Inflorescences can be collected after their full disclosure, berries - from mid-September. And in order for the fruits to be preserved in one piece, they should be cut along with the stalk.

But the viburnum, which is harvested after the first frost, is considered the most useful - the berries contain a maximum of useful elements and practically no bitterness.

The harvested crop can be frozen and dried. In the first case, they just need to be packaged in bags and sent to the freezer. In the second - spread out in an even layer in a dry and ventilated room for at least 10-12 days. Then it remains to dry them at a temperature of +50 degrees, spread the dry berries in linen bags.

Kalina is an effective folk remedy. Moreover, not only the berries of the plant are useful, but also the bark, leaves, inflorescences. However, it should be taken carefully for treatment purposes, not forgetting about contraindications.

My acquaintance with viburnum began in a very funny way: with sweet pies ... On that day, all our numerous relatives gathered at my grandmother's. Women fussed in the kitchen, wanting to quickly and tasty treat the whole family. And the grandmother kneaded a quick dough and asked her assistants to make a filling for sweet pies from red currants frozen for the winter. Bags with currants were not signed, the berries were "recognized" by color and shape. They crushed them, added granulated sugar and starch, everything was thoroughly mixed. They made envelope pies and sent them to fry in the oven. The aroma was delicious! When the pastry was ready, everyone went to the kitchen.

The very first bitten piece raised the question: “Why do you have pies with bones?”. We were very surprised: the filling turned out to be a mixture of red currant and viburnum berries. Unexpectedly tasty, except for the inconvenience with the bones.

Bright red, as if red-hot fruits gave the name to this Kalina shrub.

Pharmacist-herbalist Sorokina Vera Vladimirovna

Traditional medicine praises viburnum. It is considered an elixir of vitality and health. The healing possibilities of the shrub are almost limitless. However, let us turn into skeptics. Consider the beneficial properties and contraindications of red viburnum as a combination of qualities of a single whole. It's no secret that what helps one person can cause irreparable harm to another.

A shrub with bright red fruits is useful in its entirety. From the crown itself to the roots lying in the depths of the earth. Medicines are prepared from flowers, leaves, branches, young bark, fruits, seeds and rhizomes of viburnum.

In various parts of the plant are concentrated:

  • carotene and ascorbic acid, which stimulates the immune system;
  • vitamin K, involved in the formation of platelets;
  • higher fatty acids responsible for metabolism;
  • tannins and phytoncides with antimicrobial action;
  • pectins that bind and neutralize toxins;
  • phytosterols, which reduce the concentration of bad cholesterol and reduce the risk of atherosclerosis.

The healing properties of the plant are not rumors or arguments. They are confirmed experimentally.

Back in Soviet times, experiments were conducted in the laboratory of the Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (formerly VILR, and now VILAR) with the participation of preparations based on viburnum.

And here's what they showed:

  • decoction and infusion of the bark of the plant stimulate the formation of platelets, and reduce blood loss from various kinds of injuries and internal bleeding;
  • the ability to stop blood loss was also found in preparations made from flowers and foliage;
  • a decoction of the bark tones the muscles of the uterus, facilitates the course of painful menstruation;
  • pomace from the fruit stimulates the formation and outflow of urine, restores electrolyte balance, dilates blood vessels, increases heart contractions, lowers blood pressure;
  • infusion of flowers and foliage inhibits the vital activity of staphylococci and other pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microflora that causes skin diseases; lotions successfully extinguish the symptoms of furunculosis, eczema, ulcers, diathesis, hemorrhoids, ringworm and keratosis;
  • the bark and flowers of the shrub are suitable for the prevention of seizures;
  • an infusion of the bark can be used to suppress the symptoms of an irritable stomach; tannins bind and compact proteins on the surface of the mucosa, form a protective film that inhibits the inflammatory reaction;
  • shrub berries have a sedative effect, calm the nervous system, stimulate the immune system to fight colds, relax smooth muscles, reduce the severity of pain;
  • with prolonged use, the fruits reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood, promote the elimination of toxins, restore cardiac function;
  • all parts of the plant are used to treat foot and mouth disease in farm animals.

In folk medicine, viburnum is considered an effective external remedy. From different parts of the shrub, infusions are prepared for gargling, washing wounds, whitening the skin, removing age spots, blackheads and other rashes.

Kalina is widely used to treat internal diseases and conditions. It is considered a good anthelmintic, diaphoretic, choleretic, laxative and antitussive. Medicinal properties of viburnum:

Kalina red from pressure

The berries of red viburnum or common viburnum are good for the heart. The fruits contained a mixture of seven plant hydrocarbons - iridoids, which was initially taken as a single complex substance - viburnin.

The bitter taste of berries is the “merit” of those same iridoids. But this small drawback pales in comparison to the benefits that viburnin can bring.

The mixture of hydrocarbons energizes the heart. It improves the conductivity of electrical impulses. The force of contractions increases, the vessels dilate, and the pressure decreases.

Phytosterols are also involved in setting up cardiac activity, which do not allow excess cholesterol to be deposited on the walls of blood vessels. The use of an infusion of the bark has a clear anti-atherosclerotic effect. It is prescribed as an antihypertensive (lowering blood pressure) agent for hypertension.

The plant is rich in plant precursors of sex hormones. It facilitates the course of menopause. Kalina acts on two fronts at once: it eliminates the emotional component, calms the nerves and improves sleep, and also smoothes out the main physical symptoms.

Children are treated with decoctions of bark and berries, as well as infusions of flowers. Medicinal pomace is used as external and internal means.

Plant characteristic

Viburnum can grow as a tree, but is more common as a shrub. The plant is a long-liver - it grows and develops up to 50 years, and under favorable conditions and protection from pests even longer. The height of viburnum sometimes reaches five meters. Broad foliage and noble appearance make the plant an enviable decoration of garden plots and park areas.

Where does it grow

Common viburnum can be found on the banks of a river or near a lake, in wetlands, as the plant loves well-moistened soil. It grows in shade-rich forests of deciduous trees, located on its edges and outskirts. The plant prefers tropical and temperate climates. In the regions of the European part of Russia, it grows in the middle lane, and in the South of the country it grows everywhere.

Botanical description

The red viburnum shrub reaches a height of 2.5 to 4 m. Gray, with a brownish tinge of bark, covers the woody parts of the shoots. On it you can see longitudinal cracks, the damage of which by pests causes damage to adult viburnum bushes.

  • Run away. They are round in shape and yellow-brown in color. Some parts of the plant may be grayish white. Inside the hexagonal core is white with a red tint. At the tips of the fruit shoots there are two false buds, between which you can see the continuation of the shoot. Barren shoots end with a single terminal bud.
  • Leaves. Quite large: length and width vary from 5 cm to 8 cm. They are broadly ovoid or rounded. Complex - divided into three or five lobes. The upper part is naked, the surface is wrinkled, the color is dark green. The lower part of the leaf has a gray-green color due to dense pubescence. The edges are often serrated. The placement of leaves on the branches of the plant is opposite, the attachment is petiolate. The petiole has furrows, and reaches a length of 2 cm.
  • flowers. They have a light, white-green color. Each inflorescence is an umbrella-shaped panicle 8 cm in diameter and about 5 cm long, located on the tops of green shoots. The edge of the inflorescence consists of barren flowers, which stand out from the rest in larger sizes. The middle of the inflorescence is formed from small heteromorphic flowers. The active phase of flowering of the plant falls at the end of May - beginning of June.
  • Fruit. Drupes, spherical in shape, forming voluminous clusters. Painted bright red. Inside is a large bone up to 9 mm long. The pulp of the fruit, with sufficient juiciness, is distinguished by astringent bitterness. The intensity of taste decreases after exposure to sub-zero temperatures. The fruits fully ripen in October.

With special pruning, a tree can be grown from a red viburnum bush, however, its crown will not be too dense.

Procurement of medicinal raw materials

The medicinal raw materials of viburnum red include bark, as well as fruits. Their preparation takes place according to different rules described in the table.

Table - Features of harvesting viburnum red

Bark Fruit

- Harvesting begins in March or early April - Active harvesting - in September, October, after the first frosts - The bark is removed from the cut branches in layers - The clusters are cut from the plant, the stalks are not removed - Large layers are crushed;
– lay out in a thin layer under the sun for drying – Dry the bunches under the sun, hanging them on a thick thread or wire – Dry using a dryer or in a warm attic – Dry using a dryer or in a warm attic – Temperature when using a dryer 50-60 ° C – The temperature when using the dryer is 60-80°С – A well-dried raw material breaks down – The firmness of the berries indicates complete drying

After drying, any raw material of viburnum is stored in cotton bags in a dark, dry place, with good ventilation. The bark retains its beneficial properties for four years, the rest of the plant - throughout the year.

Freeze

Also, fresh viburnum fruits can be frozen. To do this, they must be washed under running water, dried on a paper towel. Spread in a thin layer on a wide bowl. After two hours of freezing, pour viburnum into a container or bag.

Compound

The healing properties of red viburnum are due to the content of biologically active substances in the plant. Moreover, any type of raw material can bring benefits, since valuable compounds are found in all parts of the shrub.

Features of therapeutic effects

Treatment with viburnum berries and other parts of the plant requires knowledge about the features of its effect on the body.

  • Stops bleeding. Viburnum has a pronounced hemostatic effect, which is based on the ability of viburnum chemicals to inactivate fibrinolysin. This suggests that the plant prevents the resorption of already formed blood clots, which is very appropriate in the postoperative period, but should be of concern if the patient is prone to thrombosis.
  • Improves the functioning of the stomach. The ability of viburnum bark to eliminate the symptoms of gastritis is based on the formation of a protective film on the mucous membrane of the organ. It is formed due to the precipitation of protein molecules of gastric mucus by tannins. This slows down the absorption of drugs and reduces their therapeutic effect, which should be remembered by people undergoing drug treatment. The anti-inflammatory effect of viburnum is based on the ability of the plant to strengthen and tighten cell membranes. At the same time, the fruits of the plant are stimulants for the secretion of gastric juice, which can harm people with high acidity.
