pharmachologic effect

The main effect of Regulon is associated with the suppression of ovulation and inhibition of the synthesis of gonadotropins. By inhibiting the ovulation process, the drug makes it difficult for sperm to penetrate the uterus, and also prevents the fertilized egg from reaching the uterine wall.

The active substances of Regulon are the female sex hormones desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. Ethinyl estradiol is a synthetic analogue of endogenous estradiol. As for desogestrel, it has a pronounced antiestrogenic and gestagenic effect, and exhibits minor androgenic and anabolic activity.

When used, there is a significant reduction in blood loss during menstruation, the menstrual cycle is normalized and the general condition of the skin improves.

special instructions

Before prescribing the drug, a complete medical examination of the patient is carried out to confirm the absence of contraindications and pregnancy. While taking Regulon, the woman's physical condition should be periodically monitored.

In old age

It is prescribed with special caution to women over 35 years of age and is not used after menopause.

For impaired renal function

Use with extreme caution in the presence of renal failure.

For liver dysfunction

The drug is contraindicated in liver failure.

Drug interactions

The effectiveness of Regulon is reduced by: Rifampicin, Hydantoin, Felbamate, Primidon, Carbamazepine, Griseofulvin, Oxcarbazepine, Topiramate, barbiturates and preparations based on St. John's wort.

The drug is also less effective in combination with Ampicillin and Tetracycline. If it is necessary to use it together with these antibiotics, it is recommended to resort to additional barrier methods of contraception throughout the course, as well as for a week after discontinuation of the drug.

Directions for use and dosage

Regulon tablets are taken orally.

It is optimal that the first dose occurs on the first day of the menstrual cycle. For 3 weeks, a woman should take 1 tablet daily (at the same time if possible). From 22 to 28 days of the cycle there is a break. Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs at this time. Exactly 4 weeks after the first dose of the drug, on the same day of the week, the course is resumed - they begin taking tablets from a new blister, regardless of whether the withdrawal bleeding has ended or not.

This regimen is followed as long as the need for contraception continues. If a woman does not miss a dose and follows all recommendations, the contraceptive effect continues during the seven-day break.

If a woman starts taking Regulon from the 1st day of the cycle, additional contraception is not needed. If taking pills is started between days 2 and 5 of the cycle, barrier contraceptives must be used during the first week. If more than 5 days have passed since the start of menstruation, it is recommended to take the drug in the next cycle.

After childbirth, if a woman is not breastfeeding, taking pills is allowed to begin after 3 weeks, but only after consultation with the attending physician. In this case, there is no need to use additional methods of contraception. If there was sexual intercourse after childbirth, taking the pills should be postponed until the first menstruation.

When the decision to take COCs (combined oral contraceptives) is made later than 3 weeks after birth, barrier contraceptives should be used during the first week of using Regulon.

After an abortion, in the absence of contraindications, pills should be taken from 1 day after surgery. Additional contraception is not needed in this case.

When switching to Regulon from another contraceptive for oral use, it is recommended to take the first tablet the day after the last tablet from the pack for a 28-day course is taken, or the day after the end of the week-long break if using the drug, which is designed for a 21-day course. There is no need to use additional contraception.

If a woman switches to Regulon from a mini-pill, the first tablet should be taken on the 1st day of the cycle. Additional contraception is not needed in this case.

If a woman does not have menstruation while taking the mini-pill, then Regulon can be taken any day, but only after pregnancy has been ruled out. During the first week of using the drug, you should use barrier contraceptives or abstain from sexual relations. The use of the calendar method in this case is recommended.

When it is necessary to delay menstrual bleeding, after completing the 21-day course, you should continue taking tablets from the new blister without the usual seven-day break. During this period, spotting or breakthrough bleeding may appear from the genital tract, which does not interfere with the contraceptive effect of the drug. Regular use of the drug is restored after the usual seven-day break.

If a woman has forgotten that she needs to take a pill, and less than 12 hours have passed since the missed pill, she just needs to take the missed pill and continue the course, taking the drug according to the usual regimen.

If more than 12 hours have passed, the reliability of contraception decreases, therefore:

  • If you miss a dose in the first or second week of the cycle, you need to take 2 tablets at once the next day, and then continue using Regulon according to the usual regimen, using additional contraception until the end of the cycle;
  • If a pill was missed in the third week, it should be taken as early as possible and continue using the drug without maintaining the standard seven-day interval between courses, using additional methods of contraception.

The absorption of Regulon may be impaired if a woman experiences vomiting or diarrhea after taking the pill. When symptoms stop within 12 hours, it is recommended to take an additional tablet and continue using the drug as usual. If symptoms persist for more than 12 hours, barrier contraception should be used throughout the period of vomiting/diarrhea and for the next 7 days.

Side effects

The most severe but rare side effects that are possible during the use of Regulon are:

  • Arterial hypertension;
  • Thromboembolism of veins/arteries;
  • Hearing loss (as a complication of otosclerosis);
  • Porphyria;
  • Hemolytic-uremic syndrome;
  • Exacerbation of reactive SLE;
  • Sydenham's chorea (is transient and disappears after discontinuation of COCs).

If any of the above phenomena occur, you should immediately stop taking the drug.

Relatively common adverse reactions of Regulon are:

  • Acyclic spotting or bleeding from the genital tract;
  • Amenorrhea after stopping the drug;
  • Inflammatory processes in the genital tract;
  • Changes in the state of vaginal secretions;
  • Thrush;
  • Galactorrhea;
  • Increased size, tension and soreness of the mammary glands;
  • Nausea;
  • Crohn's disease;
  • Vomit;
  • Ulcerative colitis;
  • Headache;
  • Cholelithiasis;
  • Erythema (nodular or exudative);
  • Chloasma;
  • Rash;
  • Development/exacerbation of itching and/or jaundice associated with cholestasis;
  • Migraine attacks;
  • Mood lability;
  • Depression;
  • Increased sensitivity of the cornea (which can cause intolerance to contact lenses);
  • Fluid retention in the body;
  • Decreased tolerance to carbohydrates;
  • Weight change (usually upward);
  • Hypersensitivity reactions.

In all the described cases, the decision on the advisability of further taking Regulon is made by the doctor on an individual basis after assessing the benefit/risk ratio.

An overdose of Regulon may result in nausea and vomiting, and bleeding from the genital tract. In the first 2-3 hours after taking a high dose of the drug, it is recommended to perform gastric lavage. The drug does not have a specific antidote; further treatment is symptomatic.

special instructions

A decrease in the effectiveness of COCs, including Regulon, is observed when they are used simultaneously with drugs that are characterized by the ability to induce liver enzymes. These include:

  • Primidone;
  • Hydantoin;
  • Rifampicin;
  • Barbiturates;
  • Carbamazepine;
  • Topiramate;
  • Oxcarbazepine;
  • Felbamate;
  • St. John's wort preparations;
  • Griseofulvin.

In addition, women taking Regulon simultaneously with the medications listed above significantly increase the risk of developing breakthrough bleeding. The maximum level of induction is usually achieved after 2-3 weeks of use, but may persist for up to 4 weeks after discontinuation of the drug.

The effectiveness of Regulon is also reduced if taken during treatment with drugs of the ampicillin and tetracycline group. If it is necessary to use them together, it is recommended to use additional contraception throughout the course and for another 7 days after discontinuation of antibiotics; for rifampicin, this period increases to 28 days.

COCs can reduce carbohydrate tolerance and may increase the need for oral antidiabetic drugs and insulin.

Analogs

Novinet, Mercilon, Marvelon.

Terms and conditions of storage

The tablets should be stored in a dry place at a temperature of 15° to 30°C.

The shelf life of Regulon is 3 years.

The modern market of contraceptives with hormonal components is represented by a wide variety of products. These include tablet formulations, vaginal rings, and even patches and injections. Thanks to such a variety of medicinal compositions, every woman can choose the contraception option that will be optimal for her. Gynecological specialists say that it is best for young and nulliparous girls to turn their attention to monophasic formulations. One of these contraceptive medications is Regulon.

What is the composition of Regulon?

This composition is sold in tablet form, each unit has a round, biconvex shape and is white in color. Each tablet contains one hundred and fifty micrograms of desogestrel, as well as thirty micrograms of ethinyl estradiol.

The first of these components has a persistent antiestrogenic and progestogenic effect, and additionally has mild anabolic and androgenic activity. Ethinyl estradiol is a synthetic analogue of the hormone estradiol.

Auxiliary components include substances such as lactose monohydrate, alpha-tocopherol and potato starch. Additional ingredients also include colloidal silicon dioxide, povidone, magnesium stearate and stearic acid. Each blister contains twenty-one tablets.

What does Regulon do?

Consumption of this drug leads to suppression of ovulatory processes and also stimulates inhibition of the production of gonadotropins. Regulon leads to an increase in the viscosity of cervical mucus, which significantly complicates and slows down the passage of sperm through the cervical canal. In addition, some deviations of the endometrium occur in the uterus, due to which the fertilized egg simply cannot implant.

The use of Regulon has a positive effect on lipid metabolism, increasing the concentration of HDL within the blood plasma and without having any effect on LDL.

When using this medicinal composition, there is a noticeable reduction in the loss of menstrual blood, while the menstrual cycle is somewhat shortened, and the condition of the epidermis is optimized.

What is the use of Regulon?

The instructions for use recommend using Regulon only after consulting a doctor and passing a series of tests. The tablet composition of Regulon is intended for oral consumption. They begin to be consumed starting from the very first day of the menstrual cycle (on the first day of the onset of menstruation), continuing consumption for twenty-one days. To achieve maximum effectiveness, it is worth taking it at the same time of day (plus or minus half an hour). After consuming the last tablet, it is recommended to take a break for one week. It is at this time that menstruation should occur.

The consumption of the next blister begins after the week break has expired. Accordingly, this will be the first day of the fifth week after taking the very first tablet of the medicine. With proper consumption of Regulon, its contraceptive effect is maintained for a period of a week-long break.

If you forget to take one tablet, you should take it within twelve hours. In this case, no additional contraception is required.

If consumption is missed for a period of more than twelve hours, the efficiency of Regulon consumption decreases by an order of magnitude. Accordingly, there is a need to find and use additional means of contraception, for example, a condom.

What are the side effects of Regulon?

According to the instructions, Regulon can provoke the development of a number of side effects. Thus, the appearance of certain pathological conditions requires discontinuation of the use of the drug, this applies to hearing loss due to otosclerosis, the development of venous or arterial thromboembolism and hypertension. It is also worth stopping the use of this medication if the patient develops porphyria, Sydenham chorea, exacerbations of reactive systemic lupus erythematosus and hemolytic-uremic syndrome.

Regulon can also provoke other symptoms, which are much more common, but if they appear, there is no need to urgently stop using the medicine. So, in certain situations, this contraceptive can cause acyclic bleeding from the vaginal cavity and changes in the state of vaginal mucus. The patient may notice pain and tension in the mammary glands, and the breasts may also increase in size. Sometimes candidiasis, galactorrhea occur, inflammatory lesions of the vagina are formed, as well as amenorrhea after stopping the drug.

Consumption of the drug is sometimes accompanied by migraines, headaches, depression and mood swings. A small proportion of patients develop Crohn's disease, nausea or vomiting, ulcerative colitis, or jaundice develops or worsens due to cholelithiasis or cholestasis.

If the patient wears contact lenses, she may experience increased sensitivity of the cornea. Side effects also include the appearance of dermatological problems - erythema nodosum and exudative erythema, chloasma. Some girls experience increased body weight, increased swelling, and decreased tolerance to carbohydrates. Various allergic reactions may also occur.

Review of Regulon - many side effects (mandarinka92, irecommend.ru)

Let's look at the side effects medium and light weight:

  • Often, when starting to use Regulon, a woman may experience bloody issues, which have nothing to do with the menstrual cycle.
  • If you suddenly stop taking pills after taking them for a long time, you may experience endometrial rejection, which leads to the absence of menstrual bleeding, as a result of which a woman cannot become pregnant.
  • It may happen while taking pills changes in the normal microflora of the vagina. In this case, thrush or bacterial vulvovaginitis often occurs.
  • Tablets often cause stomach upset. In this case, the woman may experience nausea accompanied by vomiting. This side effect is also characterized by stool upset.
  • Frequent mood swings, prolonged depression- also refers to a side effect of the contraceptive.
  • The most common symptom of an adverse reaction in the body is painful sensations, which can be localized in the lower abdomen or in the form of headaches.
  • Very often, patients complain that when taking Regulon they become gain weight quickly. Fullness is another side effect. In fact, the hormones themselves that are contained in the tablets do not affect weight gain, but can significantly increase a woman’s appetite, as a result of which the patient gains weight.
  • Like any other drug, Regulon can provoke allergic reaction in the form of skin itching and rash.
  • Possible swelling that occurs in the morning.

The above symptoms are of moderate severity, that is, they do not require immediate discontinuation of the drug.

In case of side effects, you should definitely consult a gynecologist. Only a doctor can select individual birth control pills.
