What is the size of the avatar in nokia 820. a total overview of the possibilities. Information about the dimensions and weight of the device, presented in different units of measurement. Used materials, suggested colors, certificates

As you know, at the Nokia World 2012 event, the Finnish manufacturer introduced two of its new smartphones running on the new version of the Windows Phone operating system. The Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 are Nokia's first WP8 smartphones. In this review, we will take a closer look at the "younger" model - Nokia Lumia 820, which company representatives call the most versatile Lumia. So, the smartphone delights users with a comfortable, bright and stylish body, a large 4.3-inch ClearBlack display, an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and various interesting features, support for Near Field Communication technology and much more. Advanced technologies and modern design make the Lumia 820 very attractive for any category of users: from "advanced" youth to respectable business people.

general information

Equipment

As usual, the smartphone is packed in a small blue box. Included in the package are:

  • Nokia Lumia 820
  • charger Nokia AC-50
  • battery BP-5T (1650 mAh)
  • charging data cable Nokia CA-190CD
  • Nokia headset WH-208
  • user guide

Size and weight

The appearance has moved away from the already slightly boring design of the Nokia N9. The new smartphone has a slightly more rounded shape. But the main "feature" of the model is the ability to replace the back of the case. Moreover, these panels are made in bright, rich colors: yellow, red, blue, etc. In addition, you can install panels with a functional purpose: for wireless charging and heavy-duty. The dimensions of the device are 123.8x68.5x9.9 mm, weight - 160 g.

Inputs/outputs and keys

Nokia Lumia 820 has several physical keys made of a very durable material - zirconium ceramics. All the keys are already well known, these are the double volume button on the right side of the device, the screen lock button and the camera button in the same place. There are no physical keys on the left side.

On the top edge is a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. At the bottom there is a speaker, a microUSB connector for charging and connecting a smartphone to a PC.

The microSIM card in Nokia Lumia 820 is inserted into the slot under the rear panel. There is also a slot for a microSD memory card, which is very unusual for "Lumias", because additional memory in the form of a removable memory card in smartphones of this series appeared for the first time. The rear panel is very tightly in place, nothing dangles anywhere, however, this creates certain difficulties when replacing it. In the process of removing the cover, you can break off more than one nail.

At the bottom of the front panel below the screen are the Windows function keys: "Back", "Start" and "Search". A loudspeaker, light and proximity sensors, as well as a front VGA camera with a resolution of 640x480 pixels are installed above the screen.

On the back is an 8-megapixel main camera with a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens. Unlike, here it is surrounded not by a ceramic insert, but by a simple plastic one.

Of course, the quality of the display in Nokia Lumia 820 is not as great as in the 920 model, but it certainly cannot be called mediocre either. The smartphone has a 4.3-inch capacitive AMOLED screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. The display is made using ClearBlack technology, which, as you know, provides the most clear and vivid display of colors, especially black. One of the main "chips" of the new "Lumii" on WP8 is the ability to control the smartphone not only with your finger, but also with such unusual objects as keys, nails, styluses, and also gloved fingers. The highly sensitive screen is responsive to touch with almost any object, which, however, does not mean that the smartphone will call on its own, for example, in the pocket of a bag or trousers. "Smart" devices are guided by the proximity sensor, so you should not expect random calls. Nokia's new WP8 smartphones are three times more capable of detecting pressure than other devices, thanks to the use of Synaptics ClearPad 3250 touch sensors located directly in the display cell. The new Lumia smartphones can recognize up to 10 taps on the screen at the same time. Besides, in Nokia Lumia 820 implemented additional features that allow you to work in bright sunlight. The smartphone has a high brightness mode, turning on which, there is a feeling that all the inscriptions (especially white on a black background) just "hang" somewhere in the depths of the screen. Incidentally, the Lumia 820 delivered better viewing angles than the higher-resolution Lumia 920.

The Lumiya 820 uses a removable BP-5T battery with a capacity of 1650 mAh and a voltage of 3.7 V. conversation 15.4 hours and 8.1 hours respectively. One battery charge will allow you to listen to music for about 61 hours. With an average load, the device can work for about a day or two. Well, of course Nokia Lumia 820 can be charged wirelessly. To do this, you must have a special charger and a special back cover. Then you can use accessories such as Nokia Wireless Charging Plate, Nokia Wireless Charging Stand, Fatboy Recharge Pillow, JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker. It is worth noting that special pads for wireless charging of the new Lumiyas can already be found in some Moscow cafes.

Supported networks

Nokia Lumia 820 supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA Band V (850)/Band VIII (900)/Band II (1900)/Band I (2100) networks. In addition, unlike the iPhone, the new Lumia smartphones support both American and Russian 4G LTE standards (800/900/1800/2100/2600). The signal is received perfectly, the quality of communication is at a high level.

One of the features of the Nokia Lumia 820 was the support for microSD memory cards. Thus, in addition to 8 GB of internal memory, cards up to 64 GB can be used. In addition, Microsoft offers 7GB of SkyDrive cloud storage. So Lumia 820 owners should not suffer from a lack of storage space. The amount of RAM in the smartphone is 1 GB. After installing the memory card, a question appears on the screen, or do we want to save all new photos, videos and music to the memory card.

If there is already some information on the map (photos or videos), they will be displayed in the Gallery as a separate album. The captured pictures can be copied to the phone memory. We note the peculiarity of such copying, since we did not succeed in transferring the photo from the card to the phone right away. It would seem that it is worth long pressing to call up the context menu and it would be logical to find the "Save on phone" item there. But no, to complete this procedure, you need to press the "Select" button, select the necessary photos, and only then in the additional functions (called by clicking on the three dots "...") the "Save on phone" item will appear.

The reverse process (from phone to memory card) is exactly the same, with the only difference being that you should select the "Save to SD card" item.

Software platform

Once again, we note that Nokia Lumia 820 is one of Nokia's new products, built on the basis of the Windows Phone 8 operating system. The new version of the OS supports the use of multi-core processors, so Nokia installed a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz in the 820 model. Powerful processor provides high performance smartphone, while consuming a minimum of battery power. According to official figures, the Nokia Lumia 820 processor uses a unique asynchronous technology that allows you to achieve the maximum level of performance of each core. More than once on our resource we noted the possibilities of the new version of WP. To recap, Windows Phone 8 brought a new look to smartphones, support for memory cards and powerful multi-core processors, new screen resolutions, new features (Children's, Rooms), Internet Explorer 10, over-the-air updates, NFC, and more. In addition, one of the notable features of WP8 was advanced multitasking. Now some applications, even when minimized, continue to work. To minimize applications, use the "Start" button, to go to the task manager - a long tap on the "Back" button.

User interface

Desktop and main menu

Tiles familiar from other Windows Phone smartphones in Nokia Lumia 820 have undergone some changes. Now they come in three sizes. The smallest ones can contain the least important information, and the larger tiles can be allocated for frequently used functions. The data in the tiles changes all the time, in some the information is updated online, in some the images simply change. As in other WP-smartphones, to change the location of the icons, you should activate the screen with a long tap on any square or rectangle. In Lumia 820, the icon will not only display a button to pin the icon to a specific location on the screen, but also an arrow, by clicking on which you can adjust the size of the icon.

Of particular note are the innovations in customizing the lock screen. In new Nokia smartphones on WP8, it can display not only the usual date, time, day of the week, but also detailed information about missed calls, unread sms and e-mail, calendar events. Notifications are configured through the menu item "Settings" - "Lock Screen" (in WP7 it was the item "Lock + Background").

Here you can choose the background of the screen: a photo from the gallery or pictures from the Bing collection. And select an application, detailed information about which will be displayed on the lock screen: calendar (events scheduled for today will appear on the screen), messages (the author and part of the text are displayed), phone (subscriber name and call time), email (sender and letter title). In addition, up to five applications can be selected separately, the information of which will be displayed on the lock screen in a brief form. Of course, you can set the screen timeout from 30 seconds to 5 minutes (by the way, in Nokia Lumia 920 this time varies from 30 seconds to 30 minutes) and enable or disable the password request when unlocking the screen.

The interface background in Nokia 820 can be made in two colors - dark and light. But the color of the icons, the positions of switching on and off various functions, the headers of unread letters, etc. can be changed to your liking by choosing one of the proposed bright colors: turquoise, pink, purple, light green, etc. There are now 20 possible colors.

"Scrolling" the home screen to the left, we get to the main menu. You can also get here by clicking on the arrow image on the screen, which, unlike WP7, has moved to the bottom of the screen and is located at the bottom of all icons, which frees up space for tiles. The main menu looks like a list of applications sorted by name. You can use the "Search" button to find the application you need, or you can search for it manually. If there are already more than 50 positions in the list, then an alphabetical index appears, which allows you to search for applications by the first letter in their name.

Virtual keyboard

The virtual keyboard is called from applications that have character input fields. The keyboard in Nokia 820 is almost the same as in Windows Phone 7, except that some keys have changed their location and word suggestions have become more "smart".

Phone service and communication

Contacts and calls

Applications "Contacts" and "Phone" in a smartphone Nokia 820 highlighted in separate tiles on the desktop and main menu items. There is nothing unusual about these applications. The "Phone" tile contains information about the name of the mobile operator and the number of missed calls. In the application itself, we immediately get into the call log, where incoming, outgoing, and missed calls are placed. There are four icons at the bottom of the screen: voice mail, dialer, contacts and search. In the app's settings, you can turn on call forwarding or the curious "International Calls" feature, which automatically fixes some errors when dialing international numbers or dialing numbers from abroad.

The dialer contains the familiar numeric keypad and two buttons "Call" and "Save". During a call, the screen displays the number, the "End" button, the button for accessing the dialer, switching to the external speaker and back, as well as the hold and add call buttons.

In the Contacts app, the very first contact is the owner of the phone. All the information about the author is collected here: you can add a photo, set up accounts in social services, publish messages in social networks (moreover, in all at once or select the necessary one), set the status (online, offline, busy, away, etc.). P.). In addition, you can register your location directly from the "Me" card. Update information about the activity of the smartphone owner is displayed in a separate "What's new" feed.

The contact list is sorted alphabetically. The avatar (photo) of the contact and his first and last name are displayed here. To quickly find the desired contact, you can use the search button or click on the icon with any letter and bring up the Russian and English alphabets on the screen, where you can quickly go to the desired letter and, accordingly, to the list of contacts starting with this letter.

The contact card contains all the information about him: photo, phone number, quick access to writing sms or email. If the contact in the list came from friends in social services, then there will be more options "Write on the wall", etc. Scrolling through the contact pages, we alternately get to the "What's new" tabs, which display the contact's activity in social services, "Photo" and "Journal". Like other Nokia WP-smartphones, Lumia 820 can link several profiles of one contact into one: for example, combine contact information from the phone memory and Facebook profile in one card. When creating a new contact, you can set a name, phone number, email address, set a ringtone - these are the main features. Additionally, adding an address, website, date of birth, presence of children, office location, position, etc. is available. The closest or most called contacts can be placed on the desktop as a separate icon, the size of which can be changed, like other tiles.

Scrolling through the pages of the "Contacts" application further, we find the "Recent" tab with a list of contacts that we have recently contacted. Further down is the new "All Together" tab. Here we see the applications "Groups" (allow you to group contacts, for example, work and personal) and "Rooms". The latter is of particular interest. The function allows you to create special virtual rooms and correspond in them with friends and family members, as well as exchange various data, open access to the calendar, notes, publish photos and videos.

Messages

In modern smartphones, you can exchange not only the usual text sms messages and multimedia mms. The ubiquitous access to the Internet makes it possible to write e-mails as well as instant messages on Internet services. was no exception and Nokia Lumia 820. The Messages app also allows you to send your location stamps and voice memos. All messages are presented as a list of conversations with different subscribers. There are three buttons at the bottom of the screen: Create, Status (opens access to the status task) and Select (allows you to mark several conversations at once for deletion). In the process of typing a message, you can attach multimedia files to it and then sms is transformed into mms. Everything is simple, familiar and convenient.

Email

As in other windows backgrounds, in Nokia 820 there are basic settings for several mail services. If none of the offered services is suitable, you can add a new account yourself. Access to the mail settings is carried out through the menu item "Settings" - "Mail + accounts". Here you can connect to email services or set up accounts for various online services. Configured mailboxes can be brought to the main screen with a separate tile. In the mailbox itself, letters are divided into several tabs: all, unread, important. The mail application allows you to link incoming messages from several accounts in one folder, which is very convenient, because then letters sent to all e-mail addresses of the user will be collected in one window. Of the "decorations" of the application, only a background change from dark to light and vice versa is available.

Connections

The USB connector in the Nokia 820 smartphone has moved to the bottom end of the case. Using the connector, the device is charged and connected to a PC for copying multimedia content. Yes Yes! Now you should not clutter up your computer with a program and sort through hundreds of songs, videos and photos piled up in one heap. On the new Lumia, these files can be copied through Explorer, where a smartphone connected via USB is defined as a portable device. Moreover, in Nokia Lumia 820 with a memory card, two types of memory are displayed: phone and memory card. The Nokia 820 uses the USB 2.0 standard. The connection takes place according to the MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) standard, which allows you to disconnect your smartphone from your computer at any time without losing data, without resorting to "safe extraction", as required by USB drives.

The built-in Wi-Fi module supports 802.11 a/b/g/n standards. The smartphone can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and distribute the connection to 5 Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Connection settings are accessed through the main menu - "Settings" - "Wi-Fi".

The Nokia Lumia 820 has a Bluetooth 3.0 module installed. As expected by definition, it can be used to establish a wireless connection with other devices: phones, computers, headsets and car kits. In addition, WP8 finally has the ability to transfer files via Bluetooth.

A relatively new feature in modern smartphones, NFC near-field communication, allows you to instantly connect with compatible devices and transfer photos, websites, contacts, and more by touching another NFC device with your phone. File transfer is fast, you just need to contrive and find the right position at which the NFC connection will occur.

Multimedia features

Unfortunately, unlike the new flagship Nokia Lumia 920, the Lumia 820 doesn't get a stunning camera with built-in optical image stabilization. However, the 8-megapixel main camera with Carl Zeiss optics takes good photos and is capable of shooting 1080p video (Full HD, 1920x1080 pixels).

In addition to the main Lumiya 820 There is also a front camera with a resolution of 640x480 pixels. Dual LED flash allows you to take pictures in low light conditions. The camera is equipped with touch focus, it is possible to put geotagging, automatically or manually adjust the white balance, as well as edit the created photos.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the smartphone's camera, we have prepared a selection of photos taken by two new Nokia WP-based smartphones in various conditions.

DAY SHOOTING

In video recording mode, you can shoot videos of the highest quality - Full HD at 30 frames per second.

An example of a video taken with a Nokia Lumia 820 camera

All created photos and videos are stored in the Photos app. The main application window provides access to four folders where pictures are stored: PhotoDisk, Albums, Date and People. The What's New tab contains photo updates from social media. The photos you take can be sent to friends as a message, via NFC, or in the OneNote note-taking app.

Videos, except for the gallery, can be viewed in a separate section "Music + video".

Music + Video

Music and video are combined into a hub of the same name. In the collection, in addition to music and video files, podcasts are also stored. The application has tabs for recently listened to and watched, as well as new files. Playable audio file formats: ASF, WAV, MP4, AAC, AMR, MP3, M4A, WMA, 3GP, 3G2. The list of music files is sorted by artists, albums, compositions, genres, playlists.

Directly in the "Music + Video" hub, access to the proprietary Nokia Music service is provided. Here, the user's music files are combined, access to Internet radio and an mp3 music store is opened.

The interface of the music player is simple and familiar: the screen displays the album cover, track name, artist, shows the duration of the file, pause / play buttons and go to the previous and next file in the list. In addition, a useful "trick" appeared: the names of the next two compositions are displayed on the screen. Songs can be saved as a playlist. On the lock screen, when listening to music, the keys for switching between tracks and pause are displayed.

The smartphone's external speaker produces sound cleaner, louder and louder than the Lumia 920. The test showed that the volume level is 81.8dB, the Nokia Lumia 920 has 77.4dB, and the Nokia 808 has 83.8dB.

When you turn on the video player, the display orientation automatically changes to landscape and the screen shows the movie title, scroll bar, video duration and viewing time, as well as the standard pause/play and fast forward/rewind buttons.

Calendar and Calculator

The calendar and calculator in Nokia 820 are separated into separate applications located in the main menu. In the application Calendar There are three tabs: Schedule, Tasks and Day. It is clear that the Schedule contains information about scheduled meetings, the dates of birth of contacts from the notebook are also displayed here. The schedule is presented in the form of information for today or for the entire month at once. More detailed entries for the current day are on the Day tab. Here the day is divided into an hourly table.

Write in detail about a standard application Calculator doesn't even make sense. This application is in high demand in the modern world for the quick execution of even the most elementary mathematical operations. In portrait orientation, the calculator is presented in the form of a simple mathematical one, and turning it to a horizontal position, we will see buttons with trigonometric functions (which are unlikely to be needed by anyone except students and schoolchildren).

Before the official release of Windows Phone 8, it was reported that the Skype application was integrated into the system. Unfortunately, this information has not been confirmed, however, Skype can still be used in Nokia Lumia 820. To do this, you just need to download it from the application store and install it on your smartphone. By connecting to Skype, all the user's contacts from this application are automatically added to the contact list on the phone. As usual, via Skype you can make calls, video calls, exchange text messages. Everything works fine, Skype did not cause any complaints. It is hoped that Microsoft will integrate such a useful application into the Windows Phone system after all.

Unique Features

Purse

Windows Phone 8 has a built-in Wallet app. Here you can store credit and debit cards, discount cards, coupons, discount cards, etc. in electronic form. In the application, you can monitor the balance on the cards, pay for the purchase of games or programs in the Windows Phone store.

Children's

Kids today are far from simple. They all know how to use various electronic devices, and often much better than their parents. Open access to a wide variety of information can cause irreparable harm to it, so Nokia, together with Microsoft, created a feature designed specifically to protect it from children. If parents intend to allow children to use the Lumia 820 (play games, make calls, calculate something on a calculator, etc.), then it will not be superfluous to protect the younger generation from applications and opportunities that are not intended for them. In the settings of the Children's room, parents choose the applications, music, videos, games allowed for children - and you can safely give the smartphone into the hands of the child. By the way, many games and applications often contain links that a child can safely open in a browser. But it is impossible to go to any other site by entering a web address in the Nursery.

However, in the process of testing "Children's" we encountered a problem: several songs from the collection and the Nokia Music application were selected for children's access. And in the end, you could easily listen to ALL songs from the player, despite the fact that access was open only to some.

To exit the Nursery, you need to press the power button, the password entry screen will appear (it is set in advance) and adults can return to their phone settings. The appearance of the Nursery can be personalized: choose the background (light or dark), the color of the elements, the lock screen photo, and even enter the child's name, which will be displayed on the Nursery's home screen. In our opinion, it would not be superfluous to be able to create several different Children's, if the parents have several children.

Taking screenshots

Another notable feature of Nokia's WP8 smartphones has been the ability to take screenshots without having to slyly "bypass" the system. Simultaneously pressing the physical lock button and touch start creates a png image, which is immediately saved in the "Screenshots" folder in the gallery.

Mobile office

The presence of a package of office programs from Microsoft distinguishes WP-smartphones from a number of other devices. The Office menu item calls up a list of created documents. You can create, edit, and view Word documents and Excel spreadsheets on your smartphone. You cannot create Power Point presentations, you can only view them. To create a document, you need to click on the plus sign at the bottom of the screen - you will be prompted to create an empty Word or Excel document or use ready-made templates: report, schedule, budget, etc. The smartphone offers to save the created documents either in its memory or in the Sky Drive cloud storage.

The Lumia 820 uses a new browser - Internet Explorer 10, which features increased performance, the introduction of hardware graphics acceleration, enhanced support for HTML5 and more. The browser is very fast: pages open correctly and without delay. As usual, in the browser, you can view open tabs and quickly jump to the one you need, add pages to your favorites, send the page via NFC, message, e-mail or social networks. Frequently viewed pages should be placed on the main screen as a separate tile. Provides a search on the page. By default, the Yandex search engine is installed in the browser of Russian WP8 Nokia Lumia smartphones, however, in the settings it can be changed to Bing or Google.

Navigation options

Nokia navigation services are getting better, more detailed and easier to use every day. Appendix "Nokia Maps" allows you to determine your location, find the necessary routes, track public transport routes and learn about the level of traffic on the roads. Once on the main page of the application, we can choose the display mode: map, satellite, public transport or traffic jams. Nokia Maps allows you to quickly find the most interesting places nearby and get directions to them, both on foot and by car or public transport.

The laid route, of course, is displayed on the map and it is described in detail where, where and when to turn. Frequently visited and interesting places can be saved in Favorites. In the application settings, you can enable or disable the zoom control, allow the use of your location and the display of places from Favorites on the map, etc. You can also choose the most suitable system of measures for the user: the usual metric, British or American.

Appendix Nokia Navigator (or Nokia Drive+ Beta) offers both car and foot navigation. It is enough to select the starting and ending points of the route and the navigator will take the user to the right place. The map can be viewed in both 2D and 3D mode. Here you can select the desired system of units and download a new voice in any of the proposed languages for voice navigation. In the options, you can choose the color of the map, turn on landmarks, speed limit warning, navigation voice, and more.

"Nokia Transport" - a special application for navigation on public transport or on foot. There are two items in the main application window - Navigator and Nearby Transport. The first one provides access to the navigator itself, the second one looks for available public transport in the vicinity of the user. After plotting the route, the travel time is displayed in the form of a graph, and both the pedestrian option and public transport are immediately indicated. Part of the route on transport is highlighted in color, and different types of transport are in different colors.

Appendix "Nokia City" will help the traveler to find the most interesting sights in a foreign city, places where you can eat, stay overnight, shop and have fun. This application has two modes: by selecting the heading we are interested in, you can view the search result in the form of a list, or you can point the screen in any direction on the ground and see pointers on it, "floating" above the found place. By tapping on an icon or name in the list, we will be taken to the Nokia Maps application, where we can get directions to the selected destination.

Impressions and conclusions

The smartphone turned out to be a very attractive and convenient model. This device has departed from the N9-like design, which is already quite boring. The dimensions of the smartphone are very comfortable to place it in one hand, you can freely reach any place on the screen. Of the pluses, we note the support for memory cards, which significantly expanded the space for storing information in a smartphone. The display is of excellent quality, where all the colors look just amazing, black turned out to be especially deep and saturated. It is displayed even better than in the new flagship - Nokia Lumia 920. The wireless charging function has not been tested by us yet, but we hope that such an opportunity will be provided to us in the near future. I was pleasantly surprised by the work of the Internet Explorer 10 browser: it is very fast and convenient. Not having to work with a dedicated PC program to transfer files to and from your smartphone is a huge plus for the new Lumias. The ability to transfer files via Bluetooth and NFC, loud speakers (conversational and external), support for LTE (4G), unique "Children's" and "Rooms" functions can also be called undoubted advantages of the Lumia 820.

Of the minuses, we note a very inconvenient process of removing the back cover. She, of course, is very tight and of high quality in her place, but to replace it, she had to work hard. In addition, the battery in Lumia 820 is almost not fixed in place and simply falls out when you open the lid. Considering that the cover is removed in most cases with a jerk, then the risk of the battery falling from a height onto a hard surface is very, very high. The Nokia 820 uses less durable plastic than the 920 and is likely to be more susceptible to minor scratches. It is also not very convenient that the smartphone is not defined as a USB flash drive when connected to a PC and you have to use Explorer to copy-move-delete files, and not, for example, a two-panel file manager.

However, in general it can be said that Nokia Lumia 820 is an excellent smartphone that combines an attractive and user-friendly design with all the features a modern user needs for both work and leisure.

Minuses:

  • inconvenient replacement of the back cover
  • Not very durable plastic case
  • no protective glass Gorilla Glass
  • using only Explorer to work with a PC
  • one volume level for alarm melody, alarms, music, games, etc.
  • not all files can be transferred via bluetooth
  • inability to upload files to the Internet through a browser
pros:
  • unique design
  • colored interchangeable back panels
  • excellent display with incredibly sharp images and deep, rich colors
  • wireless charging (using special back panels)
  • memory card support
  • Ability to work in LTE networks
  • convenient voice assistant
  • convenient and fast browser
  • support file transfer via bluetooth and NFC
  • connection to a PC without the use of special programs
  • unique "Nursery" and "Rooms" features
  • announced integration of Skype in the future
  • full integration with popular social networks
  • loud external and conversational speakers

Prices for Nokia Lumia 820

So far, it makes no sense to compare the performance of smartphones on Windows Phone 8. The fact is that all the models on the market, with only one exception (HTC 8S), work on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 (MSM8960) dual-core processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz. Including the flagship Lumia 920, and the hero of our review Lumia 820. And as long as the operating system has not managed to acquire a million layers of abstractions and frills, the device works extremely quickly. With memory, the situation is similar, the smartphone is equipped with a gigabyte of RAM, like almost all other models on WP8.

Flash from Lumia 820 is not very much, only 8 gigabytes, but there is a slot for microSD cards. Hot-swap, as I mentioned, is not provided: to get to the slot, you have to first remove the battery.

The smartphone supports NFC technology, everything you need is already on board. Unfortunately, the usefulness of this feature so far tends to zero: there are very few applications for working with tags in the Marketplace, and even those are clearly not intended for ordinary users.

LTE

There are already a lot of smartphones with LTE support, but almost all of them work with other frequency bands than those allocated for communication using this technology in Russia. Lumia 820 is a very rare exception. Theoretically, the device can connect to Megafon's 4G network, but in order to be able to talk on it, the operator must support CSFB technology - then when you call, the phone will switch to 2G / 3G mode. Alas, so far Megafon has not had time to set up the hardware on its side accordingly. But, apparently, there is not much time left to wait - in early January, the company will roll out an LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S III, and if it works, the Lumia 820 will also be able to.

Camera

The Lumia 820 has an 8-megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss optics with f/2.2 aperture. The pictures are not bad, at the level of other mid-range smartphones. Sample images below will help you get an idea of the quality.

). As a result, both devices are stuck in a kind of “limbo”: they are late for the holiday sales season, and in February at the MWC in Barcelona flagship smartphones of 2013 will already be presented, which will surely divert attention from the products of the Finnish former giant. Nevertheless, Lumia 820, in our opinion, deserves attention. That is why we prepared this review.

A close examination of the specifications of the Lumia 820 makes it clear that this device competes not so much with the HTC 8S as with the older model 8X, yielding only to the screen resolution (800x480 versus 1280x720). At the same time, on the side of the Lumia 820 is such an important detail as the presence of a slot for memory cards, which allows you to increase the total memory of the smartphone up to 72 GB (8 GB of internal memory + 64 GB on a micro-SDXC card).

Contents of delivery

Together with the Nokia Lumia 820 smartphone, the buyer will receive a charger, a USB cable and nice earplugs that match the body of the device in color.

Appearance and design

Nokia Lumia 820 looks quite nice from a distance, but if you are used to the impeccable build quality of the Apple iPhone or top Samsung models, then the Finnish sub-flagship will disappoint you: the plastic of the case most of all resembles cheap Chinese toys, and if you shake the device, you can hear how cheerfully dangles inside the battery. We got a red phone for our review, which, upon closer examination, seemed to us not very pretty: firstly, its red color has an unpleasant pinkish tint (the red version of the Lumia 920 looks much “richer”), and secondly, the plastic is very dirty and prone to scratches.

The lid of the device covers both the back and side faces; to remove it, you will have to sweat a lot - you feel a real Finnish school (at this point I remembered the 3250 XpressMusic phone, an attempt to open which at one time ended for me with a broken nail). On the back of the cover is an NFC antenna, under the cover is a battery, and under the battery, in turn, are slots for a SIM card and a memory card. The battery, as I already mentioned, does not sit tightly in its nest, and it plays both in vertical and horizontal planes, so one folded piece of paper will not help here, at least two will be needed. Such are the technologies of the XXI century.

The battery has a capacity of 1650 mAh (6.1 Wh), which can hardly be called a record figure at the moment.

If the touch buttons under the screen on the Lumia 820 are located in the same way as on other WP8 smartphones, then the location of the rest of the controls surprised me: the volume rocker, the lock button and the camera key are located on the same side of the device (right) . This solution seemed to me not very convenient, although, perhaps, I'm just not used to it?

I also cannot help but note that for its diagonal, the smartphone has completely horse-sized dimensions and weight: 124 x 69 x 10 mm, 160 grams. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S III with a 4.8-inch screen is 136 x 71 x 9 mm and weighs 133 grams.

Screen and sound

Based on indirect evidence, we can conclude that the Nokia Lumia 820 uses the same 4.3-inch Super AMOLED + screen as the once popular Samsung Galaxy S II. This matrix has a resolution of 800x480 pixels and a standard arrangement of subpixels (without PenTile). To Nokia's credit, this screen is perfectly calibrated in the Lumia 820, while in the Galaxy S II it showed everything with a noticeable blue-green tint, and the additional ClearBlack polarization layer partially solves the age-old problem of AMOLED - low maximum brightness and resulting from this poor readability in bright sunlight. In general, the screen can be called very decent, although in 2013 a smartphone worth more than $ 500, in my opinion, should already have HD resolution.

Separate attention deserves the ability of the screen to perceive not only fingers, but also inanimate objects (for example, the same fingers, but in gloves). In winter at -17 degrees, such functionality is perceived as a real salvation (on my Galaxy S III in such weather, I usually answer incoming calls with my nose).

If everything is in order with the screen as a whole, then, alas, you can’t say about the sound of this. In my opinion, the Lumia 820 sounds frankly bad both with the bundled headphones and with the Etymotic hf5 reinforcing plugs. However, the taste and color ...

Camera

The Lumia 820 has an 8-megapixel camera - alas, it has nothing to do with the excellent PureView camera in the Lumia 920. In a cloudy Kyiv winter, photos turn out frankly dull outdoors, indoors too. Particularly “pleasant” is the work of the white balance, which periodically gives out either a purple sky or something else. In general, a bleak camera.

You will find full-size pictures, as usual, in a separate gallery.

Software

As you know, smartphones on Windows Phone 8 are all alike, like two drops of water, but Nokia is trying to somehow stand out from the gray mass through additional programs and services. For example, Nokia Maps in Lumia 820 (unlike HTC 8X) can cache maps in the phone's memory and get directions. Another great addition is the Nokia Drive+ (Beta) program - a full-fledged turn-by-turn navigation, which simply has no analogues on WP8 (although it has recently become available to users of any WP8 smartphones).

Finally, Nokia has its own set of camera add-ons (so-called "lenses"). But all this wealth was clearly translated into Russian by the same people who have been amusing us for many years with instructions for cheap Chinese consumer goods.

(I hope it's clear now where the title of this review came from.)

Performance and autonomy

Nokia Lumia 820 is built on the same platform as the rest of the devices based on Windows Phone 8 - it's a dual-core system on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip coupled with 1 GB of RAM. Since the system itself is quite "light", the phone just flies. At least I never had to deal with slowdowns. The only negative is the long application launch time compared to iOS and Android.

The Lumia 820 uses a removable 1650 mAh battery, which is quite capable of powering the phone for a day and a half. In general, the typical autonomy of a modern smartphone.

In the dry matter

Despite all my grumbling, Nokia Lumia 820 is a good smartphone, which, in my opinion, looks more interesting than the same HTC 8X (if only because of the support for memory cards). In fact, the choice between these two devices comes down to the choice between a better screen and the ability to expand the phone's memory. Do not forget that you can work with gloves on the Lumia 820 screen, which is especially important in the winter season.

The general weakness of the Windows Phone platform and the late time to market play against the Lumia 820. In addition, I am sure that the overall level of performance of this smartphone (case materials, assembly, camera quality) ... how to put it mildly? .. does not quite correspond to its price category.

3 reasons to buy Nokia Lumia 820:

  • good performance;
  • slot for memory cards;
  • the ability to work with the screen with gloves.

3 reasons not to buy Nokia Lumia 820:

  • Windows Phone is significantly inferior to iOS and Android;
  • poor body materials and assembly;
  • mediocre camera.

In use for about 10 months, it fully met the expectations both in terms of hardware and in terms of support from the manufacturer. Hardware: - Beautiful screen, still impressive every time you unlock it. In the dark, paired with the OS interface, it looks simply cosmic. - The case (black matte) showed itself quite well, the phone fell countless times due to the specifics of operation, does not look "killed." - The buttons are located in their places and there is no degradation for almost the year is not observed, everything is clear. - The voice and external speaker withstood all the comparisons that it was subjected to in one way or another during this time, at the level. - I have no problems with audibility - High maintainability. The protective glass changes separately from the screen, and therefore the broken glass (sometimes) cost me $ 50 with work,

Well, everything is obvious here: 1. Design. He's on top. It differs from the faceless remnants of many other manufacturers. 2. WP8 system. Everything is extremely smart and logical. It has its flaws, but overall it's just great. 3. Screen. AMOLED display + Cleat Black do the trick. In the sun, the screen is readable, in the help it's generally beautiful. I constantly want to unlock the phone and climb in it. 4. Sound. Loud built-in speakers. Complete earphones very much pleased. The quality is top notch. If someone suddenly does not know, then here is the control: 1 click - pause, 2 clicks - rewind to the next track, 3 clicks - the previous track. 5. Camera. For its price range, the quality is excellent. Both video and photo, especially if you adjust the white balance. 6. Holds a charge for a long time (a day confidently). 7. Price. At the time of writing

1.Good assembly. 2. It is convenient to hold in your hand, 4.3 inches is a comfortable size. And by the way, every 4.3 has a camera, although it is VGA, but it is enough. 3. Individuality. 4. A good responsive screen, you can even work with gloves or any improvised object (pen, keys, shoes) and the resolution of 800x480 is enough. 5.LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.1, NFC, Wi-Fi Direct Maps, Navigation, Radio Mix and so on. 9. SkyDrive is a cool topic, it needs to be developed. 10. Headphones in the color of the case, although I have black, but yellow and red ... it's cool in general, not every manufacturer approaches the image so thoroughly.

    1. It catches the net well. 2. 3G / LTE do not fly out as it was on the Radar. 3. Good camera and flash (if there is a manual white balance), video in full hd 30fps. 4. Good speakers and sound in good headphones. 5. Amoled display (very pleasing to the eye) and thick glass (fell glass down on the tile and not a single scratch). 6. Removable battery + memory card slot. 7. Off-line navigation and accurate positioning (very helpful abroad). 8. Many different covers and cases. 9. Many proprietary applications from Nokia.

The ability to change panels, colors, screen, speed of work (for a couple of weeks it was not even possible to "freeze" it, although it is used very quickly and mercilessly) Wireless charging, took it for a try - and bought it. The quality of the sound in the player. There is no such meaty bass as with the poweramp and android, but the sound is much cleaner and more pleasant. Nokia Music! This is a balm for the soul...

Compared to 920,925,1020, there is a slot for a memory card, the dimensions are more compact, and the camera is not much inferior! I would buy Nokia Lumia 820, I like it more than 920,925 or 1020!

I must say right away - the phone is a bomb and I can recommend it to friends. When I chose a phone in the Yandex market using "advanced search parameters" - no matter how I refined myself - in all the lists of phones selected by Yandex, I invariably found this Nokia! It has everything you need and even more. - The radio is there and it works, although it is not indicated in the reviews! - Internet over 3G works almost always whenever needed. Perhaps this is normal, and I just used to come across "bully" android devices that had the Internet falling off after several hours of inactivity. But everything is great here! - Nokia Navigator with a license for the whole world! - DOES NOT BRAKES anything and nowhere! - A pleasant interface, in the description of which the main word will be the word "smoothness" - a very nice animation of the program menu, and the location

Unstable reception in 3G mode, it seems that when 3G is turned on, the phone prevents it from working on its own. It was in 3G mode that I saw a couple of random reboots, a few marvelous inexplicable glitches and a couple of times I received an SMS with the text "you called". There is no such thing in 2G.
Also, 3G hits too hard on a small battery. You may not live to see the evening, which is practically impossible without 3G (only if you don’t torture it in your hands).
Therefore, I recommend going to 2G and switching to 3G only when necessary. (this is all possible problems of my copy)
    - The front camera is rather weak, although this is obvious from the characteristics.
    - Almost 100% of problems with autonomy are caused by incorrect software or incorrectly installed software, and at the moment there are no tools in the OS to quickly calculate it. Account for def

    1) Sound problem
    2) Screen problem. Defects in the oleophobic coating occur quite often (it's like an indelible strip on a black background - you wipe it off with a special napkin, it reappears a little later), it can be seen when watching a video as some kind of influx
    3) Bluetooth - did not allow to connect with my Samsung, cut off the connection, it just didn’t even reach the attempts to transfer
    4) ADATA memory cards, for example, 10 class 32gb, are not seen by the phone (it turns out that it only sees cards from specific manufacturers) - this card was seen by any devices on bad and android ...
    5) Maybe I'm crooked, but before I didn't have such problems with technology (I calmly dealt with setting up any phones, computers and hd players, including firmware updates), but here I spent 5 hours trying to synchronize

    1. There was a jamb with duplication of songs in the playlist. That is, I throw 1 track into the phone, and I get 4 identical tracks in the list. Treatment - edit tags. I did through the player on the computer AIMP3. Selected the entire folder with music - right-click - AIMP3 - edit tags. In the program itself, we do not touch anything at all. The tags may or may not be changed. Just select all the files in the window and click save. All. There will be no duplicates.
    2. Lack of navigation buttons in a standard browser. Namely, the keys forward. Treatment - we put another browser.
    3. There is no possibility to play music by folders.
    4. General volume.
There are no other major cons for me.

Disadvantages, this is a separate story. After Android, everything is different here and for many it will seem like a big disadvantage. But it should be so, because this is a new Axis.
    1. I lacked only one application, this is 2GIS, because the City is a complete non-offline hat that you can not install on your phone.
    2. One end speaker, I would like a couple.
    3. A synchronized list of contacts, at first I was horrified, but then I figured it out, it seems to be normal.
    4. There is a problem with social networks, if you closed the application or put a lock on the screen, then you become offline and when unlocked, Contact or ICQ reconnect to the network. Correspondence is very inconvenient to conduct.
    4. There is no indicator of missed calls (in general, the light bulbs do not signal missed calls)
    5.One level loud

    1. Battery - with 3G and GPS barely enough for a day. 2. The camera module is heavily scratched, the black cover after 2 weeks of wearing in a pocket along the edges of the matte place became glossy. 3. A lot of dust gets into the gaps between the screen and the cover. 4. The front camera is no good. 5. The headphones in the kit are bad (there are no bottoms at all, and the ears cut the top).

Here, it’s more likely not even shortcomings, but rather problems that can be solved if you wait a little or bother. The Windows system has simplified a lot for users by hiding many settings so as not to dig with crooked hands. It's all wide open for Android!)) Maybe this is for the best. ==
    - I turned it off once - the "back" button stopped responding. I had to take out the battery.
    - There are no in-depth settings where you could see the status of GLONASS / GPS, turn them on / off with separate widgets, as well as Wi-fi, Bluetooth. But it seems like you can also download and install separately.
    - It is completely incomprehensible how the NFC module works. He does not read metro tickets, as I understand it, due to the peculiarities of WindowsPhone. But I tried to transfer objects (contacts, pictures) to another t
