Herbal root for diabetes. Herbs for diabetes. How to prepare herbal teas at home

Medicinal herbs have been used for a long time to treat many diseases, including diabetes. Herbal medicine does not cure diabetes, but it can be an excellent support for your body.

For diabetics, medicinal herbs can be divided into hypoglycemic and other. The antidiabetic (sugar-lowering) effect of plants is due to the presence of insulin-like compounds in them.

Other- include herbs that regulate other metabolic processes, liver, kidney, and circulatory system functions.

Sugar-lowering herbal preparations are recommended for use in type 2 diabetes. Moreover, with mild type 2 diabetes, they can be the only and main medicine (together with diet and physical activity). For moderate insulin-dependent diabetes, you can take herbs along with pills.

In the case of type 1 diabetes, they are useless (only insulin injections).

Other herbs that promote metabolism and are beneficial for blood vessels and the functioning of various organs can be used by patients with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2.

Herbs should be consumed in the form of collections or mixtures of several components, dried herbs and leaves, which are poured with boiling water or serve as the basis for decoctions. Decoctions and infusions for long-term use and during the hot season are best stored in the refrigerator.

Infusions and decoctions of medicinal herbs are usually taken for a long time - approximately 1.5-2 months. Then you need to take a break for at least two weeks (preferably a month). The course of treatment (or prevention of consequences) can be repeated.

It is best to use herbs from a pharmacy or collected by an experienced herbalist. You can collect it yourself, but to do this you need to master collection techniques: know the place, time of collection, methods of drying, storage and preparation.

This hormone is supposed to convert glucose into chemicals needed for the body to function.

One in four diabetics is unaware that they have this disease. The initial stages of this disease do not have any noticeable symptoms, while destructive work occurs in the human body. Undigested glucose has a negative effect on all organs without exception, from the eyeballs to the veins in the legs. In some cases, type 2 diabetes mellitus leads to sudden coma, and already in the intensive care unit the patient finds out about the presence of this disease.

By a disease such as diabetes, experts mean not one, but a number of endocrine diseases that develop as a result of insufficiency of the hormone insulin in the human body - relative or absolute.

Of course, there are drug treatments, but many doctors recommend that diabetics also use medicinal herbs. Which of them are suitable for the treatment of diabetes mellitus? How should they be used correctly? This is what is discussed in this article.

What herbs are called medicinal

Many Russians are familiar with the concept of medicinal herbs. These are not just plants growing in your yard or garden. This group of herbs serves as raw materials for the production of medicines. Either the entire plant can be used, or only part of it: leaves, flowers, roots, etc. Most often they are used to compile recipes for traditional medicine. Today, about five hundred thousand types of medicinal herbs are known, but not all find practical application. Treatment with medicinal herbs is called herbal medicine.

There are several groups of medicinal herbs:

  1. Official (approved for the production of medicinal raw materials, indicated in a special list - the State Register of Medicines of our state).
  2. Pharmacopoeia (from the official group, but the requirements for their quality are specified in the State Pharmacopoeia - a collection of standards and regulations that establish quality standards for all types of plant raw materials).
  3. For traditional medicine (wild plants, many of this group have not undergone official medical testing, but still find their use, especially in situations where official medicine is powerless).

You need to know that a medicinal plant must contain at least one substance that has medicinal properties. Therefore, if you decide to collect them yourself, you should consider which part of the plant (leaves, roots, flowers, etc.) contains the substance needed to treat the disease.

What medicinal herbs can be used for diabetes

For patients with diabetes, herbal medicine cannot be the main method of treatment, but it is well suited for supporting the entire body as a whole. Some medicinal herbs can have a lowering effect on blood glucose levels, and can also affect and improve metabolic processes. In connection with these characteristics, the following classification of medicinal herbs for diabetics has been adopted:

  1. Antihyperglycemic drugs (contain insulin-like substances that can have a regulating effect on blood sugar levels) form the basis of many medications for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  2. Strengthening (contains substances that help the body work smoothly, cleanse it of toxins, and strengthen the immune system).

Herbal medicine itself may not have the desired effect, but in combination with a dietary regimen and certain physical activities it will be an effective and efficient remedy.

Let's look at the main groups of medicinal herbs that can be used to treat diabetes mellitus (type 2):

  1. Sugar-lowering:
    • burdock (root);
    • clover (leaves, flowers);
    • beans (pods);
    • elecampane (roots);
    • blueberries (berries, leaves and young shoots);
    • oats (grains and husks).
  2. General strengthening:
    • Golden root;
    • lure;
    • Eleutherococcus;
    • ginseng.
  3. Regulating metabolism:
    • flax (seeds);
    • plantain (leaves, flowers);
    • linden (flowers);
    • knotweed (leaves, flowers);
    • creeping wheatgrass;
    • bearberry;
    • St. John's wort (leaves, flowers).
  4. Vitamin-containing:
    • rosehip (fruit);
    • lingonberry (leaves);
    • Rowan.

Herbalists also classify some cultivated garden plants as medicinal herbs:

  • red beets (fresh juice);
  • garlic (green and ripe);
  • onions (green and ripe);
  • spinach (leaves);
  • lettuce (leaves);
  • cabbage (leaves);
  • celery (root vegetables);
  • carrots (root vegetables);
  • barley (seeds);
  • oats (seeds).

Most often, the listed plants are used in collections. Ready-made collections of medicinal raw materials from herbs can be purchased in pharmacies.

How to use medicinal herbs for diabetes

There are several ways to use medicinal herbs:

  • infusions (birch buds, hawthorn fruits, nettle leaves);
  • decoctions (rose hips, rowan, black currant leaves);
  • hydroalcoholic tinctures (peony leaves and roots);
  • oil extracts (phytobalm “Sugar-lowering” based on oil extracts of flax seeds, milk thistle, wheat germ);
  • herbs (a combination of some individual plants - blueberry leaf, nettle herb, birch buds, linden blossom, St. John's wort herb and the like);
  • juices from fresh plants (potatoes, red beets, cherries);
  • powder from dried raw materials.

There are several basic rules for using medicinal herbs for diabetes:

  1. Mandatory consultation not only with the attending physician, but also with a practicing herbalist.
  2. Ready-made and processed raw materials from such plants, as well as those that have undergone radiological control, are best purchased at pharmacies or specialized points of sale.
  3. Pay attention to shelf life, time and place of collection of raw materials.
  4. If an allergic reaction or intolerance to this product occurs, you should immediately consult an experienced specialist.
  5. Each type of raw material is prepared in a certain way.
  6. Application should not be too short-term - one or two months, but with mandatory breaks of up to two weeks.

You should always rely on these rules, despite what is written on the Internet and educational literature, since self-medication can lead to undesirable consequences.

Which herbs are suitable specifically for your case when treating diabetes mellitus will only be determined by your attending physician. He will also draw up a regimen for taking a medicinal product based on herbs or raw materials from them. This is necessary because almost each of the herbs mentioned has a number of contraindications, and they must be used with extreme caution so as not to harm yourself. In addition, we must not forget about a special diet, a healthy lifestyle and daily exercise.

Description of the disease

Type 2 or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disease. It is characterized by increased blood sugar levels. The main reason for its development is the deterioration of the interaction of tissue cells with insulin, that is, the pancreatic hormone. The older a person gets, the higher his risk of developing the disease - type 2 diabetes. The disease is quite common. According to statistics, about 20% of all pathologies in elderly people over 65 years of age are due to diabetes mellitus. An amazing fact: in Africa, no one has recorded problems of this kind.

Diet Basics

For diabetes mellitus, experts recommend adhering to certain dietary rules. Firstly, there must be at least 6 meals a day. Six times is the optimal number for normal life support. Secondly, try to exclude easily digestible carbohydrates from your diet. Fiber should take their place. Thirdly, it is necessary to consume as little sugar and salt as possible, as well as vegetable fats. The diet should be based on the principle of the correct ratio of foods: carbohydrates and unsaturated fats per day - 80%, proteins - 20%.

Fighting excess weight

Extra pounds almost always accompany this disease. To feel good, you need to try to get rid of unnecessary weight. Then it will be easier for the body to function. Weight control can be achieved through proper nutrition and regular exercise. It is necessary to exercise regularly because it improves insulin sensitivity. And this is very important for people suffering from diabetes. It is the fact that insulin is not perceived by cells, which is why carbohydrates are not absorbed, that is the main characteristic of this disease.

It is recommended to eat food slowly, chewing it thoroughly. When hunger passes, people with type 2 diabetes should stop immediately. Another important principle is to drink clean, still water. To maintain balance, at least 2 liters are required daily, and other liquids drunk are not taken into account.

You need to accustom yourself to the idea that you will have to maintain a diet for the rest of your days. Thanks to proper nutrition, a person will live much longer. And at the same time there will be no complications. The life of a person with diabetes is already 20-30% shorter than that of a healthy person. Therefore, you should not ignore the basic rules and make it even smaller. Sometimes, about once a month, you need to arrange fasting days, during which the number of calories consumed should not exceed 800 units per day. You can, for example, make apple, cottage cheese or kefir weekends, eat only oatmeal or no more than 400 grams of boiled dietary meat.

Herbal tea for diabetes

Herbal teas can greatly help patients maintain their well-being. An excellent drink for weight loss is anise drink. It helps improve the functioning of the digestive system. At the same time, metabolic processes proceed faster, which helps in the process of losing weight. Mint tea is very useful. It suppresses hunger and regulates appetite.

Even regular green tea will help you lose extra pounds. And thanks to the many vitamins and antioxidants with which it is saturated, your appearance and health will improve. At the same time, it is better to completely avoid certain drinks. These include, for example, sparkling water, store-bought juices, coffee and alcohol.

Permitted and prohibited products

Let's first look at what you can eat if you have diabetes. Recommended products include:

  1. Vegetables. They make a salad with the addition of lemon juice, seasoning it with a small amount of oil. Or baked in its own juice.
  2. Bread and cereals, except rice and millet.
  3. Boiled lean fish and meat.
  4. Fermented milk set.

But the following foods will be very undesirable for type 2 diabetes:

  • sweets, sugar and honey;
  • potatoes and rice;
  • lard and fatty meat, as well as sausages;
  • wheat flour and products made from it;
  • raisins, bananas, grapes, apricots, melon, dried apricots, dates, figs, persimmons.

The last point is due to the fact that the products are very sweet. However, doctors often disagree. For example, there is controversy over whether to eat dates for type 2 diabetes or not. Some are against it, citing the fact that the delicacy consists of 70% sugar. Therefore, it is on a par with bananas, grapes, and so on. But Israeli experts object. They believe that dates are beneficial for type 2 diabetes, especially the fruits of the Majhol variety. But they need to be consumed only in limited quantities.

Table 9 for type 2 diabetes

In Russia and neighboring countries, this diet has become most widespread. It is usually prescribed for mild to moderate illness, if the weight is not excessively high. Table 9 for type 2 diabetes is a balanced diet, in which a maximum of 350 grams of carbohydrates, 100 of proteins and 80 of fats are consumed per day. Of the total amount of lipids, at least one third should be of plant origin.

This diet involves limiting calories, animal fats and unsaturated carbohydrates. Instead, it is recommended to take as much fiber and vitamins as possible. Many foods offered in the diet increase blood sugar. At the same time, metabolism slows down. The most unpleasant thing here is that the inevitable feeling of hunger will sooner or later lead to a breakdown, after which the lost kilograms will return again. Therefore, other, low-carb diets are now being recommended instead of this one.

Signs and symptoms of diabetes

The first and main sign is an increase in blood sugar levels. The disease is chronic and occurs due to insufficient production of the hormone insulin produced in the pancreas.

The disease is divided into 2 types:

  • insulin dependent - type 1;
  • insulin-independent - type 2;

It is immediately worth noting that with type 2 diabetes, the onset of the disease often goes unnoticed due to its gradual development. This is not surprising, because unlike the first type, insulin is still produced in the body, but the body does not perceive it completely.

The first signs of developing type 2 diabetes include:

  • thirsty;
  • the appearance of dry mouth;
  • increased fatigue;
  • general muscle weakness;
  • the appearance of headaches;
  • chilliness;
  • frequent urination;

Less common symptoms include:

  • skin itching;
  • poorly healing wounds;
  • numbness and tingling in the arms and legs;
  • weight gain;

Diagnostics

Diagnosis is based on the result of a fasting blood glucose test. If the glucose level exceeds 6.1 mmol/l, this indicates the presence of the disease. Most often, people aged 40 years and older are susceptible to the disease. At an earlier age, type 2 diabetes is diagnosed much less frequently.

It often happens that type 2 diabetes gradually turns into type 1 (insulin-dependent type). This is due to the fact that the pancreas has to produce insulin more intensively and thereby quickly deplete its potential. As a result, insulin production drops significantly or stops completely, which indicates the transition of the disease to the stage dependent on insulin injections.

Consequences

In the absence of medical care, as well as in case of non-compliance with the diet or omissions in taking prescribed medications, type 2 diabetes can lead to a number of complications, including

  • renal dysfunction;
  • disorders of the cardiovascular system;
  • visual impairment;
  • damage to blood vessels;

The main reason for the occurrence of such consequences is considered to be late detection of the disease. Therefore, it is very important to identify the disease as early as possible and follow all doctor’s instructions. It’s not for nothing that they say: “Diabetes mellitus is not a disease, but a way of life.”

Contraindications

It is definitely possible to try to cure type 2 diabetes using traditional methods. The main thing is not to overdo it and not self-medicate. There are many indications for the use of traditional medicine, but there are also contraindications, including:

  • lack of clear medical instructions for the use of a particular product;
  • lack of primary drug therapy;
  • presence of bad habits;
  • drinking alcohol, smoking:
  • improper body care;
  • late delivery of tests:
  • lack of regular monitoring of blood sugar levels;
  • presence of an allergy to one or more components included in the infusion, decoction, etc.;

Unfortunately, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes increases every year. This disease is characterized by impaired carbohydrate metabolism and an increase in blood sugar levels beyond normal limits (above 5.5 mmol/l). Most often it develops against the background of poor nutrition and obesity.

If the disease was identified at the initial stages of its development, then its further progression can be stopped with the help of special medicinal herbs that alternative medicine suggests using. And now you will find out which herbs can be used for diabetes mellitus.

In medicine, it is customary to distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Type 1 diabetes is a systemic disease in which there is decreased insulin secretion. This occurs due to impaired functioning of the pancreas, which is responsible for the production of this hormone.

Since the main task of insulin lies in breaking down sugar and transporting it into the cells and tissues of the body, when there is a lack of this hormone, glucose does not respond to all these processes and simply settles in the blood in the form of microcrystalline elements.

Diabetes mellitus type 1 may be a hereditary pathology or a consequence of improper treatment of T2DM. Unfortunately, it is impossible to cure this disease using alternative medicine. In this case, the diabetic needs replacement therapy, which involves the use of insulin injections.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a slightly different form of the disease. During its development, the pancreas works normally, but the cells lose sensitivity to insulin. That is, they do not pass it through themselves, therefore, they are not saturated with glucose. And since its quantity exceeds the norm, it also begins to settle in the blood.

In this case, you can use herbs for diabetes. They will not only help normalize the concentration of glucose in the blood, but also increase the sensitivity of the body’s tissues and cells to insulin, which will prevent the development of complications and the transition of T2DM to T1DM.

How do herbs help with diabetes?

There are a huge number of medicinal herbs that can be used to treat type 2 diabetes. For example:

  • goat's rue;
  • bearberry;
  • St. John's wort;
  • nettle;
  • cuff and many others.

You can use herbs to treat diabetes only after prior consultation with a specialist.

These herbs are useful for diabetes because they have a multifaceted effect on the body and provide prevention of various complications inherent in this disease. Firstly, they help activate regeneration processes, which ensures rapid healing of wounds and ulcers on the body, thereby preventing the development of gangrene.

Secondly, their use can increase the tone and elasticity of the walls of blood vessels, as well as lower the level of “bad” cholesterol in the blood, thereby reducing the risk of problems with the cardiovascular system. And thirdly, these herbs provide reliable protection to liver and kidney cells from sugar, which also reduces the likelihood of developing kidney and liver failure.

But most importantly, medicinal herbs help increase the sensitivity of body cells to insulin and reduce blood sugar levels, which is very important in the development of diabetes. In addition, some herbs provide protection to pancreatic cells, preventing their damage and thereby maintaining normal insulin synthesis.

Precautionary measures

Before talking about what herbs can be used to treat diabetes, a few words should be said about precautions that are very important to consider during therapy. The first thing to say is that when treating diabetes, you need to take into account the composition of herbs. They are all different and contain different components that have their own effect.

Improper use of herbs can lead to poor health!

Some of them provide a diuretic effect, others help lower blood pressure. And if a diabetic suffers from diseases such as kidney failure or hypotension, then herbal teas should be taken very carefully, as they can lead to a sharp deterioration in well-being. Therefore, before starting treatment, you should definitely consult your doctor.

In addition, it is important to follow the rules for storing herbs, since if they are violated, the medicinal properties of the herbs will be reduced and toxic substances will begin to accumulate in them, which will only aggravate the course of the disease.

Important! If, while treating diabetes with herbs, you begin to notice a deterioration in your health (nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, etc.), you should immediately stop self-medication and consult a doctor.

Effective herbs for diabetes

For diabetes, you can use various decoctions and infusions prepared from medicinal herbs. But their use should be carried out according to all the rules, without violating the dosages. Otherwise, side effects may appear in the form of hypoglycemia and other conditions that will cause a sharp deterioration in well-being.

goat's rue

Goat's rue is the most popular and effective remedy that can be taken for diabetes. Both decoctions and infusions are prepared from it. In the first case, goat's rue seeds are used. Drink the product no more than 4 times a day. 30-40 minutes after taking it, you must definitely eat, since red has a hypoglycemic effect, and if you skip a meal after taking its infusion, hypoglycemia may develop.

Next, as usual, the resulting infusion needs to be filtered. You need to drink the infusion 15-20 minutes before meals, 80-100 ml at a time.

Cottonweed

For T2DM, dried cucumber also provides a good therapeutic effect. An infusion is prepared from it, which is consumed up to 4 times a day, 15 ml. This is done like this: 15-20 g of raw material is poured with boiling water (200-250 ml), covered with a lid and cooled at room temperature, after which it is filtered.

Bay leaf

An equally effective remedy for treating diabetes is bay leaf. In addition to the fact that it normalizes blood sugar levels, it also helps lower blood pressure, which often increases with diabetes.
