Included in the collected works for the first time: St. 1856 (under the title: “In Memory of a Friend”). It was reprinted (under the same title) in the 1st part of all subsequent lifetime editions of Poems.

In St. 1879 it is dated: “1853” (obviously, at the author’s direction), and in the R. book (at his own direction) - “1851”.
The title “In Memory of Belinsky” in the Russian library undoubtedly belonged to the poet himself. The authority of this publication is confirmed by the fact that an amendment was made to Art. 16. The corrected reading “restrained tribe” is also found in Art. 1879; in the text of this edition the title “In Memory of a Friend” was retained, but the indexes also included the titles “In Memory of Belinsky” (vol. IV, p. CXCIX) and “Belinsky” (vol. IV, p. CCI).
The poem is dedicated to the memory of V. G. Belinsky (who died on May 26, 1848). It was written at a time when the critic’s name was under the strictest censorship ban due to the dissemination of Belinsky’s “seditious” letter to Gogol. In the margins of his book, Nekrasov explained shortly before his death: “It is known that it was impossible to say a word about Belinsky” (St. 1879, vol. IV, p. XXXIV). How great was the fear of possible police repression is evidenced by the following fact: V. P. Botkin (who understood to whom the poem was dedicated) wrote to I. S. Turgenev on March 13, 1855: “Tell Nekrasov thank you for the poem “In Memory of a Friend” They are excellent in all respects,” but immediately (obviously, fearing illustration) he thickly crossed out these words (see: Egorov B. N. A. Nekrasov and V. P. Botkin. - VL, 1964, No. 9, p. 252).
Your grave was lost a long time ago... - Belinsky’s grave at the Volkov cemetery was indeed lost. Wed. in Nekrasov’s poem “V. G. Belinsky”: “The grave is overgrown all around: You won’t find it...”. Only in 1856, using the instructions of Belinsky’s widow, the bibliographer P. A. Efremov found this grave (Report of the RBO, issue 1. St. Petersburg, 1908, pp. 1–2).

Analysis of Nekrasov’s poem “In Memory of Belinsky”

Nekrasov and Belinsky sympathized with each other even before they met personally. Both of them were engaged in critical activities and often agreed in opinions. It happened that Nikolai Alekseevich responded to a work earlier than Vissarion Grigorievich. Without a doubt, Belinsky was impressed by the negative assessments given by the novice critic to the pseudo-historical stories of Zagoskin and Masalsky, the works of now forgotten poets, overflowing with romantic pathos, pleasing to the authorities, but having no artistic value to the works of Bulgarin and Polevoy. The acquaintance of the main person in Russian criticism with the young writer occurred in 1842. Soon Nekrasov and Belinsky became friends. Vissarion Grigorievich had a huge influence on the development of Nikolai Alekseevich as a poet, as well as on the formation of his worldview.

In 1848, the great critic died after a long illness. Nikolai Alekseevich was with him until his last days. The warm relations between the writers were reflected even in painting. Alexey Naumov’s painting “N.A.” is widely known. Nekrasov and I.I. Panaev with patient V.G. Belinsky", written in 1881. The name of Vissarion Grigorievich was banned for a long time. Nikolai Alekseevich is considered one of the first who decided to mention him publicly. First, a poem dedicated to the critic was born. Then Nekrasov published the poem “In Memory of a Friend,” later renamed “In Memory of Belinsky.”

In this work, Nikolai Alekseevich calls his teacher and friend a naive and passionate soul, a person with wonderful thoughts. The poet regrets the too short life of the critic (Vissarion Grigorievich died at thirty-seven years old) and considers his fate sad. According to Nekrasov, the fruits of Belinsky’s hard and dedicated labor will exist on earth for a long time. At the same time, Nikolai Alekseevich believes that descendants will not know about Vissarion Grigorievich. Why does the poet make such disappointing conclusions? Apparently, we are talking about the ban on Belinsky’s work and the mention of his name, which was in force at that time. Nekrasov is also saddened by one more circumstance: his old acquaintances began to forget the criticism. With bitter intonation, Nikolai Alekseevich states at the end of the poem:
