Monument to the cities of military glory

The central event of the day is the opening of the memorial sign “Memorial complex dedicated to the cities of military glory” on Poklonnaya Hill.

– Moscow is the capital, so the circle of cities of military glory had to be closed with a stele here, on Poklonnaya Hill. 75 years ago, near Moscow, the wheels of history slipped and turned back. The war machine of the Third Reich encountered Russian stubbornness and Russian frosts. The victory of May 9, 1945 was laid out in the December cold near Moscow, said Nikolai Zemtsov after the unveiling of the memorial sign.

The memorial is a skyward granite stele topped with a double-headed eagle. The column is mounted on a pedestal decorated with a bronze cartouche dedicated to the cities of military glory. The names of all the cities of military glory of the Russian Federation are carved on the decorative granite steles that frame the area around the stele on both sides. On the four sides of the stele there are four bronze bas-reliefs with figures of warriors from different eras.

The first bas-relief, reflecting the birth and development of Russia's military power, depicts Prince Svyatoslav, Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Sergius of Radonezh and Dmitry Pozharsky.

The second bas-relief is dedicated to the heroic events of the 18th-19th centuries and represents Emperor Peter the Great, Fyodor Ushakov, Alexander Suvorov, Mikhail Kutuzov, and in the background - Bagration and Barclay de Tolly.

The third bas-relief is dedicated to the heroes of the defense of Sevastopol and the liberation wars in the Balkans: these are Dasha Sevastopolskaya, Admiral Pavel Nakhimov, sailor Pyotr Koshka, General Mikhail Skobelev, Admiral Stepan Makarov.

The fourth bas-relief is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War and is represented by a pilot, sailor, soldier and tanker, as well as a modern pilot. Behind the heroes, bronze banners of different eras flutter in the wind. The total height of the stele is about 16 meters.

The project “Stela of Cities of Military Glory”, winner of the open All-Russian competition in 2008 for the best architectural and sculptural project, was used as a model for the memorial sign. Today, 45 Russian cities bear the honorary title “City of Military Glory.”

Military Glory Day

December 5 is one of the Days of Military Glory of Russia established by the Federal Law, which was adopted on February 10, 1995 by the State Duma and signed by the President of the Russian Federation. Since 2012, the capital has been celebrating this day as a city holiday.

75 years ago, on December 5-6, 1941, Soviet troops launched a counteroffensive against enemy positions during the Moscow battle. It was prepared and carried out in a difficult environment. The Soviet troops, with some superiority in aircraft, had almost half as much artillery, one third less tanks, and were inferior in number of military personnel. However, the battle of Moscow ended in the complete defeat of the Nazi group, which included 11 tank, 4 motorized and 23 infantry divisions. More than 11 thousand settlements were liberated. As a result of further hostilities, the enemy was thrown back 100-250 km from Moscow.

The Battle of Moscow is considered one of the decisive battles of the Great Patriotic War. The counteroffensive of the Soviet troops here grew into a general offensive of the Red Army along the entire front. Having won a victory near Moscow, Soviet troops dispelled the myth of the invincibility of the German army. As a result, the Nazi command was forced to switch to strategic defense. The Battle of Moscow is the first successful major operation during the Great Patriotic War, which marked the beginning of the liberation of the country from occupation.
