzymes on the first pass through this organ. The liver has to “strain” much more in order to destroy this connection. In the short term, this is not so significant, but no one takes androgens and anabolic steroids in “cycles” of one week, and few take “cycles” of 2-3 weeks. There is a lot of talk about the connection between taking AAS and liver tumors, including malignant ones. In fact, there is no particular connection. According to one of the largest studies, which examined cases of liver disease such as angiosarcoma, which occurred from 1964 to 1974, only 4 out of 131 cases (3.1%) could be said to be abused by AAS. And androgens could only be called the cause of diseases with a big stretch - these drugs were taken by people with existing liver pathologies. The same can be said about hepatitis - inflammation of the liver. Another study, conducted in 1999, compared blood counts in three groups of subjects. The first consisted of 15 bodybuilders who were on a “course” using oral AAS, the second - 10 of their “natural” colleagues, the third - 49 people with viral hepatitis. The control group consisted of 592 students. Representatives of both the first and second groups demonstrated elevated levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and creatine kinase (see Liver Function Indicators), but the level of gamma-glutamine transferase was within the normal range. In patients with hepatitis from the third group, an excess was recorded in all four indicators. In the control group, only the level of creatine kinase was increased (that is, there were no abnormalities in liver function). Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that abnormalities in the liver in hard-training bodybuilders do not depend on the use of anabolic steroids and do not indicate the presence of inflammatory processes in the liver (hepatitis).

Rumor has endowed such a drug as oxymetholone ("Anadrol", "Androlik", "Anapolon") with especially terrible characteristics in relation to the liver. However, as has already been said more than once, oxymetholone is a fairly “mild” drug that affects the liver quite weakly. Methandrostenolone, methyltestosterone, stanozolol and, especially, fluoxymesterone have a much more pronounced effect on the liver. And drugs such as methyltrienolone (oral trenbolone) or mibolerone (Checky Drops) were even discontinued due to their increased hepatotoxicity. And yet I repeat once again: anabolic steroids are no more toxic to the liver than the same antibiotics. Even less, to be honest. But taken over a long period of time in conjunction with weight training, and even quite heavy, they can already be dangerous. This means that there is a direct reason for us to turn to the drugs that are designed to protect the liver - hepatoprotectors, because these drugs are prescribed for mandatory use along with antibiotics. But first let's look at

Impaired liver function may be indicated by elevated values of the following indicators.

Indicator Norm, women Norm, men
Total bilirubin 3.4-17.1 µmol/l
Alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) up to 31 U/l up to 41 U/l
Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) up to 31 U/l up to 41 U/l
Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (Gamma-GT) up to 32 U/l up to 49 U/l

An increased level of total bilirubin may indicate damage to liver cells or obstruction of the bile ducts. High levels of bilirubin can appear with long-term adherence to a low-calorie diet.

Elevated levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase may indicate liver cell damage or drug toxicity to the liver.

Elevated levels of gamma-glutamine transferase may indicate liver disease in general (hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer).

Hepatoprotectors

The group of hepatoprotectors - pharmacological drugs designed to protect the liver and restore its normal functioning - includes quite a lot of drugs, often very different in their effects. Hepatoprotectors, by the way, are among the best-selling drugs, but despite this, people continue to suffer from liver diseases. Among all hepatoprotectors, the following types can be distinguished.

Preparations based on essential phospholipids

Every liver disease is accompanied by damage to the liver membranes (membranes). Therefore, restoration of membrane integrity can be called the main prerequisite for recovery. Cell membranes are two rows of phospholipid molecules, “permeated” with protein molecules of enzymes. With various liver injuries, phospholipid molecules are replaced by cholesterol, which makes the cell membrane hard, inflexible and poorly permeable to substances. The cell becomes blocked and may die.

The first drug that made it possible to restore the integrity of liver membranes was Essentiale. Until now, this drug is considered one of the best, due to its high efficiency, excellent tolerability and virtual absence of side effects.

Preparations based on milk thistle flavonoids

Flavonoids are useful natural substances that not only protect and restore the liver, but also fight cardiovascular diseases and cancer. This group includes drugs such as “Karsil”, “Silibor”, “Legalon”, “Gepabene”. All of them contain milk thistle extract, the main component of which is silymarin, and help treat fatty liver, cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, toxic-metabolic liver damage, including xenobiotics. The main effects of silymarin are membrane protective, antioxidant and metabolic. According to the observations of doctors, in patients with chronic viral hepatitis after a month's course of treatment with Silibor, biochemical blood parameters are normalized, health improves, weight gain is expected, the size of the liver decreases, the yellowness of the skin disappears, and pain in the right hypochondrium disappears.

Typically, drugs based on silymarin are prescribed with caution for cholestasis, since there is evidence that cholestasis may increase under its influence. The duration of the course should not exceed four weeks, after which, if necessary, continue treatment, it is advisable to change the drug, for example, prescribe a drug based on essential phospholipids.

Preparations based on flavonoids from other plants

"Liv-52" contains a number of medicinal plants widely used in Indian folk medicine. It is believed that Liv-52 protects the liver parenchyma from toxic agents. Acts as a therapeutic or prophylactic agent. Strengthens intracellular metabolism and stimulates regeneration. There is evidence that the use of the drug "Liv-52" in acute liver pathology can aggravate the inflammatory process. Because of this, the drug is usually recommended only when the severity of the inflammatory process in the liver is minimal and the phenomena of synthetic failure predominate. "Hofitol" is a preparation containing purified extract of artichoke leaves. Its hepatoprotective and choleretic effect is due to the presence of the phenolic compound cynarin in the extract in combination with phenolic acids. In addition to them, the drug contains carotene, vitamins C, B1, B2, and inulin. "Hofitol" affects the functional activity of liver cells, stimulates the production of enzymes, this explains the effect of the drug on fat metabolism, as well as increasing the antitoxic function of the liver. "Hofitol" reduces the level of cholesterol in the blood during initial hypercholesterolemia, has a choleretic effect due to a moderate choleretic and weak cholekinetic effect. Used for toxic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. The drug is low toxic. "Pumpkin" is a complex of biologically active substances obtained from pumpkin seeds. The hepatoprotective effect of the drug is determined by its membrane-stabilizing properties and manifests itself in slowing down the development of damage to hepatocyte membranes and accelerating their recovery. In addition, "Tykveol" reduces inflammation, slows down the development of connective tissue and accelerates the regeneration of damaged liver parenchyma. The drug has a choleretic effect, normalizes the chemical composition of bile, reduces the risk of developing cholelithiasis and has a beneficial effect on its course. However, it should be noted that convincing evidence of the high efficiency of "Tykveol" has not yet been received. The drug is used for chronic liver diseases of various etiologies: chronic liver damage (hepatitis, cirrhosis), cholecystocholangitis and biliary dyskinesia, for the prevention of cholelithiasis.

Organic preparations of animal origin

"Hepatosan" is a drug based on freeze-drying of liver cells from donor animals. The mechanism of action of the drug has two phases: intestinal, in which the drug has a detoxifying effect due to the sorption of toxic products in the intestine, and metabolic (hepatoprotective), during which hepatocytes are destroyed, and their degradation products are absorbed and act as protectors at the level of liver cells, restoring the functional activity of hepatocytes. "Hepatosan" is able to limit the effects of cytolysis, enhance the protein-synthetic ability of the liver and is used in the complex treatment of liver cirrhosis.

Preparations of different groups

"Heptral" (ademeteonin). Ademetionine is a biological substance found in all tissues and body fluids. In order not to delve into the biochemical jungle, I will only say that ademeteonin molecules are included in many biochemical reactions. "Heptral" has a detoxifying, regenerating, antioxidant, antifibrosing and neuroprotective effect. "Heptral" is used for intrahepatic cholestasis - toxic, viral and medicinal, as well as for cirrhosis. In addition, the drug is also an antidepressant, so it can be used for depression, as well as in the case of withdrawal symptoms. According to experts, "Heptral" is one of the best - the fastest acting - hepatorotectors, but this only applies to the injection form of the drug. Minus - high price.

"Hepa-merz" (ornithine). More precisely, the active ingredient of the drug is L-ornithine-L-aspartate. "Hepa-merz" is a relatively new hepatoprotector, although ornithine has been used in bodybuilding practice for quite a long time. Ornithine aspartate enhances the metabolism of ammonia, both in the liver and in the brain, it helps to normalize the general condition of the body, stimulates the production of insulin and growth hormone (albeit very slightly). The drug is used for fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, for liver damage as a result of alcoholism and drug addiction, for the treatment of brain disorders resulting from impaired liver activity.

Not only hepatoprotectors

But hepatoprotectors are only one group of drugs whose purpose is to fight liver damage. Others are no less important, namely:

B vitamins, microelements (zinc, selenium, magnesium), adaptogens Detoxification agents (sorbents, antidotes)

Choleretic agents

Immunomodulators

Anti-inflammatory drugs

Antioxidants (including vitamins A, C, E).

Drugs from each of the listed groups perform their functions in saving the liver. And now is the time to draw up a comprehensive

rescue plan
https://do4a.net/data/MetaMirrorCache/591f27966832c2551ef0bbbcdd21786a.jpg

It is worth starting work to save the liver by ridding the body of waste and toxins. Sorbents such as activated carbon or the drug "Polyphepan" are suitable for this purpose, but it is much better to use new generation sorbents, such as "Enterosgel" or "Rekitsen-RD". You can, of course, use Hepatosan, trying to kill two birds with one stone, but, in my opinion, it would be somewhat more reasonable to separate the processes of detoxification and liver protection. Applied in those dosages that are recommended in the instructions attached to each of the drugs, and "Enterosgel" and "Rekitsen" do not damage the intestinal microflora, focusing solely on pathogenic bacteria and toxins. But you can use them in dosages one and a half to two times higher than recommended. In this case, the cleaning will go faster and more efficiently, but the microflora will have to be restored with drugs such as Khilak, Bifi-form, Bifikol or the like. However, drinking this kind of probiotics is not harmful in any case. Let's move on. If the situation is serious, or you want to achieve a positive effect quickly, use Heptral in injectable form. Then you can move on to taking drugs based on essential phospholipids. But my personal choice is "Hofitol": it not only restores the functional activity of liver cells and stimulates the production of enzymes, but also has a choleretic effect, normalizes the ratio of levels of "bad" and "good" cholesterol in the blood, and has a beneficial effect on the kidneys.

In the future, it is necessary to take a vitamin-mineral complex, paying special attention to the content of B vitamins in it, as well as microelements such as zinc, magnesium, and selenium. It is also worth taking antioxidants. And during periods of heavy training, do not forget about immunomodulators.

Is it possible or not to use hepatoprotectors during a “course” of oral AAS, and if so, which ones? We often hear that the cause of pain in the right hypochondrium is intrahepatic cholestasis, that is, a violation of the synthesis, secretion and outflow of bile. But this is not so, pain is mainly characteristic of fatty liver degeneration or acute hepatitis, it is not necessarily evidence of cholestasis. And you shouldn’t refuse to use silymarin-based drugs just because you feel pain. In any case, Heptral is a very effective drug for the treatment of cholestasis, so if you start with it, you do not risk anything. You can also use the same “Hofitol” or “Tykveol”. And try to take ornithine without fail. As a preventive procedure for washing the bile ducts, you can also use “blind” probing (tubage). Although this method can be called "old-fashioned", it works quite well and can be used weekly. The procedure is carried out as follows: magnesia powder, usually a dessert or tablespoon, is diluted in a glass of hot water in the evening and left until the morning. This solution is drunk in the morning on an empty stomach. Sorbitol or xylitol can be used as a replacement for magnesium. You can also prepare an infusion of choleretic herbs. After taking the solution or infusion, you need to lie down in bed for an hour and a half, placing a heating pad under your right side on the liver area. An indicator of the effectiveness of the procedure is the green color of the stool (the stool should not be liquid). Finally, the last question, “What about dietary supplements?” The use of dietary supplements in the treatment of the liver is an interesting topic, but it is too broad, and today we will not consider it in detail. Let me just say that some experts even give preference to dietary supplements over medications, citing the fact that the former contain a much larger amount of useful substances, which are often “overboard” in the production of drugs. In some cases this is true, but do not forget that:

Dietary supplements are, however, not medicines, and their quality in most cases is not particularly carefully controlled;

Often one can only guess about the purpose of most of the components included in dietary supplements and their side effects;

Medicines are intended to treat diseases, while dietary supplements are best used as preventive supplements.

That's probably all. Don't forget to take care of your liver, and it will serve you faithfully for many years.

It turns out that such an important organ can be affected not only by viruses and bacteria, but also by medications that a person takes in large quantities throughout his life.

Since all blood passes through the liver, drugs are destroyed here. Antibiotics, drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis, and antitumor pills have a negative effect on hepatocytes. Those who often take painkillers, as well as women who take birth control pills, should take care of protecting liver cells.

How can you treat your liver?

To restore the function of liver cells, doctors prescribe hepatoprotectors. These include medicines based on plant components, essential phospholipids, and amino acids. The specialist prescribes them to the patient according to individual indications, immediately after drug therapy or together with it.

Of the plant components, milk thistle significantly supports and restores the liver. An excellent drug from this group is “Karsil”, which protects hepatocytes from the effects of long-term drug use. It must be taken in a course that lasts about 3 months. “Silymarin” and “Silimar” also contain milk thistle extract, and also restore damaged liver cell membranes and promote new growth.

Essential phospholipids form the basis of the liver cell membrane, so drugs based on these substances contribute to the restoration of hepatocytes and improve their condition. And most importantly, they prevent the growth of connective tissue in the liver. A very popular and high-quality drug is “Essentiale Forte”, which contains such essential phospholipids in its composition.

Amino acid derivatives also prevent the development of medicinal hepatitis, these include the drugs “Heptor” and “Heptral”. They have a detoxifying effect, promote liver cell regeneration, and are antioxidants. The big advantage is that you only need to take amino acid derivatives for 2-4 weeks, depending on the initial condition of the liver.

Every patient should understand that they should not self-medicate. In any case, before starting to use hepatoprotectors, you must consult with your doctor, who will select the optimal drug, indicate the timing of administration and dosage.

  • fibrosis and fatty degeneration of hepatocytes;
  • disturbances in the vessels supplying the liver;
  • acute toxic hepatitis;
  • tubular cholestasis;
  • sclerosing cholangitis.

  • milk thistle seeds;
  • lupine clover;
  • immortelle;
  • common chicory;
  • elecampane rhizome;

How do antibiotics affect the liver?

Most antibiotics have a hepatotoxic effect. Organ intoxication can occur in two ways: direct or indirect.

Direct hepatotoxic action occurs due to the breakdown (metabolism) of the active substance of the antibiotic. Often metabolites of antibacterial drugs accumulate for a long time in the liver, gradually destroying hepatocyte cells. However, an indirect mechanism is also possible.

As a result of the "processing" of the active substances of the drugs, an immune reaction is initiated: the body's defense system takes the metabolites in the liver for dangerous violators. The body sends millions of leukocytes to the site of the imaginary lesion, which destroy the liver cells.

Which antibiotics are the most dangerous?

  • tetracycline and its varieties;
  • penicillins;
  • ketolides;
  • macrolides (relatively harmless, since their hepatotoxic potential is considered one of the most insignificant);
  • antibiotics of the aminoglycoside group;
  • fluoroquinolones;
  • linoxamides;
  • nitrofurans.

Some of the drugs are dangerous even with a single dose, because their hepatotoxic potential is great. Others accumulate in the liver and the higher the concentration, the stronger the symptoms of diseases caused by taking the drugs.

Does this mean that you should not take antibiotics to protect your liver? No. But it is important to discuss the state of your own health with your doctor and decide together which antibiotics should be taken so that the therapeutic effect is maximum and the harm to health is minimal.

Consequences of taking antibiotics

Antibiotics are extremely harmful to the liver, therefore, as a rule, they are prescribed in short courses. But even a short course can “hit” the organ. Fortunately, in most cases, liver-related complications do not occur. But with long-term use of antibacterial agents, the following diseases may develop:
  • toxic (drug-induced) hepatitis;
  • fatty liver hepatosis;
  • cirrhosis of the liver.

To restore the organ after taking medications, you should not self-medicate, it is better to consult a doctor.

Diagnostics

Before you begin to treat and restore the organ, it is necessary to undergo a thorough diagnosis by a gastroenterologist (even better, by a hepatologist). This is the only way to prescribe the correct therapeutic course. Diagnostics includes a number of instrumental and laboratory studies. Among them:

  • Ultrasound of the liver and abdominal organs;
  • scintigraphy (radioisotope study);
  • biochemical blood test (indicators of ALT, AST, bilirubin are especially important).

Taken together, three studies are enough to determine the extent of organ damage and begin treatment and restoration of the liver after antibiotics.

Treatment

Liver treatment is carried out in several ways: through medication, diet, and traditional methods.

The first stage is taking specialized medications designed to protect the liver. Such drugs are called hepatoprotectors. From the very first days of taking antibacterial drugs, you should follow a diet. This is the primary recovery method. In addition, some folk remedies have proven themselves well.

Drug treatment

This method of treatment involves the use of specialized drugs with a protective function. Among them:

Self-administration of the described drugs should be excluded. Prescriptions are determined only by a doctor and only during an in-person examination. In addition, the specialist is obliged to focus on the results of diagnostic measures.

Diet

Cleansing your liver involves changing your diet. If the liver hurts after taking antibiotics, you need to eat the following foods:

When cooking, preference should be given to cooking or steaming. This way you can retain the maximum amount of nutrients.

To restore the liver, the diet described is best suited.

Folk remedies

There are many effective recipes to cleanse the liver.

Onions with sugar. In a container, mix a kilogram of onion and 500 grams of sugar (about two glasses). Caramelize onions with sugar in the oven. The criterion for readiness is that the onion should acquire a pleasant golden color and completely caramelize with the release of syrup. Cool, then transfer the resulting mixture to a clean container. Use the product one tablespoon once a day, half an hour before meals. Duration of treatment is 7-14 days. Store in the refrigerator for no more than a month.

Rose hip. Take half a glass of rose hips and fill with water to the brim. Leave for 3 hours, then consume in three doses (distribute throughout the day: morning, lunch and evening before bed). Duration of treatment - 7 days. The product must be prepared anew every day, since it should not be stored for long.

Herbal decoction. Mix a teaspoon each of chicory (flowers), corn (stigma) and milk thistle. Pour the resulting mixture with a glass of hot water. Leave for 12 hours (all night). Strain and consume a tablespoon in the morning, on an empty stomach. Duration of treatment is three weeks (21 days). The decoction should be stored in a dark and well-ventilated place. The product does not deteriorate, so it can be stored in such conditions for a long time (up to 2 months).

Herbal decoction (2 option). Mix crushed St. John's wort, calendula flowers and chicory (any part of the plant). One teaspoon of each type of raw material. Pour the mixture with a glass of boiling water (250 ml), cover the container with a lid and let the product brew overnight (12 hours). In the morning, the product should be boiled and drunk in three doses per day. Repeat the same thing for a week. Can be stored in a dark place for 2-3 days.

Cranberry with honey. Mix cranberries and honey in equal proportions (a teaspoon of berries to a teaspoon of honey). Take a tablespoon half an hour before meals. Duration of treatment is 5-7 days. For better absorption, it is recommended to wipe or mash the berries with a spoon. The product can be poured with warm water and consumed as tea. Store in the refrigerator for no more than 3 days.

Chicory. Brew half a kilogram of chicory (any part of the plant will do). It is necessary to fill with boiling water. Cover the container with a lid and let the product “simmer” for 15 minutes. Drink as regular tea for a month. The product is intended for long-term storage (up to a month). Keep in the refrigerator.

Taken together, these methods are sufficient to restore the liver.

Prevention measures

It is important to keep in mind that if you have had liver disease before, antibiotics should be taken with caution. It is advisable to stop taking these medications, however, if this is not possible, it is necessary to minimize the negative effects. From the very first days, it is recommended to take hepatoprotectors, as well as follow a gentle diet. This way the liver will be minimally loaded.

Antibiotics have a significant effect on the liver. However, fortunately, modern methods of therapy can reduce the effects of the harmful effects of these drugs and cure the organ.

So what happens to our liver during the holiday feast? To digest fatty heavy foods you need a sufficient amount of bile. If there is a lot of such food, the liver cannot produce it in the required volume. Alcohol is added to this “killer” heavy, as doctors say, “food bolus”. About 95% of all incoming alcohol is destroyed in the liver, and all its breakdown products are toxic not only to this organ, but also to the brain, as well as to the entire body. When consuming a small amount of alcohol, the liver easily copes with its utilization, but if the amount is increased, not only the alcohol itself accumulates in the liver, but also its breakdown products, damaging the walls of liver cells. And without walls, a cell cannot function normally.

So if on the third day of indefatigable drinking and eating you feel pain or heaviness in the right hypochondrium, an increase in temperature, a bitter taste in the mouth, know: your liver is asking for mercy. To prevent this from happening, you need to take care of her. For example, take hepatoprotectors. Doctors advise taking hepatoprotectors while taking medications that are destroyed in the liver. These include antibiotics, anti-tuberculosis drugs, oral contraceptives, antitumor drugs, painkillers.

The basic requirements for hepatoprotectors were formulated back in 1970, but the ideal medicine has not yet been created. And many drugs have been created, there is plenty to choose from - herbal remedies, amino acid derivatives, phospholipids, and dietary supplements. Hepatoprotectors should be taken in a course during exposure to an unfavorable factor. Of course, you can drink them once during a feast; it won’t do any harm, but it won’t do any good either. It is also possible to take the drug when symptoms of illness appear, and most often it is even necessary if you did not use it on time, but in a course. The duration of the course of treatment is determined by the doctor.

Herbal preparations

One of the most popular herbs for protecting the liver is milk thistle (thistle). Its healing properties were known 2000 years ago. It was used to treat the liver by the Greeks, Romans, and Indians. The main active ingredient in milk thistle is silymarin. It is this that not only prevents the destruction of cell membranes, but also stimulates the growth of new liver cells.

Milk thistle preparations are used for toxic and medicinal liver damage, hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver, cholecystitis, cholangitis, cholelithiasis.

To prevent liver diseases, milk thistle preparations are taken during periods of increased load on the liver (taking antibiotics, long holidays, binge drinking). They need to be taken two tablets three times a day. There are a lot of drugs containing silymarin: “Karsil”, “Legalon”, “Silymarin”, “Silibinin”, “Silimar” » ... In addition, pharmacies offer many dietary supplements from milk thistle: meal (crushed plant), oil, capsules.

Some growers believe that milk thistle alone is not enough. For example, the drug "Gepabene", in addition to silymarin, also contains an extract of fumaria, which has a choleretic and antispasmodic effect, facilitating the flow of bile into the intestines.

Another plant widely used to treat the liver is the artichoke. This drug has been used in medicine since before our era; in Russia it has been known since the 18th century as a remedy that can not only cure jaundice, but also eliminate joint pain, and in the 20th century, scientists confirmed that artichoke has hepatoprotective and choleretic effects. In addition, it improves intestinal function, normalizes metabolism, reduces cholesterol levels in the blood, has a diuretic effect and thereby relieves swelling. The main active ingredient of artichoke - cymarin - is similar in properties to silibinin. Artichoke preparations - “Hofitol”, “Artichoke extract”, “Bitter Artichoke” drink. They are used to treat cholecystitis, alcohol intoxication, hepatitis, and atherosclerosis.

Artichoke has a diuretic effect and, thanks to it, relieves swelling. Therefore, it can be used during the long New Year holidays not only to prevent liver diseases, but also to get rid of morning swelling.

The drug "Liv 52" does not contain milk thistle. But it contains extracts of prickly capers, nightshade, chicory, tamarisk, yarrow, cassia and other plants. The drug stimulates the restoration of liver cells, has a choleretic effect, improves digestion, and protects the liver from harmful effects, including alcohol. It is used for acute and chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, anorexia, but doctors also prescribe it for the prevention of liver diseases when taking various medications.

The complex of biologically active substances of plant origin, which is part of the drug "Dipana", stimulates the regeneration of liver cells, improves digestion and protects the liver from toxic damage. In addition, the drug activates the liver and has immunomodulatory activity. It is prescribed for hepatitis of various origins, liver cirrhosis, and fatty degeneration. And also for prevention of long-term adverse effects on the liver (taking medications, drinking alcohol).

Preparations of animal origin

There are few drugs of animal origin. They are produced from cattle liver hydrolysate (Sirepar) or from pig liver cells (Hepatosan). These medications have a detoxifying and hepatoprotective effect and restore the functional activity of the liver. Used for liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, liver failure, and alcoholic liver damage. The drugs are prescription drugs and are not usually used for prevention.

Essential phospholipids

The next group of drugs includes essential phospholipids - components of the cell wall of hepatocytes. Actually, these are also herbal preparations - phospholipids are obtained from soybeans. But their principle of action is not the same as that of silymarin and cymarin. Essential phospholipids are integrated into the lipid layer of damaged cell membranes, thereby restoring cell function. As a result, enzyme activity increases (the liver can break down harmful substances more efficiently), the energy costs of the organ are reduced, because with a whole cell wall the cell works more efficiently, and even the physicochemical properties of bile, which, in turn, improves the process of digesting food. In addition, the composition of drugs in this group includes vitamins. This group includes the drugs “Essentiale N forte”, “Essliver”, “Phosphogliv”.

Many people believe that drugs in this group restore liver cells. This is not true; essential phospholipids only restore cell walls. And vitamins, which are also contained in these preparations, help improve cell function.

Amino acids

Amino acids play an important role in liver function. For example, ademetionine (“Heptral” and “Heptor”) is involved in the synthesis of phospholipids and various biologically active substances, and has detoxifying and regenerating properties. It breaks down fats and removes them from the liver. In addition, it has an antidepressant effect that begins to appear around the end of the first week of use. It is used for toxic liver damage, fatty degeneration, chronic hepatitis, withdrawal syndrome and depression.

Ornithine (“Hepa-Merz”) reduces elevated levels of ammonia and is used for fatty liver disease, toxic lesions, and also for the treatment of brain disorders caused by liver dysfunction. These drugs are also effective for the prevention of liver diseases, the course is 2-4 weeks, but, as a rule, they are not used for preventive purposes - they are too expensive.

Plus the fight against cholesterol

"Ursosan", "Ursofalk" - preparations of ursodeoxycholic acid, also restore hepatocyte membranes. In addition, they bind cholesterol, which helps dissolve cholesterol stones in the liver. They are prescribed for primary biliary cirrhosis, chronic and acute viral hepatitis, toxic liver damage, and biliary dyskinesia. They can also be used for prophylaxis when taking hepatotoxic drugs or alcohol. The duration of the course is determined by the doctor.

It's not just the liver that suffers

A holiday dinner, especially one that lasts throughout the holidays, is harmful not only to the liver. The entire gastrointestinal tract suffers from it. In order to facilitate its work, you can take a tablet or two of pancreatic enzymes before dinner (Mezim, Panzinorm, Pancreatin) and, for example, a choleretic agent (Allochol, Cholenzym, Tanacechol, Holosas "). Only you will have to take the pills for several days, depending on the condition of your body, the quality and quantity of food. Enzymes should be taken with water. Otherwise, the protective shell will dissolve, and the acidic environment of the stomach will destroy them, and they will no longer be able to help the digestion process.

Before taking the drug, be sure to consult your doctor.

01 Why is liver support needed?

How to protect the liver under high load associated with taking antibacterial drugs? What can you do while at home? In this text material we will try to answer the question of how to support the liver when taking medications and protect it from alcohol.

Life in modern conditions is difficult. After all, we are constantly faced with stressful situations, poor-quality food, don’t move enough, and many have bad habits.

Medicines used in modern medicine have a strong influence on humans. Currently, many diseases have been defeated, drugs have been developed that provide adequate treatment and have an analgesic effect.

But the chemical components they contain can harm the body. The liver has a direct influence on the metabolic processes caused by taking medications.
Some of these drugs are hypotoxic and can damage healthy liver tissue. In particular, these include antibacterial drugs, agents used in chemotherapy, and hormones. Alcohol abuse also severely damages the liver due to the aggressive effects of ethanol on the organ.

Initially, toxins have a negative effect on the gastrointestinal tract. In this case, the main burden associated with the neutralization of chemicals and compounds is borne by the liver.

02 The essence of the issue

How to support the liver on your own without the use of additional medications? You should take note of preventive measures aimed at eliminating existing diseases of the organ.

To create a protective barrier for the liver, you need to:

  1. 1. Eliminate food waste. You should not eat chips, snacks, or crackers, as they contain various additives that contain excess amounts of salt.
  2. 2. Limit alcohol consumption.
  3. 3. Drink plenty of fluids - at least about 2 liters of water per day, excluding coffee, tea, compotes and soups. This helps speed up the process of removing toxins from the body.
  4. 4. Review and adjust your diet. With the normal functioning of the digestive tract, it is enough to follow the principles of a healthy diet: limit yourself to fried, heavy on the esophagus, richly seasoned dishes. You should eat lean meat, a significant amount of vegetables and fruits.
  5. 5. Medicines, including antibacterial drugs, hormones, steroids, anti-inflammatory drugs, should be used only after consultation with a specialist. This makes it possible to reduce the negative impact of medications on the body.
  6. 6. Take medications designed to protect the liver and support it - hepatoprotectors. But even the use of such drugs is possible only with the permission of a doctor.

Antibiotics are indispensable in the fight against infectious diseases, but their use is associated with a number of side effects.

Not all drugs of this pharmacological group have a direct effect on the diseased organ. Most often, after taking antibiotics, you should take a drug designed to restore intestinal microflora.

Antibacterial agents are a powerful force that affects both the infection and the bacteria that benefit our body.

As long as the liver is healthy, it is capable of neutralizing toxic substances and antibacterial drugs.

But if there is a malfunction in the functioning of this organ, the patient develops hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and a number of other diseases. In this case, medications are not completely eliminated, but continue to have a destructive effect on human organs and systems.

03 Taking antibacterial drugs

You should not resort to self-medication. Only a doctor has the right to prescribe antibacterial agents according to the indications and diagnosis.

Together with antibiotics, agents are taken that help normalize the intestinal microflora.

If any liver diseases were previously diagnosed, then the use of hepatoprotectors is recommended during the period of treatment procedures. The choice of drug is based on the doctor’s recommendation.

Of particular importance these days is the issue of ensuring liver protection during the treatment of cancer. Here the pathology is not a joke, and the methods of therapy are harsh, which requires the appointment of correct and reasonable treatment that will not cause harm to an already weakened body.

Oncopathological disease is a serious and dangerous disease. The mortality rate from various types of this pathology is quite high. The success of treatment largely depends on the type of cancer pathology, the presence of metastases, complications, and concomitant diseases. To carry out treatment procedures aimed at combating cancer, we use a number of techniques: surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Drugs used to treat cancer are very aggressive for the liver. When chemotherapy is used, tumor cells die, but this process has side effects and can cause damage not only to the liver, but also to the kidneys.

04 Prescribed medications

During chemotherapy, long-term use of antibiotics, as well as alcohol abuse, liver protection is provided by hepatoprotectors. Among these drugs it is worth noting:

  • Ursosan;
  • Karsil;
  • Essentiale;
  • Gepabene;
  • Osalmid;
  • Result Pro;
  • Ursofalk;
  • Liv 52;
  • Heptral;
  • Fandetox;
  • Ovesol.

In addition to hepatoprotectors, during treatment with aggressive medications, you can support the liver with medicinal herbs. Since herbal medicines have some contraindications, they must be prescribed by a doctor.

Here are medicinal herbs that have hepatoprotective properties:

  • immortelle flowers;
  • milk thistle;
  • clover;
  • chicory;
  • hill solyanka;
  • roots and stems of elecampane.

To prepare the decoction, take 1 tsp. dry collection of herbs and pour a glass of boiling water. The solution should sit for 40 minutes. The roots and stems of the plants should be filled with 200 g of water and boiled in a water bath. The decoction is consumed for 30 days.

Every year, science becomes aware of more and more varieties of viruses, bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that can cause diseases in people. Therefore, scientists invent new and new drugs. Almost every pill has a number of side effects. Essentially, the medications your doctor prescribes treat one thing at the expense of another. Especially when taking medications, the liver suffers, taking on the destructive effects of chemicals contained in medicinal powders and pills.

We treat one thing, we cripple another.

Almost all drugs pass through the biological filter of the liver. In the treatment of bacterial complications of ARVI and influenza, antimicrobial agents are prescribed, and to eliminate signs of intoxication from the very beginning of the development of acute respiratory viral infections, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs are used. However, most of these drugs can seriously damage liver cells. It is not necessary to take medications constantly or for a long time. For significant liver damage, a short therapeutic or prophylactic course is sufficient.

Signs of liver damage

Toxic liver damage can manifest itself as symptoms such as heaviness in the right hypochondrium, discomfort, nausea, vomiting, increased gas formation, bowel problems (diarrhea or constipation). But sometimes liver damage can be asymptomatic. Only during a random or routine medical examination, or already at a later stage of the disease, when more striking signs occur, can damage to the liver cells be detected. This is why people who are being treated with antibiotics or taking other medications that can negatively affect liver health need to take special medications.

What drugs protect the liver?

There are hepatoprotectors that were developed specifically to support and regenerate the liver, as well as to strengthen cell membranes in order to prevent the possibility of harmful substances invading liver cells. Experts may recommend hepatoprotectors with extracts of medicinal plants to protect the liver. These include the original drug ® based on milk thistle. The silibinin it contains has an anti-inflammatory effect, restores damaged liver cells and reduces the harmful effects of toxic substances, including components of antibiotics and other drugs. In addition, the drug has high bioavailability, significantly enhancing its ability to be quickly absorbed and delivered to the affected areas.

It is important to remember that new varieties and strains of harmful microbes appear very often, and such cases take humanity by surprise, often causing epidemics that affect most countries of the world. In addition, “old” bacteria and viruses become “insensitive” to drugs or treatment regimens over time. But every new treatment method or new drug has its downside - side effects with toxic effects on the liver. Therefore, it is so important to neutralize hazardous substances before they lead to the destruction of the main filter of the human body.
